On the whole "long range shooting" thing. Martial's never really shown to be a good shooter from range. He's good at doing the finesse shot thing, but I think I've seen him have a proper shot from range where he put his foot through it and he came close like once hit the near post after coming in from the left, think it was last season). Long range shooting was never a strength of his, but it doesn't matter it's a very low percentage shot anyway. He's always been about getting those high percentage finishes and placing the ball in the corner. Goals like the one vs Stoke and Everton are essentially the same sort of finish as if he was closer in, he just side foots them in and he's incredibly effective at it. I don't think he's ever really shown proper long range strikes like what Rashford can do (though he's been getting pretty unlucky), or Pogba, or Lingard recently. Could develop it of course, but I think he'll always be one who will look to pass/dribble his way into the box and getting a better chance before shooting from range. Nothing wrong with that.

Go and watch the goal. It is a pass into the corner. It doesn't constitute a long range effort, and Martial proved in his first season he could finish similar chances. That goal is not proof his long range shooting has improved.

:lol::lol:

Are you saying that because he side footed a ball into the top corner it doesn’t constitute as long range effort? Messi must not know how to take long shots then.

Maybe you should go watch the Watford goal again because it wasn't even in the top corner and it wasn't long range at all.

Mate, you need to reign it in a little. You’re becoming a parody of yourself.

Spot on!

Martial is always that kind of player that hits the ball with his side of the foot. He rarely use his lace, so powershot from distance is something he is lacking.

The description is in the "name" itself. "Long range" goals. Not "must be top corner 300mph lace-it-first-time-it" goals . As simple as that.

Ah my bad, I just assumed you were talking about his last goal against Stoke. That goal does show his long range shooting quite well.

Saw this on Reddit. His goals against Stoke. Same spot. 3 seasons in a row.

How is the Watford goal long range though?

Why are people getting sensitive because I am saying the watford goal is not a long range effort? Some of you need to chill out and open your eyes.

Yeah, it was a great goal.

Just remembered how people in this thread used to argue that Martial being good off the bench meant he shouldn't be starting games and it made me laugh out loud :)

My favourite player to watch, and with Sánchez arriving, along with Lukaku, he’ll finally be part of a front 3 where he isn’t double marked so it’s only going to get better IMO, can see him getting 20 goals this year.

Crying at the “Martial can’t shoot from long range” debate being back.

Can’t say I’ve ever really put much stock in long range shooting, wouldn’t say Messi really takes many long range efforts and Ronaldo sky’s so many surely there are players in better positions he can work a move with. It’s not a skill I value that highly and everyone can shoot from range, to think Martial can’t is stupidity on another level.

Haram wasn't saying Martial can't shoot from range. Was saying Martial has always been able to shoot from range to prove a point that he hadnt improved as a player since he got here...which quite frankly is ridiculous.

I can’t see Harams posts, I was talking about when this was brought up a few months ago. I just noticed people talking about it again which brought back flash backs to the level of stupidity that was thrown around then.

This guy is playing to about 20% of his potential and yet he's good enough that he should always be in the team. Once he clicks he'll be really special. As it is he's a very good player who's scored some absolute beauties lately. Just give him a 10 year contract and sit back and watch

No, I was arguing that his shooting hadn’t clearly improved since his debut season. I wanted to debate about his improvements and that’s what the guy chose to say Martial had improved. People then chose to get offended.

You have about 250 posts in this thread. Can you sum up your opinion on this player in one post? Is it completely negative?

No, I have always said he is a talented player. People just choose to ignore it. People are looking to be offended.

I’ve defended players like Mata, Lingard, Fellaini, Lindelof. I have said before that sometimes I am not totally convinced by Bailly, same for Luke Shaw. I am not afraid to have debates on players and actually analyse them and their performances. Some people are just sensitive.

Do people think players improve by managers just telling them everything is great? I praise Martial as well so I dont get what people’s problem is.

