Andreas Georgson - New Set-Piece Coach

This from an article about him a couple of years ago sounds promising…

He arrived in November 2019, after the Swedish season had finished. Brentford had been struggling with attacking set pieces, and Georgson’s impact was immediate: up until that November, they had one set-piece goal from 16 games. In the remainder of the season, they scored 16 set-piece goals from 34 matches

The difficulties of getting the actual players on board with repetitive drills, with his specific skill set, as has been mentioned by the coach himself, could be as much a performance and organisational culture fit review, weeding out those incompatible with the holistic criteria required of the team going forward.

Is there a thread that is covering all these staff changes?

I would be interested in seeing how the coaching staff looks like now

Let’s see how many set pieces we don’t score next season then…

Assistant Manager:
Mitchell van der Gaag -> Rene Hake

First team coach (attacking)
Benni McCarthy -> Ruud van Nistelrooy

Individual development & set pieces coach
Eric Ramsay -> Andreas Georgson

GK coach
Richard Hartis -> Jelle ten Rouwelaar

Head physio
Robin Sadler -> Jordan Reece

interesting thread on his work in Southampton

Hope this is true. We’ve had set piece coaches before though and we’ve always been the worse team in the league at them. I still think we should have got the Aston Villa or Arsenal set piece coach.

Isn’t RVN also ETH assistant. He’s always had 2 hasn’t he. Was McClaren and VDG. Now it’s Hake and RVN. But ye id imagine he gets involved in all the attacking coaching.

Yeah I guess technically he’s an AM too.

Having a set piece coach only works if you have players that can take them. Very tough job trying to make someone better at set pieces. Love that we are approaching actual managers though and there downgrading into becoming coaches for us.

Thank you very much for this.

This is as good as getting a new coach, expecting alot of changes on how we play.

Hopefully the adjustment period for the new guys isn’t too long and they can hit the ground running.

Looks like Chiellini
If he turns up to training with that incredibly creepy smile Chiellini held for like 30 minutes during the Euros final, the English contingent may riot.

I remember seeing this guy on a Sky live TV game involving Arsenal once and they were calling him out specifically and thought it was peculiar. I guess he truly is a set piece guru.

Interesting how this reportedly greenlit by Wilcox. Wonder how much input ETH had in this appointment. It does feel like ETH certainly does have the coaching expertise around him now and has no excuses in that respect.

It's madness that it's taken this long to actually appoint someone who has a record of improving set-pieces. They can make such a difference across the season, it just seems so obvious you should do all you can to make the most of them. If Arsenal had been as bad as us from them they'd most likely be battling for top 4 instead of the title.

I remember several years ago people took the piss out of Liverpool employing a throw-in coach but if it earns you an extra 2 or 3 points in a season then it's worth it.

I don't know what he is supposed to do when we haven't got players who can take free kicks and no players good with their head. Probably why he has been seen as good at some clubs and sht at others

The roles have changed for a few these appointments.

As already pointed out, both Ruud and Rene are assistant managers as well as coaches.
And if anything, Ruud most likely pulls seniority with higher credentials than Rene.

As confirmed by The Athletic, Ruud has not simply replaced Benni McCarthy as an attacking coach, either.
He's also a general coach, which makes sense, because he is a good manager with pedigree in his own right.
So he coaches the team in general, as opposed to Benni McCarthy who solely focused on the attacking play.

Although Eric Ramsay was an individual development coach, Andreas Georgson seems to be exclusively hired as a set piece coach.
Ramsay's role as United was very wide and varied under different managers. Georgson's role has so far only been communicated as being a specialist hire for set pieces, which seems like a good idea.

EtH said in the Arsenal presser that Georgson will also be responsible for individual development.

And yes, of course all the coaches work with everyone but it’s obvious why McCarthy was replaced by a former striker. To me at least.

You're right about Georgson, he did actually say that Georgson will also be responsible for individual development.

Great news.

The missing piece is a throw-in coach. With his upper body strength and long arms McTominay could reinvent himself as the new Rory Delap.
