I'm baffled at the comparisons to Memphis. What the feck is wrong with some of you?

I could be wrong, but I think both he and Mata have to do a bit more defending in Mourinho's system.

LVG would bring it wide and have the wide players stay up front and attack, whereas Mourinho gives more freedom to the fullbacks and midfielders to get forward which means that the wingers have to drop back in more withdrawn positions and defend at times. Rooney is an extra player up front for Mourinho as well, so that means more defensive responsibilities for the rest.

Last season, he had matches where he played as a number 9, whereas this year he looks like he'll be a winger coming in off the left all year. So he won't get the same chances he did as a number 9.

But he showed that he is going to be dangerous, and the more fluid system might actually help him. I think he can get 15 goals this season coming in from the wing which is plenty.

I think he was 1 goal every 3 appearances last season. This season if he is 1 in every 4, then that would be a good return for a wide player in my opinion, but I'm still hoping for about 15 goals once he settles into Mourinho's system.

Showed glimpses he's getting there last night! Will be such an important player for us this season.

I think he's still our most important player. When he plays well, we create chances. He was still not at his best in the 2nd half but he caused havoc. His running caused the Saints defence to lose shape completely.

This is one element of our forum which I hate. Many turn on our players if they under perform for a couple of games. New Kagawa and signings being flops before they even kick a ball.

Nothing wrong with him at all, yes he should have scored but he didn't, so what? Now he has the chance to develop into a proper player without all the attention on him.

Euro 16 didn't seem to bring out the best in him and there does seem to be a lag in his game since. I also think Martial is in the shade with all the new signings but thats not a bad thing. Personally I would rotate him with Rashford, the both of them are powerful game changers. i also think Jaun, Miki and Martial would make a dynamic trio behind Ibra.

Was quiet to begin with but thought he was excellent in the second half.

His second half showed that he's still the same player, by all rights he should have had a goal (his own slight reluctance to shoot early) and an assist (Ibra misreading that through ball) out of that twenty-minute spell.

Just needs to get back to 100% fitness, and the confidence will come from there.

Watch this. Even the first half wasn't actually bad, just unremarkable. And then the second half was excellent.

He seems to be the one taking a bit longer than the other to get back to full fitness/match sharpness but he showed glimpses yesterday, especially in the second half of what hes capable of.

Is he one of the few players who are faster with the ball than without? He can look a little slow and uninterested chasing a ball but explodes with it.
Yep, he seemed to do less off the ball work than Mata, and looked lazy at times. Definitely more motivated in attack with the ball.

Looking sharper by the minute. 2nd half he played very well indeed I thought.

He's still a very young and raw talent and this might be getting forgotten after such a blistering start last year. There's also been a few external to united issues that might have distracted him (France@Euros, relationship shit etc)

15+ goals this season I reckon

Had memphis played like Martial did in the second half yesterday people would have praised him. People's expectations are ridiculous. The kid is 20. He had a good second half where he burnt a few defenders and linked up very well on the left with Shaw. And he played a part in the work done on the left which Shaw won a penalty from. But nah, if he basnt scored or assisted or looked as sharp as he can, he was crap.

Had two good chances and messed up. Seemed to be off the pace ,but showed in glimpses what he's capable of.

had he scored his 2 chances people would be over the moon. he was good yesterday and made some excelent runs and created chances.

just a bit unlucky with his finish but jesus christ some people on here...

I was a little worried after the first half but he made up for it in the second half. He still lacks a bit of sharpness but that will improve. He'll be back in form in no time I think.

I think he's fine, we're in a different set-up now where he's expected to do much more defensive work, noticed that sometimes he was always in our own half, i think he's struggling with sharpness/getting into rythm, trying to find the right balance between playing his game + helping out with defending, and secondly, he's also adjusting to having to share the workload now (which is good for him). His performances have always picked up in the second half in the last 2 games so far, which bodes well.

Playing Mata on the right is restricting Martials game. We know he likes to cut inside but he couldn't the first half as we had Mata coming central, Pogba coming forward from CM then Rooney and Ibra lurking outside the box, it just cluttered up the space he likes to run into.

He flourished last season as we Mata quite wide hugging the touchline, CMs that stayed deep and Rashford running behind the defenders to stretch them, allowing Martial more space central to run into.

Once the team has played a few more games he'll be back at his best, Jose is still probably figuring how to get the best out of all his players in his system.

A couple more games and getting the sharpness back and I think he'll be back on it.

Saying he has been poor doesn't mean we've "turned on him". If anything it should show the level of quality we expect from a player of his caliber.

Been saying all Euros that Deschamps is going to ruin his confidence and he has. It's going to take a few games since he's back to his best. Definitely needs a goal.

Think he is sometimes a bit timid in the system but easy to forget he was our only real attacking threat last season at times and had to constantly run at defences to try make something happen, often giving the ball away, to then produce the moment of magic. He doesn't need to do that as much now with Ibra up there and likes of Pogba etc.

He will be fine with a run of games and once he scores, he should of scored last night but it was a great burst of pace to get away from the defender.

Had an average game but he seemed to be more intent on getting involved and moved a lot better than in his last 2 games. Don´t think it will take him very long to get back to his very best.

Lol...The new felliani. CAF always needs a dog to kick. He's one for you....the a bit more rusty than others after a period of sitting on a bench in France this summer.

Least bit worried about him, just a bad patch of form. Even when he's of the boil you can see the quality. It will click for him sooner than later.

What? Maybe this could be applicable to perhaps 1% of posts.

People giving him stick are incredible.
Most of us would have quit watching football last season of not for him.

Don't see the big problem. Still breezed passed players for fun and got into good positions. Just isn't quite coming off. One goal or assist and we'll be raving again.

You people are actually fcked lol...

He's easily one of our best players, he's what, not even 21 yet? and he showed he was starting to get back into his groove in the second half..

He won't stand out AS much now we have Pogba, Zlatan, Mkhi etc but he is an incredible talent.

Anyway all this hoo-haa about Pogba, Ibra etc and I completely forgot about Martial... very exciting times ahead.

I'm not worried at all about him. He came alive in spurts last night and will soon be back to his very best. Always a threat on the ball regardless.

Looking can't find it. Back up your claim.

Liar...you've not looked lol. Like I said, read the comments that others have made about 'negative comments'....asked them to back up their comments too?

He did fine last night. Give him time to get going, he's just getting back to his best after a tough time with the Euros and his personal life issues.

Could ask them as well but now I asked you. I take it you have nothing to back up your claim with then. I was just curious, but carry on then.