Fair enough. But genuinely how to you rate Martial in the overall scheme of things? 250 posts suggest you have a definite opinion. Sum it up

I don’t have a definite opinion, that’s my point. My opinion will evolve as he does as a player. I can just say things I have said before. He is talented, needs to work on his attacking work rate, his movement, his runs, is probably best playing just off a striker etc. His dribbling and ball control is excellent.

How many people have to criticise your posts before you begin to introspectively question that perhaps everyone else isn't hyper-sensitive, perhaps you're just impossible to engage with? You think anyone wants to engage you when you state things like "I'll continue to prove you wrong...", "you can't handle my solid argument..."? That's without mentioning the ridiculousness of your argument, that Martial's 'long range efforts' don't count as long range because they're of similar style to his finessed finishes in the box, or that they don't count because they're only a yard outside the box. Senseless.

I cant believe this . If people want to argue the goal against Watford is a long range effort then fine, let them blatantly lie to themselves. The debate was on if Martial had CLEARLY improved his long range shooting since his debut season.

If he had said it was arguable Martial had improved his long range shooting, it's a different story. CLEARLY is a strong word to use. Despite all this, it's not really his game so I don't really care if he improves his long range shooting that much or not. I was just disputing the fact he had CLEARLY improved his long range shooting.

And yes, I will point out when people dance around points I make just because they have no real response. Or, when they have no real response and just hide behind the word 'agenda', or imply that there is one.

As long as he puts the ball in the net, does the method even matter much ? I know he prefers to use a certain curve to his shots for attempting to score and he may not be as good as lacing them. I personally wouldn't give a feck if he toe pocked it everytime as long as it worked.
He can score from long range just as he can from inside the box, if he curls it everytime wtf does it matter ?

It doesn't matter at all.

Have a feeling Sanchez will cause him to bring more intensity into his game.

This I hope also much the same effect Tevez had on Rooney and Ronaldo. It what Spurs and Liverpool and City are all doing well nowadays. I see Cities forwards drop this intensity of late maybe down to a little fatigue or players like Bernardo Silva coming in and not either being used to it or not as adapt as the players like Sane and Sterling at doing it.

Without getting dragged into a debate I'd have to say his shooting looks a bit better. The strikes against Watford, Stoke and Everton were superb. The Stoke one was an absolutely beautiful hit.

Is shooting is without doubt, better.
There are aspects of his game he's clearly improved and there's evidence to prove this.
His off the ball movement, his crossing, decision making (shown by his understanding with Pogba and Lukaku), shooting and his understanding of when to drift from his positions on the left and come inside.
It's why he's still contributing while not playing particularly well. His last very good game was probably early December.
I can't take anyone suggesting he hasn't progressed seriously.

Having a long range specialist on our team would certainly change your mind but these guys (Pogba perhaps and KDB) are our closest versions around I guess. But I remember Le tiss Southampton, Albertz at Rangers, McLeod at Celtic and a right few in the Italian league could change the game in an instant. Great having a player or two capable of this instead of Matic Herrera and Rojo hitting row Z on 9/10 shots!

Reading your posts, it does seem like it matters to you.

I was saying his long range shooting is not clearly better, that’s all. I dont care if he improves it or not because it’s not really his game.

Sanchez coming is going to help him and Pogba definitely. They are not going to be double marked because of the extra threat a busy forward like Sanchez carries. And that will help them to elevate their game. Really looking forward to the Sanchez deal being completed as soon as possible.

Well said.

I remember Martial lacing 1 off the bar earlier this year I think it was, even in the last game he had a decent hard strike that went just high and wide. He's definitely got better at that, so has Rashford.

I agree that long range shooting isn't as valuable as some believe. Goals from long make up a very small percentage of any teams goals and it's something more important to have as a midfielder anyway.

He's scored 3 times from outside the box in the last few games. That's pretty good for a guy with poor long range shooting.

We haven't had one for a while, to my memory. Rooney went downhill with his, Depay never had it, so I guess Nani was the last one I remember
