Angel Gomes Watch

Sensational player, if not for his height, he'd be ideal next to Casemiro in a few years time.

He's close to Frenkie in terms of style.

I would bring him back in a year or two. Let him develop further at Lille in midfield. He belongs here.

It's the U21s, lads (and he's nearly 23).
U21s at that level isn't the same as the U21s we see in club football. A lot of the players already have first team experience unlike the U21s we're used to for United's reserves. And the age thing isn't really a gotcha. When Spain won in 2013, De Gea was 22, and Thiago was 23. Similarly for the Dutch side, Strootman and Blind were 23.

Gomes can still be an option for that position. It's just best to let him develop another year or two in France.

Alberto Moreno and Illarramendi looked absolutely class that tournament, the level of competition has to be a factor there.

Look nobody is saying it's PL level. It's just not as bad as the usual u21 level, which was a sweeping general statement you made. Gomes is about to turn 23 years old late August. He's still young enough to develop, especially in the cm position, which is generally not seen as easy to get gametime compared to attackers.

Not much we can do if he doesn't sign a contract. He was miles away from the first team here and wanted to go out and test himself

He didn't sign a contract because he wasn't allowed to go out on loan, two years in a row.

Not surprised at all. The talent was always there for anyone who was willing to look. Says a lot about the club that technical players like this are the ones that are always let go without fail and the physical brainless ones are the ones getting the opportunities. Its why I almost never get excited when I see great youngsters we sign killing it in the under 21s or out on loan.Their chances of being given a fair shot to make it full time at the club are next to zero. Amad and Mejbri are next. Under Fergie it used to be that if you were really promising, it was almost guaranteed that he would give you a fair chance in his team. Not anymore. Our youngsters now get garbage time minutes or sit on the bench for the entire season and the club uses that to say they promote youngsters. Laughable.

Absolute rubbish.

Hope he moves out of farmers league soon. He should come back to PL, a team like Brighton would be perfect for him. I want him to succeed, and prove his doubters wrong.

I want our youth players to be given chances more than anyone - but really I’m struggling to think of anyone that has made it, or made it to a big club without us given them a chance - outside of Pogba, who was under the Fergie days.

Januzaj was given chances but is now a mid table player in Spain.
Pereira is doing well at Fulham but given plenty of chances here and failed to shine.
Fosu Mensah was ruined by injuries - and 23 games in 3 seasons for Leverkusens suggests he’s still struggling.
Garner wasn’t given a chance yes, but he hasn’t been all that impressive for Everton (yet).

He’s looked really tidy in the matches recently. You lot have been crying out for a press resistant midfielder every season yet you had one and let him go? What happened there?

He needed first team football and he still isn’t ready physically for the prem even now.

Been class in the Ligue 1 from deep to be fair.

Has he?

It's not supposed to be a "gotcha". I'm just pointing out that the performances here don't really do anything to challenge the concerns people have about his ability to perform similarly in the Premier League.

By the summer of 2013 De Gea had played over 100 league games across La Liga and the Premier League and Thiago had made nearly 70 appearances for a Barcelona side that had won four of the last five La Liga titles. They were both also competing for places in a Spain squad that were World and double European champions. Thiago had even received full caps before this tournament.

There being a handful of slightly older, more experienced players doesn't really do anything to change the fact that this is still essentially a youth tournament.

He didn't sign a contract because he wasn't allowed to go out on loan, two years in a row.

He left when he was 19, and was 18 when the season began. It's very likely he'd have gone on loan the following season having had the time to develop physically a bit more.

A quick scan through our loans reveals most, if not all, players in that age bracket that get loaned out are loaned out in January, and most end up in non-league, with a handful in League Two and even fewer in League One.

He'd have been eaten alive on a loan like that.

The guy has always been tidy as feck. He left because he thought it would be better for his development compared to a loan which is fair enough. Works quite well for some players.
He has stated he would love to come back here one day. Hope it happens since i am big fan.

He literally went on loan his first season at Lille.

The issue wasn't a loan. The issue was English football, which funnily enough, is what United needed to develop him for.

What is the issue with English football..?

Have you seen him? He's developed a bit over the last couple of years, but the concern has always been his size. He's short, and as a teenager, he was basically 9 stone soaking wet.

The technical talent was always there, a level below Mason. If he was 6 foot there’s no way we would’ve let him go, with the way he’s going I do think he’ll be back at some point. Very good player.

Who would blame him. He was denied multiple loans because the club wanted him as a backup for the first team but never actually got the chance to get on the pitch. He basically wasted 2 years of his career which could have been better spent out on loan rather than rotting in our reserves.

We didn't let him go, he refused to sign a new contract. Not being funny but it's been mentioned in lots of comments if you'd care to read them.

I always thought he was more technically gifted than Mason, he's one of the most technically gifted players we've produced in the 21st century.

Again, he was 19 when he left.

"wasted 2 years of his career" is just a massive exaggeration.

Most players that age haven't even begun their senior careers.

We should try to get him back next summer when he will have 1 year left on his contract.

I don't see how he's not above mason technically.

If i have seen him? Yes, loads of times. And even though he is shorter than most players he´s up against, i have honestly never felt it was as big of an issue as you might think.
His very low center of gravity and good balance seems to make him quite sturdy and hard to push over.

It was very clearly an issue when he was younger, which is my point.

Fair enough, same thing has happened plenty of times with our youth aswell. Haven’t seen any of him outside of these England matches but he’s always a name I’d heard spoken highly of. If I’m not mistaken he was more of a winger/attacking mid in his youth?

Seen comments write him off because of his age but sometimes it takes time, especially for players in his role to show their quality. Only takes the right environment, manager etc. He’d probably look amazing in the current Brighton team as others have said.

Apologies 4G a bit crap at the moment harder to read through what’s been said.

Yeah his technique stood out instantly. Love players like that.

He has always been the smallest guy on the pitch, never felt it was a big issue for him. Are there any games or clips you can point to where it clearly shows the problems he had with size?

Me too, never really understood the obsession we seem to have with filling our midfield with players the size of basketball players.
Oh, Fellaini is big, he can control things in the middle of the pitch i am sure!! Mctominays size must make him a suitable starter in a team with the ambition to win titles, right?
Pogba was always more of an attacking player with tons of flair, creativity and swagger, but, and that´s a big but, he is also huge so that means we need to play him as a regular cm with lots of defensive duties.
Would love to have players with quicker feet and top level technical skills in areas where it is important and could improve our build up from deep and overall possession play.

There's a world of difference between being smaller than players your age that are still developing themselves, and being smaller than seasoned pros.

Could be the perfect De Jong alternative we've been looking for since ages. We should scout him intensively next season.

It kind of seems like people mostly want him back based on a few games for England U21s, rather than from watching him play regularly for Lille?

He actually organized two different loans while he was here and they were both stopped by the club. He was begging to go on loan.
He left because we had absolutely zero plan for him while Lille had a detailed plan for his development which unsurprisingly has gone exactly as expected.

I stand corrected!
