This midget needs to play next game, even 20 mins.

Hysteria over not playing vs fecking wolves (they're not shit at home)

He can play football much better than Lingard when the ball's at his feet, for that reason alone he should be involved in a game where we expect a lot of possession.

Isn't even making the bench while shite like Lingard, Mata and Pereira get minutes. And there were people in this thread telling me he'd get loads of chances.

I hope Gomes gets his chance against Palace. Lingard and Mata proved they weren't up to scratch today, and a home game against a side who struggle for goals is as good a time as any to integrate him.

Wolves are average at best. Stop this overrating just because they fluked a draw against City last year. You seen them tonight, a horribly average side

Really, really hope he gets a chance against Crystal Palace. Pereira was shit against Chelsea in the 10 position as was Lingard tonight against Wolves.

Just give the lad a chance!

Have a sneaking feeling he might start. I hope so too.

Fair enough he wasn’t in the squad for Chelsea and wolves really

Theres no chance . He wont even be on the bench it's obvious Ole doesn't rate him

Not a fan of his corners, but I like his freekicks that he tries to score.

At least that's something. We can't be drafting in Pereira purely because he can take set pieces. Is there a set piece maestro in waiting in the youth setup?

They've not lost a game at home in 7 months I believe ? Certainly aren't a world class side but they are potent especially against the league's best sides. A real bannana skin team.

Those two Portugese players they have in midfield would be starters for us though. Both way better than McT.

WTF  his ball control and the way he turns are quite frankly amazing. I love the way he shifts it side to side while moving forwards, it's just impossible to predict.

What a player
Think his technical elegance eroded a bit as he aged. Could be due to a slight growth spurt and even though he was already small to begin with, could improve as he gets more and more used to his adult body.

Jesse Lingard’s can’t pass, is a mediocre finisher, and has no vision. Successive managers like him because he flatters them by doing what they ask and running around. He is an example of the Academy being fetishized, he is not MUQ starter.

Angel Gomes as number 10 would have run and won this game against Wolves. We need someone who can control the ball, who has guile and who can give Pogba the confidence to move up the pitch.

It's been 2 games lads, Chelsea and Wolves.

A bit of patience.

The building up of Gomes in here is reaching frightening proportions. It’s not him I’m worried for though. He’ll be well guided and protected by the coaching staff. It’s half of you lot. Already losing your marbles when he doesn’t play (despite being 18); frothing at the mouth that he’ll leave us if he doesn’t get significant game time; and using his decent preseason performances as a stick to beat every other player who may have the temerity to play in his place.

But where it’ll drive some of you to the loony bin, is when he plays and has a bad game. I don’t know how some of you will cope. No doubt at least half of those who have championed him as the greatest player since Maradona, will be the same ones to call him too small or crap after one bad game.

This attitude towards over hyping young players who have barely played, and then tearing them down when they hit a rough patch, has got to stop. Why do we do it with virtually every prospect we have?

A lot of things have fallen into place for Angel right now:-

1. We are playing with a Number 10 with less defensive responsibilities in a 4-2-3-1 and not 4-4-2 or 4-3-3
2. Ole is handing out starts (like to a 21 year-old Championship player)
3. We have a understaffed midfield and attack
4. Alexis got a hammy and is out for a few weeks.
5. We have a guile shortage in the team

Angel has always been seen as too small for the PL but this is his chance. I hope his contract is not the issue but if you are reading this, Angel, you should grab it.

Spot on. When Gomes is on form, he can play anyone in the world based on talent alone. Playing in the first couple of games of the PL is not a must right now, if he's not on form yesterday, they'd literally be throwing him to the Wolves.

What does Angel have to do to get a start? Today would have been perfect. Does he need to sign his contract first?

To be fair to Ole, we have had issues with Wolves at Wolves in the past.

