Angel Gomes Watch

In terms of his touch and passing quality he would fit into this ten hag team perfectly. If he was available for free or very cheaply we should definitely bring him back to add more depth.

Not some iconic performance from the comp but happy to see that he's doing well playing regular football.

There is a touch of Eriksen about him, glad to see him doing well.

Looking very classy! Reminds me of Juninho (Middlesbrough version) with his small frame and the way he glides across the pitch.

Doesn't have the physical attributes required, would be useless trying to press.

We have to learn to let players go without wanting them back for depth.

Happy to see him being a regular starter at Lille under Fonseca. Three goals and three assists in 26 matches is not great, but especially earlier in the season he was playing deeper in midfield. Looking forward for him to take the next step in terms of efficiency. Hopefully LOSC make it to Europe this season. Will be interesting to follow his development and career, who knows he might even get an international cap someday. Will be tough for England but perhaps for Portugal?

Exact same numbers as Fred got in his last 8 matches. Getting dog’s abuse from a lot of our fans in the process.

Wow that's impressive. I'm always kind of torn on Fred every season (and match tbh). Does the ugly work in big matches so well, and recently involved in a lot of goals as you pointed out, which is great. But at the same time he loses balls in dangerous areas, starts the opponent's counters and usually gives them free kicks close to the box. I like his type of aggressive players, if he developed into a bit more composed player in possession (especially in our own half), I think a lot of the (unwarranted) abuse would die down. In my opinion he does a lot of things right when closer to the opponent's box, although his shooting still needs a bit of work (Benni please!).

Happy to see him do well, seems like an integral part of this squad. Also not surprised that he plays better next to Casemiro compared to our other midfielders. They've also played together for Brazil and I think that shows. Having Casemiro next to him allows Fred to play a bit higher up the pitch and that suits him well.

Yup, and I bet had Fred played as bad as Gomes did in the recent Lille Vs PSG game, they'd be calls to cancel Fred's contract right away!

He is someone who should be being talked about as a Mount alternative, maybe a season too early and another of regular football for Lille will round him out more but I think he is the only youth player who has left us in the last 5 years who is genuinely worth another look. I think he is fantastic and exactly what both we and England (as a sub option) need at the minute.

He was always a terrific talent and should never have been allowed to leave. Though I always preferred him as a deep lying playmaker than a Mount type.

Yeah, I mean as an alternative in CM or as a creative hub from deep. Great passing range, good dribbler and can evade pressure, has also really gotten stronger on the ball in a physically imposing league, he can also effect the game in the half spaces further forward.

He's still only 22? Ffs could we not have loaned him or put in a buy-back clause?

He turned down a contract. I don't think he wanted to be constantly farmed out, he wanted a consistent environment.

I was always a fan. Very good technically, a bit of flair and press resistant. Perhaps not the strongest defensively, but alongside Casemiro you don't need to be. I would much rather have him as an option than McTominay.

He had a good first game in that deep position for England in the 2023 u21 Euros.

He is progressing well.

He made the right decision, no point going on endless loans when a good offer from a good club is on the table.

He’s doing really well in France but I just think he’s not strong enough to cope with the intensity of the EPL

He knew he was too good to be sitting on our bench or in the stands without playing time. It was quite obvious that he was talented and would make it in a top 5 league somewhere. Just too good technically to fail. I am happy that he made it at Lille, which a lot of people questioned years ago. He needed playing time and got it somewhere else. We just never gave him the trust and the minutes.

I am a big fan and was one that thought that we handled him badly. I think he will move to a top club or to a good PL side in a couple of years. Think he now found his feet at the senior level and will now hopefully kick on to improve further.

He didn’t want to stay to be a sub (which is what he’d be) so no regrets on him leaving.

Even the guy we are trying to sign, Mason mount went to a few loans before getting his chance. He wasn't ready at the time and should have accepted a contract and a loan. His done what's best for him so can't fault him. I would argue he is still not ready to start for us. Before he left some said just like Lingard he wouldn't be ready until around 23 and its looking like there were on to something.

I was listening to a podcast where Carl Anka (journo/Utd fan) was talking about him playing well for Lille in the deeper position.

He commented that, whilst he's still probably not good enough to start for Utd, if he was coming through now he'd have a manager in EtH who'd appreciate him and probably have given him a chance.

The only reason Mount got a chance is their club had a transfer ban. He would have either left, or stuck in loan hell if not for that.

Gomes leaving was a good decision, and is good for his development.

He made a great decision for his career. It's paid off. Great stuff, he's got a ton of talent and he's developing really well.
