Angel Gomes - Will he stay or will he go? | Contract Expired 30th June and he's left the club

The press rarely have a clue about youth players.

I suspect Gomes has received numberous contracts elsewhere - this is pretty much Dortmunds MO.

Offer young talent decent contracts to move on a free, train them up and sell them for a profit. I wouldn't be shocked to see that happen.

We will see anyway, not sure moving to another english club will be good for him and Germany is in vogue right now.

Especially if Bellingham goes and Sancho is already there (who he is/was close with)

Pretty sure Dortmund wanted him last time a couple of years back. I wouldn't be shocked to see him go there, even if they have more competition now. But Götze is moving on, so he could replace him. Gomes will have plenty of clubs to choose from, from the PL, to Spain and Germany, i have no doubt.

He captained the England under 17 team that won the world cup a few years ago and was seen as the biggest prospect in the squad, which included Sancho and Foden. 3 years later Sancho is now seen as one of the top wingers in the world, and Foden is getting regular game time at City, yet Gomes is still sat in our reserves with 2 PL bench appearances to his name behind Bruno, Mata, Lingard and Pereira in the pecking order.

There's more to it than meets the eye I think. 3 years, 2 managers, neither of whom gave him much of a chance if any. Maybe he's just not kicked on from his early promise? Let's not act like he's looked great in the few chances he's had.

Genuine q: are there any top level talents his size right now in world football?

I think the issue for us is that the style we're building is based on pace and directness. So even with very obvious flaws, a Lingard or Chong might fit better than a technician. I mean, Mata is hugely ineffective for us despite all his talent these days, and I think of Gomes as a similar type of player.

He'd be much more useful in a pep team. And while we'll have games where we dominate and having someone like him to pick a lock could be useful, I'd guess that wasn't enough for either side.

If it's true then good luck to him.

Very talented player but I always doubted his ability to break into the first team with Ole's obsession with giving Pereira and Lingard gametime instead.

He could go the way of Pogba and make a huge name for himself, or go the way of Ravel Morrison and Ashley Fletcher etc. I'm going to stick my neck out and predict the latter. Bigger talents than him have left us and we haven't really suffered (maybe Pogba, Rossi and Pique aside).

Probably saw ineffective Lingard and washed up Mata in front of him and thought nah. Don't blame him. Suspect he'll go on to have a very good career.

My thinking is he would have been able to agree a deal with clubs abroad with six months left on his contract. Letting it run out entirely suggests to me he might be going to somewhere like Chelsea which I think would be a mistake.

Make no mistake THIS IS OLES FAULT

Another reason why i dont think his up for the job and ill stand by that statement

The amount of chances he was giving lingard and pierera when they were clearly out of their depth, lingard not scoring or assisting in the premier league in 1 year yet he was STILL getting in ahead of gomes, let that sink in he was still giving lingard chances ahead of gomes in the number 10 role before we bought Bruno, and not once did lingard play even ok let alone good

I'm fuming, can see why ole got Cardiff relegated he hasn't got a clue,he will never be on klopp or peps level, and man United should be aiming higher than this fraud.

Watch gomes go on to become a world class player

I've read all your previous comments and my conclusion is that you're either a Bertie or Dipper troll..:boring::devil:

Agreed

Sancho out, Brandt to the left wing and Gomes in the CAM. They earn a great young player and sell Sancho for £100m+ profit. Sounds a good plan to me.

If the manager gave chances, and several to a number of the clubs prospects this season, and limited Angel Gomes' chances, maybe the problem is that Angel Gomes just isn't good enough, yet. Will he ever be? We'll find out in a few years

How can you actually say he's a world class talent? He has done absolutely nothing to show anyone he is such a talent . He is 20 soon and there is many players at his age who are genuine world class talents . Gomes most definitely isn't one of them
I think he had the tools to be a world class talent. He can pass, shoot, dribble, amazing balance and agility. He has done superb in the youth teams and played well for England. 3 years ago, he and Foden were on parr. Foden then got game time. We should of sent Gomes on loan to harness that talent.

Remember, talent needs to be managed and some players only really develop after a certain age. Look at KDB, for me the best midfielder in the world. He only made his name in Germany at his early 20s. Before that, he was written off by Chelsea, although it was Jose that god rid of him. My point is, you can still be a world class talent at 20 as long as you have the tools. The problem with Angel now is he has barely played and that is down to our club not giving him lpan spells.

Could well be, but I think he did WANT to stay, but was either playing chicken with United hoping they'd cave and give him what he wants. Now he can make his mind up and choose, but I think if he's brave moving away from England would be best. Germany is a lot less physical too.

Not sure moving to Chelsea is going to be any better at all, they've got Mount, Ziyech, Pulisic, Barkley, RLC in his way already.

Yeah I don't believe this post for one second. Gomes should sign the contract, prove himself on loan and if he proves himself he will feature. But he's not shown something in training. He's still young. Physically he should be in the gym working on his strength. But let us not be immature about this. If Gomes is sensible, he'll resign. If he's not then he runs the risk of being forgotten again in a short space of time. United were patient with Lingard and Gomes needs to look at his game because if he's not convincing the club he can give more now then players off form, then it's up to him to step his game up. It's up to him to prove his quality but again. If he's not being selected, then something isn't quite right. But also Gomes needs to remember he's still young. Yes, some get given chances but evidently they're more ready.

