So we have 2 number 9's and 3 number 10's yeah massive difference isn't there

Yes... that difference is 1. That 1 being the 1 spot on the bench that Greenwood gets and Gomes doesn't :wenger:

It makes you wonder what the coaching staff are seeing from the likes of Mata and Lingard in training given the rest of the fecking world seemingly can see that Gomes is the better choice long term and potentially short term also.

I agree. People take it as a given he'll get games in the Europa or the Cup's but Ole probably knows he's under pressure if not to finish top 4 then to certainly deliver a trophy

Unfortunately everything points to Gomes not being particularly rated (or at least thought ready yet) so just got to hope that doesn't stop him extending his contract with us
Gomes is very highly rated. Nicky Butt just took up a new role at the club which involves bridging the gap between the youth set up and the first team. Butt just mentioned 2 players in an interview talking about who will step up this season, those 2 players were Greenwood and Gomes. Gomes is in the managers plans and I would be very surprised if he didn't get at least the Europa League group games.

I think he’ll get on to the pitch against Palace this weekend, hopefully it’s for more than 2 minutes at the end though.

Think Greenwood will also get a good amount of game time too personally.

Seeing him and Greenwood in the team during pre-season was so exciting.

I would love to see them both get meaningful minutes at the weekend.

Years ago there was 42 league games along with european games and cup games playing mostly twice a week. There was also only a 12th man.

They also walked half the match and drank and smoke at half time. Not quite the same intensity is it.

You say you cant agree with what I say at all and then go and state it's bodies which is why Gomes is behind Greenwood - yeah because we're stocked full of midfielders/number 10's aren't we?

Fair enough if you disagree but at least present a plausible retort
He's got a point though. In Greenwood's case our 2 strikers start the game together and we need one on the bench which happens to be him. But in Gomes case he has Lingard who starts then Mata on the bench and even Perreira can play there, so it's harder for him to get a look in compared to Greenwood.

If Ole is going to keep playing Jlingz and make his job harder (winning) that way.. not much to do about it.

However when Mata came on last game he was terrible. Atleast give Gomes the Mata benchspot next match.

You're talking shit

There's a gap in who we have available for the first team at #9, while there isn't at #10. That seems to me to be why Greenwood is on the bench and Gomes isn't.

I'm struggling to see what's so unreasonable about that as an opinion, but if you've got anything, by all means tell me rather than just shitposting to get the last word in.

I hope he makes the squad for Saturday and gets some time out there...i'm baffled how perreira, mata, and lingard are ahead of them when he outplayed each of them in preseason in my eyes.

Start him this week. Enough of could be should be on the bench. It's palace. We're at home. Let's get at them from the go. If it were up to me I'd throw both Gomed and Greenwood in. If anything, they'll be spurred on by playing together given they've done so plenty of times before.

Agreed. It's not a huge risk. None imo.

I'm not surprised he hasn't featured yet, think it was the plan to get the season under way, then gradually integrate the youngsters into the team, probably from the bench initially, but I really believe that by the end of the season, Gomes will have nailed that 10 spot.

Didnt the same happen with lingard when SAF said he was too small so his debut and break through will be a bit later

Perhaps the benefit of playing in the Europa is that players like him will get a game. Lots of games coming up and it's going to be a busy period. We are guaranteed to have some injuries and tired legs.

I'd leave it to the experts and not so much follow the hype from those armchairs. If anyone thinks for one second Ole doesn't full support his younger players, then they need to give their opinions a rest. If Gomes proves himself worthy, then his rewards will come. As Ole works with him on a daily basis, he knows him a darn site better than the rest of the world.

Has Greenwood even played at #9 at all for the first team? He has been used on the right, where both Mata and Lingard have been used before too. So that can’t be the reason.

No its reason because it gets him on the bench and from the bench he can always be brought on to play from the right to get a few minutes.

In Gomes case he can't make the bench because there is always another number 10 or 2 on the bench therefore making it harder for him to make the squad. If there were no other 10 in front of him on the bench, he'd have most likely been selected in the squad and be thrown in either on the right, center or middle just to get a couple of minutes under his belt like Greenwood.

We don't know what happens on a daily basis. One thing is preseason which is a bit of an easier experience for young players, but who's not to say that everyday in training he's not getting knocked off the ball easily by players like Lingard and whilst demonstrating clear signs of quality he's just a bit short in the physicality at the moment?

If every days he's training with the first team and making players like Lingard and Pereira look awful, you can guarantee he'd be in the matchday squad.

However, as much as you don't want to believe it, it's clearly not the case. He must be struggling when compared to those players or he would quite simply be ahead of them.

Long term doesn't matter we have to win games now. Short term nobody knows, but the people that watch them every day Are in a better situation to judge. Fans here have watched gomes in mayve 10 mins of competitive football

Mata only had 3 league goals & 2 assists last season in league game. That’s Awful contribution. I can’t see how we can win a game now with that output. Thus, we can see that it won’t make it worse to see Gomes or Greenwood playing over Mata.

Whether he does or not remains to be seen, what i can guarantee is that if he plays them it'll be the right decision and if he doesn't that will also apparently be the right decision.

We can only wait and see and hopefully not have to make excuses like you've listed.

Makes a lot of sense that and no doubt it is the case. We would love to believe he is a better player than Lingard but can he run and press as well as Lingard, probably not. That running and pressing looks like its going to be very much key to Ole’s style of play so until he can match that or get close he won’t be replacing him week in and week out in proper EPL games.

He’ll get a shot in the European and Cup games but hopefully in fairly strong sides rather than ones that are weak so he can showcase his ability in a proper first team.

Huh, don't see any critics at all, so I'll bite. He's promising but just throwing him in the starting XI over players like Mata / Lingard isn't the greatest idea. At this point in his development, it's nicer to bring him on as a sub when we're trouncing the opposition and let him start against lower league teams in the league cup and maybe the Euro cup.

I understand the frustration with Lingard and Mata but just throwing Gomes / Greenwood on is not the solution.

I completely agree. The level of hype is ridiculous, this is a kid, and expecting him to come in and perform is an unfair expectation. Utd NEED to be top 4 this season and that's going to be a dog fight. He needs minutes to develop his game and show what he can do, and Ole has clearly shown there's a path into the squad for young players. However, that same manager has decided he currently isn't ready. So far, for all the frustration, United have 4 points from 2 tricky matches, and things are going well. If leading against Palace on Saturday, that would be a good time to start giving him minutes. NEEDING something from him in a match, however, would be an unfair demand at this stage and possibly set back his confidence and development.

I think you are wrong. Not saying that you are wrong though. This is not aimed at you personally but in general this is the kind of thinking that never gets you anywhere. Playing the safe card. Partly why coaches like Pep are great are because he goes his own way and is not playing anything safe. The same mindset goes in the world in general. My pretty vague point here is: Greenwood and Gomes are just one little chance from making it, exactly like Rashford did. Believe. We won't get anywhere with Mata. We've already tried it over 100 times.

Except this is wrong - it’s no different for Greenwood. Lingard, Mata and Pereira have all played no.10, but have all played from the right too as well as James. The reason Greenwood makes the bench over Gomes is because he is more highly thought of and ahead in the pecking order generally.

And however much you want to make stuff up there is 0% chance he has gone from bodying the shit out of Charlie Adam and playing him off the park to being bullied by Lingard. We don't need to see training, we've seen it in countless games where he has muscled off fully grown experienced professionals who are all stronger than Lingard.
