His awareness of space and technique is so good, we must make sure he signs a new long term contract

Yeah. Tbf Foden also looks fantastic.
Foden is the more aggressive player at the moment. Gomes a lot more patient. The criticism I had of Gomes at the beginning of last season was that Gomes was too passive when his talent could give his team a little more of a push. Gomes has the better technique, as hard as it is given the great technique the other kids have, but he doesn't take full advantage of it right now because he's not as aggressive. He takes advantage of it when being pressed, and when linking up with others in tight spaces. This could also be a symptom of him not being more energetic to find space to receive the ball more.

On the other hand, if you want to keep possession there's nobody else who would do a better job as others risk losing it more often in instances where it's not needed. Thought yesterday's match was a perfect example of that.

I slowed it down before I made this, and it doesn't look like the defender gets a piece of it.

If you click on the image, you get to see the gif... just the way video embeds on imgur work on here. Not great - somewhere like streamable or gfycat is better imo. Nice bit of skill. Would love him to maybe get a few minutes in the FA Cup if we have a good draw.

Actually, with Rashford's injury and no Pogba, Pereira or Fellaini, he would have been handy to have on the bench for Swansea as our options are limited.

His latest like on twitter isn't very encouraging.

edit: can't post tweets so it's :"@agomes_47 hey man please go play first team asap like sancho. Dont wait around. I hope English culture can understand a player like you"

He seems way too impatient. He only turned 17 a month ago.

It's highly unusual for 17 year olds to be playing first team football for bigger clubs. Kylian Mbappé, Christian Pulisic and Kai Havertz are the only outfield players I can think of that played aged 17 recently.

The difference between him and Sancho/Nelson are that the latter have the physicality to compete with senior players already.

I think the signs have been ominous since he didn't sign the new contract when it was offered. I can't really fault Sancho for leaving City as there is no way Pep would have played him when he is signing guys like Bernardo Silva to sit on the bench. It is similar for Gomes with Mourinho, is he really the manager to give Gomes a regular spot of the match day 16?

I think we need to agree some sort deal like City did with Sancho where we get a buy back by agreeing a deal rather than going to tribunal.

Maybe he just likes this the fact that his mate Sancho has moved on. Just a maybe?

I've said this before but I believe the proliferation of football is to blame here. Twenty years ago unless you were part of the local youth football scene then you wouldn't have heard much, if at all of the academy players. Let alone seen them play.

The fact is we see youtube videos of academy players as young as 12. Teenagers who still attend school get talked up on forums and gather a following on social media. Every goal or nice piece of play is cut and shared around. These kids are put in the spotlight very young and many of them enjoy it. I don't blame them because they're still teenagers and there's that element of loving attention that normal teenagers have, let alone talented academy footballers in PL academies.

This thread was created in 2014 when he was 14. He's probably read fans in these years commenting how brilliant he is and he's going to make it big etc. This whole 'build them up' thing is going to come to a head because of the closed bubble youth football is vs the harsh reality of senior football.

Where are you getting that from? One tweet he liked?

I've never heard anything about him demanding to move up the grades or play first team football. He's not making the England u17s at the moment. I seriously doubt if he thinks he should be playing for the first team

Damn. I thought he had left City for good. People seem to think he's a future world beater.

Gomes is class but nowhere near ready for men's football. People just need to calm down and see how he develops over the next couple of years

This isnt much a problem at Ajax for example and this effect is 10 times as big as it at United, it is much easier to see highlights of all age groups and search those players up.

It is only rumoured but they didn't go to tribunal on it so I think it is likely.

Don't think there is any buy back clause, at least it wasn't reported when he was sold. Dortmund at max would have paid few more millions in tribunal fee, agreeing buy back clause means Dortmund gets nothing in this deal.

Edit: Also for tribunal fee set by FIFA or someone else than FA, the fee is usually small. Apparently City would have got around 200K.

Too soon to tell, he is very talented, but there is a big difference between youth football and one at the top level.

Also, the player has to agree to come back, otherwise the buy back is useless. The fact that City have Sane who is young himself and looking like a top class player, may turn Sancho off joining them again. He left City to get playing time, doubt he would go back unless he has clear opportunity to be a regular starter.

Came to see some class videos, actually got suggestions he could be leaving. feck yas

No pressure there.
Of course he won't be as good as Messi but he wouldn't be a bad replacement if he fulfils his potential. He'd be a great fit at Barca or Real.

If you read his Twitter he posts of lots videos of the mighty midgets of the Spanish league like Iniesta, Messi and Isco. Spain seems like a good fit for him.
Yeah his technical style would be a perfect fit for either team, I think both will be in for him to sign a pre contract come January.

I've read interviews of him saying that his aim is to succeed in the U18s and U23s team this season to be a regular first teamer at United by the time he's 23. That seems sensible and would contradict what is happening now. It's hard to know if he is currently acting this way to try and bluff his way to a better contract or if he really plans to leave for a lower level club where he believes he'll get more game time.
Though I can understand some young players leaving to drop down a level for more senior level appearances it should be pointed out the Sancho hasn't started yet (don't think he's even come on as a sub?) at Dortmund.
Angel should wait at least 2 more years before worrying about a clear path to the first team, he's only 17 ffs.

Quite reminiscent of the Pogba situation in a way, great young talent of whom we all and the club know he is a great talent. But the talent seems a bit impatient and might look for other options. If he does well then people criticise United for ''letting him go, how could they be so stupid'' whilst this isnt really the case.

Don't see any similarities with Pogba myself. Pogba we poached from Le Havre aged 16 and was already an amazing prospect, he didn't really owe us anything. Gomes has been with United since he was 6 and should have a lot of loyalty towards us. Pogba was a physical monster and clearly ready for the first team and Ferguson picked Rafael and Park over him in centre midfield, Gomes is a huge talent but physically is still a boy and would get bullied in competitive adult games.

Pogba made the right decision in leaving us but I think Gomes would be silly to even consider it at this stage.

I think that's a little naive tbh. Every player should have the right to do what is best for themselves and it would be wrong to suggest that a player should sacrifice their prospects for the sake of "loyalty" or repaying a perceived debt to an institution. Bobby Duncan at City along with other talents like Solanke (who had been with Chelsea since he was 7) are and need to be unsentimental in their choices because becoming a professional footballer now is hugely competitive where the slightest wrong decision can cost years in terms of development.

That being said I think Angel is fine for 2 more years at United and then should perhaps think again if he isn't getting a substantial amount of first team football. The important thing for him is to not get jealous should he see Sancho doing well at Dortmund towards the end of this season or start of next and I know that can be difficult for young players, the moment you see a colleague playing first team whilst you're on the bench or in the reserves. He shouldn't lose sight of the fact that Football career planning is a long game and instant exposure to mens football might not be a good thing for him yet no matter how talented he is.

Gomes's problem is not about first team football lol, it's about he didn't even train with the U23s, still with the 18s full time.
