Beast but slightly off with decisions.. our best player imo in terms of general play

Played very well. Needed to link up with Lukaku more, but their chemistry will improve the more they play together.

Didn't think he was very good. Made some very dumb decisions in my opinion. Hope it's just getting used to this new formation.

Powerful and energetic play but let down by questionable decision making. I'll forgive him for the pass at the end though, think he really wanted to let Lukaku get on the score-sheet.

Mourinho maybe had a little dig when he was praising Lukaku.

Very good today. He needs to lift his head up before shooting

Made some great runs and his dribbling was consistently great. Really took advantage of the space (Lukaku did a very good job in creating this space for him). In terms of his accuracy it could be a bit better but he still scored. I would like to see more link up play between him and Lukaku though. Overall a good performance.

I must have missed that, what did he say?

He said he played better than those who scored, held the ball up well, wasn't selfish, etc. Clearly a dig at Martial which is a bit ridiculous for a pre-season game tbh

Some of the posters should be working for Sun.

I think Martial is under pressure and it shows on the pitch. That may be part of the reason his decision-making is off. He seems selfish, but it's partly insecurity because he knows he isn't guaranteed a starting spot. He thinks if he scores he will earn that spot. But in reality, he needs to develop better vision and become more of a team player.

Tough challenge for Mou to teach him that.

Doesnt seem very confident and tries to do too much because he is not sure of first team place.

He is extremely talented naturally and has some special attributes that can't be coached but he needs to calm down. I'm sure he will become a top top player in the end, I just hope it's with us.

Clearly? Clear to whom? I thought he'd have to defend his big £££ signing striker who failed to score. But some just twist everything Jose says into anti Martial blurb.

Just watched the video on ESPN. How was just praising Lukaku. That wasn't a dig at anyone.

Happy to hear he played well and was aggressive. That's what his game lacked last season, aggression.

That's clearly a dig at Martial (btw Mkhitaryan, Fellaini, Rashford also scored but it's only Martial), at least that's what Redcafe experts said.

Move along people, nothing else than some trying to prove Jose doesn't like Martial.

Thing I'm most pleased about is he seems a happy man again and looks like he has sorted his off field issues out. His fitness seemed good regarding tracking back and attacking but hard to tell coz it was only LA Galaxy. Anyway looked liveley and like the Martial we want to see.

This.

Even a few words from Mou that are clearly meant to probject Lukaku are twisted into this agenda like dig toward his own players.

I criticised Mou about his handling of Martial last season as much as the next guy but him saying something doesn't always mean he's throwing cheap shots at his own players.

You could tell his comments were meant to protect Lukaku who didn't score with the guy having huge expectations on his shoulders.

I thought there were quite a few times he could've passed it to Lukaku and put him through, but instead he decided to have a go from outside the box. If he can just get his decision making, especially in conjunction with Lukaku, right then we would be fierce up top.

Somewhat selfish but aggressive on the ball and trying to score from every ball which is good for a striker. Good game from him and he looks in a good form physically. He didn't develop a good link with Lukaku, though.

I'd rather have him be a bit selfish but at the same time aggressive than the lethargic Martial we at times saw last season. His decision making has generally been good for us, so I'm not concerned about that. It's very good to see him aggressive again as it is a sign of confidence and desire.

Regarding Mourinho's statement, I'm reading it as simply wanting to defend Lukaku because he knows he has a 75 million pound price tag on him and there are doubts and high expectations regarding him.

Has jose ever praised martial, I mean ever. I mean he shouldn't be too critical of him every time. Yes he was selfish but I like players waiting to take their chances , let him take his as he is a forward. We need goals from all our attackers and not just lukaku.

Again not saying martial was perfect yesterday or jose is wrong to criticize players for being over selfish but he has to some time praise martial, especially when he scores a goal and provides an assist.

I think it's Tony's inconsistency that frustrates jose. I'm not sure he 100% trusts him which is a big part of his management of players

Thought he was fantastic today. Granted, his decision making could have been a bit bitter, when he got the ball, he always looked threatening.

Think two up top will really suit him if Jose decides to go with that.

So it's becoming a thing now. Basically repeat something enough until it becomes the truth. Jose didn't criticize anyone but was rather protecting Lukaku. If one want to see Jose's comments as criticism than it should be applied to Rashford, Fellaini and Miki as they all have scored along with Martial.

For once let's just see things for what they are, not some twisted or underhanded agenda driven like comment by the manager.

Or Lukaku simply did what was asked from him, using his physicality to hold up the ball and draw defenders away from Martial AMD Mikhi. Jose said similar statements about Pogba last season and we don't know what instructions he gave him on the pitch. A manager sees the player playing well if he's following the instructions.

The statement has nothing to do with Martial , though. He did a good job and was aggressive enough as a striker but he needs to cooperate more with his teammates because in a competitive game with defenders surrounding him being selfish can hurt the team. You can be aggressive and cooperating at the same time, no contradiction.

Wow I didn't notice the discussion was all about Jose's quote.

Apparently some here loves making drama out of nothing. I don't it hard that the players are thinking that way.

Our fans have high imagination and conspiracy theories experts.

Your part about Lukaku doesn't contradict my post at all. There's no doubt that Mourinho was actually satisfied with him but at the same time also felt the need to defend him to due his price tag and the expectations associated with it, something he also did with Pogba last season.

Again, I didn't say Martial should simply be aggressive but I'm glad to see him aggressive and commit a mistake here and there for now instead of somebody who doesn't even try things. It's a good start to a development that has to continue. At the same time, I'm not concerned that his decision making will come along, as he's shown an ability to do that in the past.

Praised him several times towards the end of last season.
Arsenal, Spurs and City off the top of my head.
Those were games we were very defensive.

Can't remember to be frank. I really think martial needs to be encouraged from time to time. Not saying jose won't be doing that in private but sometimes praising him in public could do him world of good.

I don't think we disagree then, so fair points.

The World Cup is next year and I know he really wants be in the French squad and all that and he knows he needs a very good season to get the call up. I expect him to be all fired up and more aggressive in his play in general so lacking motivation or being uninterested is hardly gonna be a genuine excuse if he fails to live up to expectations this season. Lack of ability as a reason won't fly too because he has proven in a full season(having performances not far off world class for a wide player) and in flashes numerous times how good he is.

If he fails this season(though I hope not), it's most likely gonna be due to the systems/tactics not suiting his game or him not getting enough chances or game time (likely possibility if Perisic comes in and Mourinho likely believes Perisic might be better for Lukaku) and in this scenario he would most likely consider an exit at the end of the season and it will be right thing to do however how sad.