Because he just returned from injury and couldn’t handle playing in the Indian heat. Every time he entered the pitch he was given the armband.

Pogba has come off the bench in matches lately. Guess he just isn’t that good and only a bench player.

Pogba has been out for 8 months and had one game coming off the bench. He started the very next game and he only didn't start against Norwich because we fielded a weaker team. He will be starting every other game going forward (god willing). And every time Young entered the pitch he was given the armband, what's your point?

Angel may have been coming back from an injury, but if he was that important he would have started more games, rather than just 2 out of the 7 games that England played.

Rossi had about 3 decent years at Villarreal then fell off a cliff. Weird to put him alongside Pogba and Pique. Amazingly only 33 years old, despite his best years being over 10 years ago.

Good point, but we should also make the point that loans don't always work either, for example, Januzaj and CBJ in recent times.

He doesn’t even make the bench, it is irrelevant whether he stays or not.

I see it as the opposite. He is a complete different character to Morrison and better than Fletcher. He will go out there with a point to prove. He needs to choose wisely though, i don't think any (top) club would be good for him. Under the right manager/club, i can see him flourishing quite a lot. I believe he can be in the Pogba/Pique category, maybe not in same class directly, but as someone who could start for us and be a great player nonetheless.

Will be interesting to watch how his career transpires. With OgS preaching young & British will be good to see if he actually was/is good enough - with Andreas & Lingard starting ahead of him I’m not surprised he’s leaving.

I have to admit, part of me still hopes he will sign. :nervous::p

He's been massively over hyped by some of the fans on this forum. Can't say im overly bothered he's leaving, personally don't think he'll make it. Perhaps carve out a semi decent career at Europa level but not at the very highest.

Yeah absolutely agree. I think Januzaj had a attitude problem though. That year under Moyes inflated his ego and he thought he had made it. When he looks back at his career, he will regret what could have been. With CBJ, I have not really followed his career since Gaal days. I guess he was not maybe up to the task. Essentially you are right though, loans work and they don't.

Imagine he went Liverpool or City.
Neither play with a 10 and he's shit out wide. So by all means, go there. His career would die.

Any chance he’d end up at Arsenal?
Out of all the top English clubs, they'd be the best bet for him. Arteta seems to be very patient with young english players.

I don't get the flip flopping. He is a fantastic talent even if he does end up leaving. If the boy didn't want to sign a contract, there is not a lot you can do is it.

That's a good point, and concerning. I'd obviously rather he went abroad. There has been no noise other than Chelsea so would be surprised now if he went elsewhere.

If I were him I'd want some assurances of game time. Not because of arrogance or anything, I'd just feel that I was stagnating a bit in my progression. If we can't give that to him then I think moving on's the best move for him. Maybe he makes it, maybe he doesn't - that'll be on him, but I think the club are right to hold their ground. The only criticism I have is that its just bizarre to me how loyal we're being to Lingard, unless Gomes is genuinely not that great in practice.

I’m not overly bothered about this one. I really don’t get the hype with him.

Plus, if the club have offered him a deal, what more can they do? Could play him more, but as I say, I don’t think he’s shown enough in the games he has played to warrant more time. Greenwood forced his way in, Gomes hasn’t

So you're a big Ole fan then?

Too small. If you are that tiny you have to be exceptional to make it in the PL. He's not exceptional. Skillful player for sure but that's about it. I don't think he will come back to haunt us.

People worrying about him going to Chelsea..... How is he going to get in their team. He'd be behind nearly every one of their attacking mids and forwards for me. He's nowhere near as good as likes of Mount or Pullisic. Chelsea would be a terrible move for him.

The truth about his England career is that he was the golden boy of the 2000 group and was the captain of the side up to a crucial point. His star started to fade before the U17 World Cup. He was injured for the u17 Euros and CHO started to make a name for himself in his position. England lost on pens in the final. He went into the U17 World Cup injured and made a couple of apps in the group stage from the bench, he did well and scored a lovely freekick but in the knockout game against Japan he was very poor. He was dropped after that game from the XI and whilst he did lift the World Cup as captain after coming on as a sub in the final he was not a key player in the success.

Since then the likes of Sancho, Sessegnon, Foden and CHO have all over taken him. Younger players like Greenwood are ahead of him in the England setup.

England still rate him and value him but he's mostly plays in the 20s at the moment which is always seen as an u21 reserve side.

Hopefully he still makes a name for himself but I've long had reservations about his physicality. More his stamina and how he gets overrun and lost in games.

This, He's 5'2. When you go to old trafford you can see just how small he is. In the first leg of the semi final with City he was up against Rodri who honestly looked double his size.

I'm not worried at all. Good luck to him, he may be ok playing abroad but not built to play in the Premier league. He'll be way behind Gilmour at Chelsea.
