I dunno maybe just me then. Thought he was doing really well every time he got on the ball
Nah I'm with you I thought he was pretty good today. Would have been better if Mkhitaryan didn't have blinkers to the left side for the three occasions there was an easy pass when we had an overload and Martial had his defender isolated.
Martial tho showed more of his creative side today and that little dunked, spin pass to Mata was sublime. The un for his missed opportunity, I'm guessing he tried to open his left so it went to the far left corner but that was a difficult finish if that was what he was going for.

I still wish he would get himself in more threatening positions. Miki and Mata often seem ahead of him and at times he was even back filling in at LB letting Blind go forward.

He did ok, had 2 or 3 good runs and a couple of nice passes that nearly resulted in goals, he'll be back on the bench on Sunday.

Could have had a few through balls his way if Mkhi hadn't decided to run in to a wall.

Didn't claim his place in the starting eleven tonight, which is disappointing. The battle between Rashford and Martial is exciting to watch though, and overall he has done pretty well so far this season.

I'm hoping they both start on the wings with miki in the middle against everton tbh. Mata has done alright but it gives us more pace and goals.

That was a positive display IMO. Was a constant threat when he had the ball and could have done much more if Mkhitaryan was a bit quicker with his decision making.

His link-up play was excellent even against a very compact defense in the first half.

I really thought he had a good game. He covered his position well, threatened with the ball, made a couple of very good passes, was a bit unlucky with the chance he made himself. A good performance and really he was better than Rashford in that game.

His movement still lets him down, but I actually thought he had a good game overall.

Thought he should have stayed on.

Not at his best but was still a threat imo. I think Jose's got it spot on by having him and Rashford share that position, both are very good options.

Hard to believe that he is getting praise, I thought he was shocking tonight. He just wants the ball at his feet to cut inside and others nothing off the ball

I think Mata adds some control in our attack recycling the ball, even if it isn't neccessarily creative passing, which is opposite to Rashford and Martials directness. If we take him out i fear we will lose creativity and balance.

Could be wrong though.

I think he has to get himself involved in the game a bit more, it feels like Rashford is more willing to take the game by the scruff of the neck when he starts.

I definitely agree, ans maybe Everton isnt the right game to do that in especially with no pogba. Do want to see it tried soon though as martial and rashford are both playing well enough to be starting imo.

Dreadful performance tonight. Showed no threat at at all. His movement off the ball is appalling. Complete contrast with his running with it, which is first rate.

His movement is a problem but there are signs he's working on it. Tonight for example, he made a great near post run when it was crossed from the right. He didn't finish the chance, but that isn't a run he's made a lot before.

I'm betting on you being wrong though

Mata has not contributed to one of our 16 goals scored this season, no matter how you slice and dice it dude has been redundant in our matches..

Our midfielders are there to recycle possession whilst he fails at his main job

Rashford and martial need to start whilst lingard can come in and "run at tired defendes"

Real spectrum of opinions here for someone who was barely seen all night, and did nothing to impress the few times they were.

Wasnt dreadful. But I think it served a purpose. (much like when Rashford starts and Martial comes on to take his place).
I like the way Jose is doing this as you can see one benefiting from the other when they come on as a sub.

I thought he was good but most of our play was down the right side especially first half.

Honestly think he's the sort of player (currently) who benefits from coming off the bench. Besides the obvious point of him being a fast player with fresh legs up against tiring ones, his reading of the game, and understanding of which runs to make and when, seem to be spot on when he's introduced later on. You could see this really clearly against West Ham and Swansea last month but I think this stretches back further, although this is mainly due to him barely starting games last season. Starting from the offset, he struggles to impose himself and appears to make the most generic runs and movements which are easily read by even the most average left backs.

I think Martial's great and a supreme talent but for now I'd definitely be opting to start Rashford ahead of him when possible.

He did OK today, nothing special, but certainly didn't play badly. Thought he suffered occasionally from not being released often enough; there were a couple of times when he was in acres of space on the counter and didn't receive the ball. He looks reasonably sharp but he'll have better days.

Don't know who he was, but the co-commentator on BIEN sports (I think a former United player), should be absolutely ashamed of himself in the way he talked about Marital. Made it sound like he'd had the worst game of his career. Almost smacked of an agenda

Came in here to mention the same thing about Mkhi going the opposite way everytime. Every counter when Martial was free he didn't once look left and instead either tried to find Mata or dribble through everyone.

Martial is slowly getting back into his stride I feel and although nothing special today you can slowly see the confidence coming back into his game which is nice to see.

He's so good with the ball, needs to improve his movement off the ball a bit.

He plays like he wants to show he belongs when he comes on as a sub but when he starts, he doesn't play with the same level of intensity. He didn't do enough to hold down a starting spot.

Think he played well when the ball came to him.
Imo he still needs to go and get the ball more. I think rashford does this better although I think martial is better on the ball.
Kinda surprising. Like he doesn't have the confidence to go influence the game will only do it when ball comes his way

That's exactly why Rashford is the better option atm. Martial really wasn't that good tonight, most praise for him after that performance is just a bit forced. I want him to succeed but the difference in movement between the pair is clear to see imo.

Always flatters to deceive. This was the game in which he needed to impress Jose. Instead he was our least effective attacker. He always shows flashes of brilliance but is way too inconsistent. He needs to demand the ball more and make better runs. At the moment, Rashford is clearly contributing more to the team than Martial.

Should do better when starts if he wants feature more often in the first XI.

I thought Martial and Miki were bang average today. At times when we like players, we tend to overlook their faults and I can see that in many comments about Martial's performance against Basel. The reality is that he was nowhere near exceptiomal. In the top games or tourneys, what you need is for your star attacking players to turn up with their A games not just be merely 'good' or 'okay'. They have to really show up, dictate play and score or assist decisively.

Having said this, I am one of those convinced that Martial has it in him to become a world class attacker. He just needs to improve his off the ball movement and decision making.

For now, in that intriguing Martial vs Rashford battle, my vote goes to Rashford.

Mata was pretty non-exitent and you say martial was the least effective attacker?

Whenever he got the ball in space, he was dangerous and he forced the corner that we scored with. My only issue with him is his movement but on the ball he was more effective than mata and Micky who lost possession countless times and didn't release the ball early enough especially to martial..

You can see how much talent he has when he has the ball at his feet, the way he runs with the ball is something very few people in world football can do. He also has a good pass on him for a quick 1-2.

His off the ball movement however, is shocking. He just runs straight and cuts inside , watch Rashford play 10 minutes and you can already see him pulling defenders out of position and running into channels non stop, something that Martial just doesn't do.

I really hope Martial can sort out his movement, that's probably the only but the biggest factor that makes him so inconsistent game by game.

He struggled to get into the game, was ok in the second half and should have scored.

I think he had an OK game. Few times he got the opportunity to run at people he was very dangerous. Few times he was in good position but Mkhitaryan ignored him and choose to run into the defenders. He is one of our biggest talents and it's obvious, we must find a way to nurture this talent.

Thought he was poor. Very rarely looks to get in behind and always comes short. When running at his man needs to mix it up and try and go inside as opposed to coming inside, too predictable.

He needs to learn how to make himself available when the defender is closing him down all the time, and that he needs to run into space. He waits or falls behind the fullback too often to get the ball! Make runs ffs!
