Angel Gomes Watch

It's Man United....come here and prove you have what it takes to displace Mainoo. It's a squad game after all.

I don't think his attributes will fit in with the midfielders we need. We need more physicality, not less.

Being short doesn't equal being weak. Some people here are ready to publish a diatribe based on an image they saw online.

Anyone know how he's getting on this season? I've only seen him for England where I was impressed. Now more than ever, I think his profile would fit perfectly next to Ugarte in midfield.

Would be a good impact player to help unlock defences as a replacement for Eriksen

This. He’s a free agent this summer, isn’t he? If that’s the case, he’d be a solid addition to the squad, offering versatility to play both in the pivot and as a number 10. That said, I’d be concerned about his lack of physicality in the pivot, especially since that’s an area where we’re already struggling.

I think his big weaknesses is aerial ability and top end pace. As far as I recall, he's got good stamina, work rate and acceleration. I think we need someone like Gomes in the midfield, someone's who's press resistant, has a good range of passing and progresses the ball.

Only just getting back into matchday squads now after the injury.

Seeing that we sometimes try to place Bruno in one of those midfield positions, Gomes should be able to handle that aspect decently enough. He certainly would be on my radar as well as a great rotation option for a good price. He shouldn't be the player we bring in to partner Ugarte in the starting lineup though.

Apparently he's just back from injury.

Ah right, was it a bad injury, do you know?
Calf problem he'd been playing through. He posted something back in November saying he was focusing on recovery, which you can't really blame him for as he enters the end of his contract.

An upgrade on Mainoo.

If he wasn't on a free would you still bring him back to the club ?
Depends on the fee, but him being home grown and available on a free to replace Eriksen after his contract expires makes it a no brainer for squad depth, especially if things are tight from a PSR perspective with all the other gaping holes in the team to fix.

Apparently he's just back from injury.

He came off the bench for 25 mins on the 10th, not in the squad for the cup game 14th and an unused sub for the game yesterday.

They would have given him at least 60 mins yesterday if his involvement was crucial, hes a decent player but I dont think he was someone in their XI they didnt have decent back ups for.

I have no idea if we’re after Gomes, but would imagine losing Heaton, Evans and Rashford from the squad would lead to some need to find some qualifying homegrown talent for the PL and UEFA squad quotas going forward whilst some of the young players in and around the squad are under the age of 21.

Do fans really want him back? If he wasn't good enough first time around i doubt he'll be good a second time

Anyone who listened to the TOTD interview with him will know the Spurs thing is BS.

Yeah because players tend to stay the same player they were when they were 19 throughout their entire careers. Remember what a flop Pique was for Barca? Never mind the fact that we're a far stronger team now than when Gomes left.

CaughtOffside not the best source I know. Where would he play for us, central midfield or one of number 10 positions?

Not sure about this. We lack a bit of physicality and running power. Does he have a good engine? Is he good off the ball?

Would love him back as a squad/rotation option. Dont think that appeals to Angel and rightfully so

Wouldn’t mind him at all as a backup #10.
Unless we’re going to stay a team who can only play on the counter-attack I don’t think the 10s would need to be some kind of physical monsters.

I haven’t seen anything of Lille to comment on him but given our current financial situation I’d be surprised if this wasn’t being given at least some thought. A homegrown player from our own academy who has seemingly improved well and is on a free transfer will tick boxes. Eriksen almost certainly going as well creates room.

Personally, would love to see Angel Gomes back at the club, I had such high hopes for him before he left us previously.

No Director of Football or Head of Recruitment will be selling the opportunity to a 24 year old England international as coming in to be a rotation or back up option. If we are keen, I am sure they will be outlining how and where his skills, composure and technique can be deployed and demonstrating the impact he can make on the team. Gone are the days when any player is guaranteed a starting spot, especially at United.

For the system that Amorim wants to eventually play – dominant, front foot and flooding midfield - wing backs, 1 of the 3 centre halves stepping out, 2 CMs, 2 x floating #10s – there’s definitely a place for a clever and composed playmaker. Not every player needs to be a Dorgu/Ugarte non-stop running machine or physical specimen. And playing upwards of 50-60 games a year and at times 9-10 games a month with injuries etc, you need 4-5 frontline CMs, minimum.

Would love to see this happen, if only for Angel, Gabriele (Biancheri), Godwill and Heaven in the same team.

He’s got a great engine and tenacious however he’s only 5’6/5’7 I think but he can play DLP/8/10 and he costs nothing, in a 3421 system where he can play in 4 positions, this seems like a no brainer for me as a free transfer.
