Great thing about players with the quality of Martial is they can hurt the opposition at any moment. Direct contributions to 15 goals this season, some in games where he has not played that well, is testament to this.

Which is why if all our wide players and 10's are off form(see last season and parts of this) including Martial he's the one who should still play.

This has been a difficult point to get across. Give Martial a good run of games and he'll contribute well to goals and assists. His talent is too big for that not to happen, even if he's not playing all that great.

Happy birthday Anthony Martial.

Here’s to many more with United

I think much has been said about Martial.. has all the physical attributes, and is a great talent. Application and consistency are his 'Achilles heel' as it were (poor use of analogy, but I have a headache...). Martial should simplify his game.. he isn't a Ronaldhino/Messi/Ronaldo, and doesn't have their natural skill, one-on-one ability.. not many players do by the way. It's using your talents effectively that make the best players. Martial doesn't need to try beat a man all the time.

I want to see him go outside his marker, on his left, and begin using his left-foot far, far, far more. He must. And he should be far, far better in the air! He has everything, power, pace, leap... !

A great talent to have, and I sooooo want him to develop more.. if he could just keep his game simple, effective and be an absolute danger to opposition (look at the likes of Mane, Sterling etc in their presence on the game.. they always seem dangerous. Martial doesn't quite have this as yet, and I really want him to just go up another gear.

He has the talent to hit 20 Premiership goals, and if he did that, we would go pretty close to winning the thing.

My concern is whether he is playing for a Coach who knows how to improve the attacking instincts of a forward. I don't think this is Mourinho's best qualities.

Disagree with a lot of that really. His strength is in his dribbling, and his performances this season with his goals and assists have proved that. He is not a hug the touchline winger and never will be, he’s a wide forward and he’s developing into a world class one. Sure, he could maybe go on the outside occasionally, but it’s not his natural game and I don’t think he really needs to either.

What the breakdown individually
Last year:
Martial 8 goals 8 assists
Rashford 11 goals 7 assists
Lingard 5 goals 4 assists

This year:
Martial 8 goals 7 assists
Rashford 7 goals 7 assists
Lingard 6 goals 4 assists

Always good to have decent debate. I disagree that Martial's strength is his dribbling.. this is a concern, as it seems that he is being 'pushed' into this bracket.. the top 'dribbler'. I don't even know what that actually means... the Martial who arrived on the scene, scored diving headers, scrappy goals, great goals after a run... goals with decent finishes ( Watford last week...).. my point is he could have it all! But a dribbler? This is one of his faults, he tends to slow a game down, to keep the ball under his feet at times... against Arsenal, he was more free, more fluid.. him, Lukaku, Lindgard.. Pogba... they were just awesome, power, pace, technique... but they didn't destroy Arsenal through great dribbling.

Martial can travel with the ball well, of course... but look at those who I have compared him to in terms of dribbling... Messi, Ronaldo, Ronaldhino.. these are amazing players, who can run, and drift, or simply bemuse a defender, and go past him, and they do this with pure instinct and style. Martial is NOT this type of player, and I don't think that is the Martial we want or need. We want Martial the goal-scorer, and goal-maker. He has decent technical qualities, but consider him and say, Pogba: who is the better dribbler? Who can beat a man more effectively? Pogba is a special talent, and he can do this.. Martial isn't that type of player. It doesn't mean he is a bad player, just not that type of player and I worry about him complicating his game.

I never mentioned anything about hugging touchlines or wing-play. Suggesting that he doesn't need to be able to go outside a marker, in addition to his ability (and at this stage, far too obvious option) to cut inside is strange... If Anthony Martial develops a decent left foot (remember Ronaldo did exactly this at Man Utd) this would enhance his game incredibly.

Or only De Gea and Pogba are rated higher.
So only 2 players out of the entire squad warrant over 7 out of 10 in a season where we've coasted the Champions League, repeatedly scored 4 or more and are in contention to win the league for the first time since Fergie retired. No Matic, Valencia, Young, Martial...I'll say it again - tough crowd.

Yeah, Redcafe rating is equivalent of GdS ratings, 6.5 means he is having very good season.

