Rostov 1:1 Man Utd
Imo we looked a lot worse after Martial came on for Mkhi. I'd say he was invisible but on the other hand he noticeably broke down our attack every time he got the ball.

Worst player on the pitch the whole time he was on. It was like he didn't care one bit.

I don't think we can read much into anything on a crappy pitch like that. Didn't have much time to adjust to crappy bounces etc.

Yep he was terrible. As soon as he got on the ball he looked terrified an angry Rostov player was about to go through the back of him.

Played like he'd never seen a ball before. Hard to be too critical given the awful conditions.

Wasnt the game to bring him on tbh. He's never getting his dribble going on that pitch.

Rashford was the change to make. Raw pace for the long punts down the channels. He would've given them something to worry about.

He was absolutely hopeless.

One of the worst little cameos I can remember seeing from a Utd player. Must have been difficult to adjust to those conditions.

Needs to step it up. He'll have to as Zlatan will be out.

Agreed Bubz.

It was painful watching him as he was actually trying harder than he does but nothing was going on for him.

What happened in the very last moment? Was falling asleep, but I think it was Fellaini who knocked it down to him and it just went through his legs? There wasn't a replay shown on my stream

Skinny actually makes for the best stamina. That's why Marathon runners and 10k athletes are always low muscle, skinny athletes.

That make sense for the long game. How do you explain his excellent burst of acceleration for the entire game? You need a lot of muscles to pull that off.

So what are these best time, and the best pitch, the best formation, and also the best opponent for Martial to shine?

What's your point? Have I mentioned any of the other factors?

Yeah agree. Thought the game suited Rashford and conversely was the worst possible environment for Martial. Strange sub. Maybe has Chelsea in mind.

He's responsible for playing bad. The excuse of 'not the best time to bring him in' is a moot point, when he messed up some basic stuff..

Do t think we can judge any of the players performances based on the condition of the pitch. Got a good result under the circumstances a I think everyone just needs to completely forget about this game.

Since he secured his place in the team he's been well below par. He was better when people thought Mourinho was bullying him for no reason.

Knew he would struggle when he came on, that game wasn't right for him. But he has been poor lately, needs to kick on badly

Think Mourinho wants him to work harder and believes his form will come naturally.
A view I agree with.

Second season syndrome, it's fine. Rashford and Martial will improve next year.

Worried about next few games with Martial, Pogba and Rashford all in very poor form and no Ibra.

I didn't absolve him of blame. I just said it wasn't the right game to bring him in, meaning it wasn't a game suiting his strengths.

Messing up a 5 yard pass is on him. But regardless, he wasn't going to come on and win the game for us today.

It looked like he only came on to replace Mkhi rather than to bring him on (if that makes sense). It wasnt great but not really a game to talk about his overall contribution to us. Seemed like it was to get him minutes though. And if he could do something bonus.

You're correct but he has trusted him a lot more in recent weeks, since Mourinho has done that Martials levels have dropped quite significantly.

I think Jose got it right.
Based on how he's seen how that team plays on that surface it was always going to be a kick & run game all night long!

So go big and strong from back to front with at least one up front with pace. Martial wasn't stellar but he chased & did as he was asked. It was always going to be tough to dribble on that surface; Georgie B. would have had no problems of course, but I don't think Rashford would have done any better than his young french team mate today.

I wouldn't say his levels has dropped significantly.
He was very good in his first two games back in the team and had a positive last 20 minutes against Southampton. Also had a good first half against Bournemouth.
I just think Mourinho is looking at different areas of his game we might not notice. And his improvement in those areas is why he's playing a lot more.

The Rostov game wasn't one he was going to show his quality - it was a completely broke up game with the pitch, constant fouling and the ball just being hoofed around, mostly out of touch. The thing about when we play Martial I simply don't understand is why we don't actively have a plan to work situations where he gets to run at defenders and do what he does best. Something along the lines of what we used to do with Valencia when he was a winger and in some part still do for him when he is fullback. He constantly ends up in one on one situations but, for some reason we seldom seem to do that for our best one on one attacking player.

While we continue to play Martial as a left forward, we are not going to see the best of him till we get him the ball more and in positions he can make best use of his abilities.

Did he miss a sitter right at the end last night? I didn't get any replays so can't be sure but thought Fellaini knocked it across for him to tap in... except the net didn't buldge.

Looks to be struggling again. Tough season for Tony. Really hope he can turn things around next year.

Those first two ones I count as him getting the place, as in they're the ones before when I'm counting which meant he became an important player. After that he has been very below par. Some very good moments in both games you mention, but just moments, not good halfs, just spells of a few good runs.

any news on his injury?

"Martial was injured for the Chelsea match," confirmed Mourinho. "He couldn't be selected for the Chelsea match and, if you are injured for the Monday night game, you're injured for the Tuesday morning training session. And if you are injured for the Tuesday morning training session, it's not because of today that you can be able to play on Thursday. So he's out of my mind. I don't think about him, we have the same players we had in the last match plus Ibrahimovic returning for the Europa League.

His choice of words are interesting - I'm reading it as if Martial declared himself injured, especially in comparison of what he said about Rooney, in which he confirmed a kick in the knee. I hope I'm overthinking it.

I wouldn't be particularly devastated if he left in the summer.

Whats the deal with some posters wanting rid of very talented young players like Martial, Pogba, Luke Shaw? We'll be stuck in 6th for the next 10 years if we let these guys go FFS.

Get the impression Jose has issues with him, hope he can work it out.

Hopefully the injury is nothing serious, in any case was not called up to the France squad.
