Worst thing is, I don't think he will start vs Liverpool. Jose will start Lingard because he runs round a lot.
Jose knows the value of a 1v1 specialist who can score. He'll also know Martial has given Clyne problems before. In a game where we'll be looking to isolate our forwards 1v1 Jose will have to include the team's best player in that department. And having got his season up and running today, his confidence will be on the up etc
Lingard may play, but not at the expense of Martial.

Martial is a special talent and worth persisting with even if he isn't in top form. Hoping he starts regularly now.

The finish was brilliant, and reminded me so much of one of his goals last season. His confidence should be better for the liverpool fixture now.

From the first minute he looked up for it. Ran with real determination and speed today. Almost back to his old form.

Very good goal and I think he really needed that goal. Hopefully it kicks him back into some good form and I think the little break he got will do him good

He's wonderful when on form, generally looks world class at times when he turns it on.

Thankfully he's young and he can only grow so his inconsistencies will be less.

Delighted for him. He really needed that goal.

Should definitely start vs Liverpool.

Would like to see him as a striker for us again. Ibra should really be having to look over his shoulder a little more than he is right now.

The kid is quality, should be ahead of Lingard on the team sheet every time.

Great goal.

True that, was bizarre.. surely the guy who has got the goal and has got momentum on his side, you'd play it to him and get him on the ball as much as possible.

It's because someone came on who only ever looks to the right.

Good goal, and nice dribbling when Stoke made a foul on him. That's about it, he barely touched a ball besides that, which isn't necessarily his fault. Good substitution overall, and should definitely start next game

So happy for him, he's had a bit of time out so he should be feeling refreshed and confident now.

Perfect time for him to come into some form.

What about the moment on the byline when he played it to whoever that should have scored but shot on a stoke body?

Oh yeah also true. Indeed overall a decent performance for the amount of time he was on the pitch. If he starts against Liverpool, and plays like this I see us to easily win the game

I hope next game he starts, with Rashford right, Ibra up top and Mata through the middle. Looks like Anthony is hitting some form again - shame there's this international break though.

His finish and dribbling are his strengths. Why can't we play him a center forward?
I honestly think he looked most promising as a striker. When Ibra leaves I want to see some sort of 4-4-2 with him and Rashford up top.

Of course we could, but who would play as LW? With the players we have, it makes sense to have him on the front left.

Part of me thinks it wouldn't matter who plays LW if he can demolish people as a CF. Surely we can find someone to "do a job" on the left. The thought of Mata feeding him balls upfront excites me a lot. Unfortunately don't think Mourinho would be a big fan of that.

My impression of him at the moment is that he's more capable of the spectacular than the regular, and that's no shame given how young he is. However, he's not yet learned how to move as a striker so while his hold up play is good, I don't think he's ready to lead the line for us just yet.

He's unquestionably more talented with the ball than any other youngsters of ours, so I hope we hone that aspect of his game further instead of trying to mould him into a speed merchant on the left.

I think you are putting a bit too much hope in him. Right now, Zlatan is a better and more complete forward (although they could form a duo), but Martial's time will come. If he gets into form he will be a formidable partner to both Zlatan and Rashford.

I reckon he's about to join a number of our attacking players in good form. Mata's playing well, Rashford's playing well, Herrera's playing well, Pogba's playing well (not £90m well yet, but still a different league to what we were able to field in midfield under Van Gaal). Ironically the main missing ingredient at the moment is Ibra putting his chances into the net, which isn't an issue you'd have bet on before the season started.

There's a fair amount of negativity around the caf at the moment but personally I'm feeling more optimistic than I have for two or three seasons. On paper our squad is full of quality, and on the pitch it's starting to come together. Feels like only a matter of time before we start putting together strings of good wins. Stoke could so easily have been a thrashing.

I seem to be disagreeing with you a lot this week. Which is unusual. IMO Zlatan is one of few players who performed at an acceptable level against Stoke. People seem to be using that one missed chance as a reason to slate him. Every striker misses chances and that was a really exceptional save. It was the only really clear-cut chance he got in that game, against l hapless opposition. Which is why I disagree with your enthusiasm about the performances of the other players you mention.

We're painfully slow in transition, consistently give the opposition time to get a good defensive shape, seem reluctant/unable to beat a man and generally a long way short of playing fluent, effective attacking football. Despite creating some good chances against Stoke. The best of which was created by Zlatan himself!

What I do agree on is that Martial's last two cameos have been encouraging. He looks like he might be about to hit some form and the goal will be a confidence boost. Which is great because we're badly in need of his best form from last season.

3 strikers automatically makes for an unbalanced team unless 2 of them are also capable of being playmakers... like Messi/Neymar at Barca and Bale/Benzema at Madrid. Right now, only Ibra can help buildup out of Ibra/Rashford/Martial. Lingard is just useless so he's not an option either.

For Man Utd to find balance, Mkhitaryan is very important. I think it's a shame that Mourinho isn't using him because he's fantastic and has proven it. You can't play him 1 game and then sit him down because he wasn't able to perform. He's a rhythm player. Mkhitaryan needs to get games to find his rhythm.

Anyhow, imo Martial is miles better than Rashford on the wing. He just has much more game to him to play that position. Rashford is a better pure 9... but he's not playing the 9 position.

I honestly don't quite understand what Mourinho is doing. I didn't understand it his last season at Madrid and I also don't get what he wanted to do at Chelsea last year. It seems to me that unless his plan A works... Mourinho struggles to adapt. Well i hope he's learned because he needs to have more than one plan here.

Hes been injured has he not?

Also its a bit early to be judging Mourinho. Seems to me he is still trying to find his best team which isn't usual this early at a new club.