Martial is good at dribbling but it’s all quite laboured with him and still more often than not loses the ball when he tries to take a full-back on, so he’s not even in the same league as Messi/Ronaldo (younger), Ronaldihno/Neymar with that, they made it look effortless even when they were young/raw developing players like Martial is now.

He won’t even get to Hazard’s level in terms of dribbling, but Henry is a good comparison, which is a good enough for me if he can get to that level someday.

Comparisons with Henry is not off . I can see him as a true CF in the long run.

He's proved recently he's so much better being allowed to roam rather than just stuck out wide. He's actually really effective going through the middle, his link up play is really good and his quick turns/touches really suit that style of play.

When he's out wide he's left alone and rarely do we link up well with the AMC or forwards, they all head into the box ready for a cross.

the 3-5-2 suits him so much more as he can pretty much use the space of a winger, but also come inside and have a partner to work with.

I think from now we need to get a left winger and keep Rashford/Martial/Lukaku as our strikers.

Yeah, nothing screams 'very good' quite like a 6.5.

Maybe you should check how GdS rate players. It's more or less how average rating in CAF.

Also not sure why people worry too much about rating, it should always be compared with other players. So CAF rates Martial as third best player in the team which isn't too bad.

To be fair I pay very little attention to the averages on here - just happened to wander into this thread expecting a glut of praise for one of our biggest talents. Then saw the 6.7. Was intrigued to learn that the Caf applies the same ratings system as an Italian newspaper though.

Nah, it's just that we have a bunch of reactionary cnuts on here, for whom nothing less than absolute perfection is due and when it doesn't happen they hugely mark a player down... Look at Lingard's average rating. He's not great or anything, but can you honestly say he's let anyone down when played? He's the quintessential 6 or 7/10 every week squad player that Fergie's Utd teams were built upon back in the day, yet from reading the caf until this current green patch he has it, he's barely Championship level.

If anyone is abscribing some sort of system to the ratings on here, then they are sorely mistaken... It's what happens when a bunch of spoilt twats converge en masse to a forum during a time of heightened emotions straight after a game. Nothing more, and nothing less.

Sorted now. The data for goalscorers is scraped automatically during the game. Assists have to be edited in afterwards so I've given Martial his for the Arsenal game and Pogba two.

Thanks man, now I understand the delay and please keep on doing the good work :)

Well Ronaldo has always been good since his breakthrough but if you look closer to his history, you'll find out Jose was the first one elevating him to 50-goals-per-season level. It's quite impressive if you know Ronaldo's first season at La Liga was not going so well that he ended up scoring just 33 goals, far away from Messi's tally (47 goals). But everything rapidly changed in the season 2010-11 when Ronaldo matched Messi with 53 goals, then 60 goals for the first time of his career one year after.

Ronaldo used to be a clueless dribbler who didnt know when to save stamina for his meaningless duels, then he successfuly became a mighty scoring machine under Jose's reign. So i think Martial's future is in safe hands

If he plays well on Sunday we'll win.
He seems to bring out a faster all round game from Lukaku. Rom tries to give and go so he can play Martial through rather than trying to hold onto it so Mata / Mkhi can catch up.

I think there's another name you're forgetting in the middle there!

I don't there is anything other than praise for Martial in this thread (except couple of posters). Not everyone use the rating system in the same way, same for any player.

Why are you using some of the best players of all time as a benchmark for dribbling? Not being as good as them doesn't make a difference to him still being very good at it.

Just came back into this thread and seen talks about Martial not being very good at dribbling

Martial is one of the best dribbler in the league and it's certainly one of his strength. Saying that he loses the ball too much while at the same time using Neymar as an example as to what a good dribbler should be sound very ironic because not too long ago Neymar was the most dispossessed player in Europe elite competitions.

People who attempt to dribble a lot lose possession at lot more than other players, it's natural. Players like Messi, Hazard, Neymar, Ribery etc would have a worse turn over possession than other players because of the way they play. Expecting a player who does dribble a lot to not lose possession is silly.

Reading that Martial isn't good at dribbling and it not being a strength of his is one of the most bizarre thing I've read on the Caf.

And Martial doesn't slow the game down. Where are some people seeing this, sounds very random.

Crazy right? It's one of his biggest strengths!
