I'm still struggling to believe this. Really odd for him to be so direct as to mention di Maria by name. He only just said he couldn't mention players by name because their prices go up.
I mentioned in the twitter feed that the quotes seem similar to some of the pre-season interviews and press conferences where LVG was going on about the squad imbalance and having to play a certain system due to not having specialist wingers! Don't remember him mentioning either Ronaldo or Di Maria. In fact the only player he mentioned during pre-season was Strootman then low and behold the day after Roma said it would cost €80 to buy him!
Which proves Van Gaals point!

He is very very versatile. Who would have thought he would have such a great season in CM for Real.
LvG would find a way to fit him in. And judging by LvG's comments that we lack world calls players providing width he would certainly fit the bill.
I'd welcome him if we could fit Mata, Rooney and RVP in aswell.

My thought process also, but he is available, unhappy and Madrid are willing to sell. Why name drop him of all wingers?

Because he´s really good? Also if this interview was done when we were gonna play Madrid, which seems to be the case given his 4 goals in 3 games Rooney reference, makes sense he´d point to a Madrid player.

A throw away remark about Di Maria, in the course of explaining why we´re playing 3-5-2 (which would be shocking to drop after practicing it all tour long), and apparently its on...:wenger:

Just think about it... He could have easily mentioned about Ronaldo and Robben/Ribery or heck even Adam Johnson. If ever there was a freudian slip... ;)

He did mention Ronaldo.

Four #10s:

Kagaw
Mata
Fellaini :boring:
Januzaj?

Five #9s:

Hernandez
Welbeck
RVP
Rooney
???

Edit: Joga Bonito beat me to it. Wilson probably.

10 is probably Rooney, Mata, Januzaj and Kagawa

9 is probably Rooney, Welbeck, RVP, Hernandez and Will Keane.

Van Gaal's done more than enough interviews now that he considers Rooney 9 and 10.

For some reason I don't believe these quotes. That article has the old 'the players under Moyes aren't the same under Van Gaal' quote, and it's weirdly written

I think the Mirror took the Daily Mail interview. Those old remarks from LvG are only in the Mirror article but nowhere to be seen in the Mail.

Makes sense. A little Venn diagram would've helped! He makes it sound like two separate groups (5+4).

Can't pass up on a player like this. We'd have to find a position for him if he came, even if it means dropping other players.

The papers probably all got the material at the same time but it was either a)embargoed in parts or b) they agreed to hold quotes back for slow news weeks. This gives them license to ramp up the Di Maria to United chatter now the Vidal rumour has got tired. Its all about shifting those papers, getting those clicks, until next weekend.

If LvG wants him we should imagine he knows where he will fit him in.

He wants to play 4-3-3, he's admitted that and says it's his favoured formation. 3-5-2 with Holland and us because of our unbalanced forward options. 4-3-3 is only going to work if Rooney plays wide.

What's interesting is that before the quotes appeared, Journo's in South America were reporting that we had made a bid for Di Maria and it seemed to be picking up abit of pace on Twitter.

I don't believe the quotes.

Simple as this, we will see what happen in the end of the summer windows. If we sign a winger then we are going to use 433 in most of our games. If we sign a centre back then we are going to use 352 in most of our games. If we don't sign anyone else then LVG is still not sure about our best formation this season. I don't see us to sign another midfield this summer. If one to join, one must go. And so far we haven't sell a single of them.

Does that mean Cuadrado is out?
I can't see us getting both.

I'm no reading anything into that comment.

Why get in a fluster about his mention of Di Maria and not Ronaldo too? Because one is unrealistic? I'd say Di Maria at €70m is unrealistic too. I think he's fantastic but I wouldn't want that spent on him.

I think Van Gaal was just using the Champions of Europe as a reference point as to what we should be aiming for. Ancelotti doesn't want Di Maria sold, he's Madrid player, hence the price tag.

This guy has been available for ages yet we leave it 6 days before our first game to perk up our interest, this having just spent 3 weeks getting the lads tuned into 3-5-2, just don't see the logic in leaving it so late.

I haven't seen a single reputable source report that Di Maria would cost €70m

We are a joke at times, i wouldn't be surprised if we don't end up with any significant player. The excuses will flow though and many people will lap those excuses up and then be right back in next summer when we again get linked to the real world class level players only for something to stop us signing them like an alien invasion or something.

I would be very surprised...
I still think at least one marquee signing is coming our way.

He wouldn't cost 70m people assume that because of PSG offer but they fail to understand that PSG proposed that stupid amount because of the loan.
Madrid don't want to loan Di Maria, so PSG tried to make them think twice.
All the "reputable" sources claimed that Madrid wanted something around 50-60m.

I really don't know how we'd fit di Maria into our side currently. I do believe van Gaal will eventually implement his 4-3-3, but it'd currently be next to impossible fitting our best players into an eleven with di Maria included.

When a player of that calibre becomes available you got to buy him.
When real bought Zidane they played him at the LM and it worked out ok. You find a spot or drop someone for Di Maria.

After the promises the club made for this transfer window, if we don't get something big done in the next few weeks, then anyone that is 'right back in next summer' is plainly stupid.

Not that we are going to get him but obviously we would switch to a 4-3-3 if we got DiMaria, i'm pretty sure its the formation Van Gaal wants to use long term.

I'm unsure we could justify spending over £50 million to drop one of Rooney, Mata or van Persie. We're not Real Madrid.

I'm pretty sure too, I just feel with our current squad and lack of any transfer activity it would be for the best to stick with the 3-5-2 this season. We'll need a serious revamp, in my opinion, to implement a strong 4-3-3.

Good thing we have ed controlling the war chest then...he'll figure out the finances I'm sure :)
But to a serious point, I'm sure LVG can find a happy home for him somewhere in the side....I think in the next 2 weeks we will get the necessary players to play the 433

Agreed...

I'd like him here obviously as he's a world class talent, just struggle to see how we could accommodate him right now unless van Gaal intends to use van Persie sparingly, which actually may be the case with his age and injury record.

Please. Lucas Moura, Hazard, Thiago, Sanchez, Fabregas, Sneijder, Herrera (last season), and many more i have forgotten. We are still here like lemmings hanging on for scraps even though most people know its total bollocks all these current links, even if most don't want to admit it. We have been here sooo many times in recent years yet we still keep coming back for more, people need to wake up at some point.
I'll be dissapointed in Woodward IF we don't buy anyone significant because IMO it will mean that he's just a 'yes man' and his slightly cringeworthy interview he gave to MUTV was simply club propaganda.

I get it Stu, we've all been burned over the years transfer wise by the club but I feel as though when Moyes left a new day dawned and we are finally operating in a modern fashion.

I believe by next week your tune may change :)
