Angel Gomes Watch

Good to see. He was destined for the playmaking role in central midfield. Pair him with a defensive 6 (Casemiro :) ) and it would work.

Too talented to not have a good career. I would not mind going for him in the future once he establishes himself in that role. He can do it. Just needs game time and he will learn and adjust.

He was defensively overwhelmed last night and gave away the ball in the first half a fair few times. PSG were relentless though

You can’t play as a 6 and not have any influence on the defensive side of the game, he has zero influence. His distribution and passing is great but that’s half of the work. Anyone thinking he would get away with that in the Premier League is kidding themselves. He’s just not physical enough. Bernardo Silva is slight or David Silva but they know how to ride challenges and played further forward too. Gomes won’t survive for long playing that deep.
Isn't he about Ngolo Kante's height?

The whole team was. However, he is a baby in that position. Give it a couple of years, and then see. He obviously needs to learn positioning and how to control and affect games in that psoition both offensively and defensively, but that comes with expereince and game time. Lille were all over the place as a team.

His peers from that U17 team like Foden, Sancho and Gallagher have all outshone him, although he was the captain of the team.

I also see this current role as his best one.

Height isn’t the concern, Kante is strong as hell. So no comparison there. It’s same with Makelele who was little too but strong as a bison and read the game exceptionally well.
You are NOT getting it. If he is the same height and size as a Kante its laughable to say he would not ever surivive in the EPL in such a role. Especailly when he has the required technical skill and footballing inteligence for a deeper midfield role. Don't forget he is 21 and still has plenty of physical development to still go through.

Its pretty obvious if his future proves to be as a defensive or holding midfielder he will have to put on more muscle and develop more core strength. Which isn't an impossibility. He will even have Kante as a blue print to model himself on.

Another guy praised to the heavens in here who will be forgotten 2 years from now

Eh? I can see him putting on some muscle perhaps. But I'm pretty sure he's stopped growing. Same with Amad, they're not getting any bigger.

Can’t believe it’s almost two years since this thread was started. Safe to say that nothing which has happened since makes it look any more like he was ready to play in our first team when he left. And that’s one of our weakest first teams in the history of this club.

You are conflating all physical development with growth. Both Amad and Angel can get more muscle mass, mbi and core strength. Same way CR7 and Goretzka went from Januszaj physique to physical specimen. These two can get much stronger without adding height. How do you think the likes of Scholes survived in the heart of midfield and Messi has in attack vs CBs almost twice his size?

Why don't you leave this thread then? Nobody cares about your complaints. There are some of us who want to talk about a former United youth player. We don't need your dumb comments here.

That was your own comment actually but whatever, I’ll never understand your obsession so happy to leave you to it. One question before I leave though. Why aren’t you lovingly curating threads about all the other former United youth players that left the club over the same period of time? Don’t you care about their careers? Seems a bit unfair for someone with such a keen interest in our youth to ignore the rest of them.

How doesn’t he win 100% of his ground duels? He’s nearer to it than anyone else on the pitch!

Anyone see him making it at a top level side?
No.

Just don't see enough about him to really get excited about still.

A steady player who'll have a decent career but I don't see an elite club banging on his door anytime soon.
Still very young though, so could change.

Probably not but still young enough that he might, especially given his physique you'd think he will come into his prime a bit later.

I do think he'll be good enough to make it for a decent mid table/top 8 PL or La Liga side though, and in today's market that level of player can go for £20-£30m, so it's a shame we lost him on a free even if he doesn't reach a level where he would have played for us. I expect he will play CL or Europa League football at some point and do well.

Edit: just checked and he already played CL last season, got a nice assist and goal vs Wolfsburg.

Thanks for the answers.

Shame how it turned out with him, the lads been dealt a poor hand in terms of his physique.

He’s playing in a double pivot with Benjamin Andre who is a strong DM. He probably needs someone like that next to him. It will be interesting to see how he develops as it seems they’ll persist with him in that position.

Another weird post from you. My comment was aimed at those complaining about this thread and the posters watching a former United youth player by saying we're wasting our time. That's basically what that sentiment was about, hence my comment. Again, just leave if you're just going to troll. That's what the "who cares" post was aimed at. You trying to twist it into something is not is either just a lack of comprehension or you're just here to troll.

Not going to bother with the rest. You're acting like a child.

Chances are he won't become a top player. That's usually the safe bet when discussing our former youth players. He has some tools to make him one though, and he was very talented in comparison to a lot of his teammates in that age group. Probably the reason many of us continue to pay attention to him.

He will grow under this manager. Fonseca is usually good at nurturing young players and he is a ballsy manager who will try to impose the rhythm of the game whenever is possible.

I watched the first half of the game against Montpellier and was impressed by him. Happy to see him doing well.

Keeps getting picked for Lille, seems like he has established himself as a starter there now. Really happy for him.

Which Erikson role? Spuds or the current pivot at the base of the midfield? I always thought Angel was an attacking mid or a 10.
Plays a bit deeper for Lille, more like a dlp. I would guess depth for Eriksens role. But seriously doubt us or any of the big clubs are interested at the moment. Would not be too surprised if he got linked to some of the smaller PL clubs in the near future.

Wasnt he part of a cult or something? I forgot but there was a discussion about it here.

Not some iconic performance from the comp but happy to see that he's doing well playing regular football.