At home against Palace he should play though. Same with Greenwood. If Ole doesn't start at least one of them in that game, I'd find that extremely disappointing to say the least. Id start both. Pretty sure it'll create a buzz in the team rather than nervousness. Question is whether Ole has that sort of bravery to trust youth.

It's a joke how some of the players are getting minutes ahead of him.
We've had two very difficult fixtures to start the season. I think any manager should be allowed to opt for caution in these two opening games. Next three though - Palace, Southampton and Liecester - are all games we should go into full of confidence, and hence take bold forward minded decisions.

Awful today. If he were good enough he would have trained his way ahead of Jesse and come on today to make the winning contribution. I can see why we haven't extended his contract.

Look, the whole cycle of overhauling young players and then tearing them down is sadly the result of emotional fans, and in general it cannot be changed.

But I'd add that the more he doesn't play the more the hype about him needing to play will go on/increase. Because people keep seeing Lingard and company looking bang average and then recall that gifted kid they saw in the youth teams and pre season and its natural to want to see one replace the other. The only way to quell that feeling and to judge Angel Gomes as a senior pro who has to deal with senior football challenges and difficulties (which he will face) is through opportunities. Till then this is all this thread is going to be. It's only once he starts playing for us when he is looked as a Manchester United player and not a 'wonderkid'.

Fair point but I think this is more encouraging for Mason than Angel, at least Mason seems to be in the picture.

But let’s wait and see.

Yeah, it's just 2 games and we have only 1 game per week. I think many will get chances when we will have 3 games a week.

Hopefully he will get mins against Palace. I think fans are very impatient, playing young players doesn't mean they will play week in week out. We have bloated squad and once you are well into the season, that's when you get an idea how good or bad promoting of young players is/was.

Only two games, but he should be on the bench like Tuanzabe is over our experienced underperforming defenders. SO far underlines the annoyance of Mata signing the contract extension

We desperately need another player who can pass the ball and looking at the squad he’s the best option. Should at least be on the bench in next game but won’t hold my breath.

I didn't expect him to be involved against Chelsea or Wolves, I will be annoyed if he doesn't at least make the bench against Palace. Yesterday's game highlighted the fact that Lingard cannot play against low block defended, Gomes should be able to help against Palace who will no doubt be sitting very deep.

It's pretty depressing that he's the one with the exact qualities we need, he's in his last year of his contract and he's currently behind Lingard, Mata and Pereira to get a game. I honestly feel it would just take him one start at number 10 to show it's his. But he hasn't even made the bench yet.

Palace at home is an ideal opportunity. Needs to happen

Absolutely, and it's the same with Tuanzebe. They don't have 5 full games between them but they're being hyped up as the saviours of our season. They're both exciting prospects but have so far done absolutely nothing to suggest they're ready to be thrown into a Premier League starting lineup. They need to come in slowly over the course of the season and then we will see how good they really are. I'd like to see him regularly on the bench but that's about it for now.

I disagree that it won't hurt him, this over-hyping eventually seeps into the media and has had an effect on plenty of our players in the past. All it takes is one good game and he'll be all over the newspapers.

Its not so much overhyping the player, its peoples frustrations that we dont play this lad when he probably cant be much worse than what lingard and mata offer. His pre season gametime has shown utd fans the potential he has, which is a lot more exciting than lingard and mata.

He can, and if he is it will do him far more damage than a bad performance will to them. They are experienced enough mentally to perform to a minimum standard even on their off days. Gomes doesn't have that yet, if he makes a mistake it could destroy his confidence. Playing well in a few dead rubber pre season games doesn't mean he's ready to start against a Premier League team.

I've no idea why we do it with every prospect. Most of them are nowhere near good enough to begin with.

Angel and Greenwood are clearly better than most young prospects who have come through in quite a while though. And we have a number of very average senior players playing in their positions or in Mason's case a lack of numbers.

They are also probably the two most enjoyable players to watch who have come through the academy since Ravel or Pogba. So the clamour to see more of them is understandable imo.
