Something I haven't seen mentioned here, at the end of the CL Final defeat to City, Onana was really putting in big energy to pick his teammates spirits back up - he looked liked a real leader in that moment and impressed me a lot, this was before any links to us. Maybe someone can find a video of this?

Only stat affected by 3 big defeats is number of goals conceded. Which is not really a problem because nobody judges goalkeepers by that number anymore.
Funny thing is, the ONLY thing that De Gea was excellent at in the past is shot stopping, and now we have very good parameter to judge this attribute. You can look back to see he was unreal shot stopper a few years ago. But it also proves this is no longer the case.
Stats and eye test always tell the same story when it comes to extremes.
He had some of the best stats in the CL last season. Serie A stats are impacted by him getting back to match fitness after not playing regularly for 18 months. It's the reason he didn't start the season as their no.1 keeper.
Yeah, especially since the PL is twice as fast and competitive as the CL is.
Biggest make or break for him will be how he responds to a big mistake, because he will make them. He's 27 so you'd hope he's coming into his prime and should have a supreme confidence in himself.
Something that encourages me about him how he reacted after the CL final loss. That part where he threw his gloves off and was speaking to Lautaro Martinez. Just reeked of someone with the right attitude.

My understanding is he started the season poorly (understandable as he'd barely played for 18 months), but got better and better as the season wore on.

This is my chief concern - how he copes with the faster pace of the PL, and specifically with forwards who are better and quicker at pressing. I guess at least he’ll have a defender like Martinez nearby who stays alert and will make himself available for a pass. But with DDG going I’d really prefer to have *less* drama from the goalkeeper, rather than more.

Ederson for example gets away with blunder after blinder. The Etihad crowd appreciate that’s because of the type of keeper he is, these things will happen.
I’m not convinced our fan base will be and because it’s Man Utd, his mistakes will be highlighted more.

What like he did against the best team in Europe in the Champions League final, where he basically made them stop even trying to press him after the first 15 minutes, as he kept embarrassing them and breaking their press.
There will be the odd blunder but he is a massive upgrade for the way we want to play football!
We tolerated mistake after mistake from DDG for 5 years. I think from all PL clubs, we have the most mistake tolerant fanbase. I think Onana will be more than fine here.

Not disagreeing. And at one degree, I m happy that in general we accept mistakes. I think this is one of the reasons we always have young, immature players in our team. Even though I think we have become too acceptable, which has lead to lowering our standards.

Sounds like you are cherry picking which things to look at, stats and eye test often indicate very different things.
If you compare stats in different leagues or time periods for the same gk, you get huge discrepancies.
The eye test tells me he was a good shot stopper last season until the last two months where he made a couple of horrendous mistakes.
If he was a bad shot stopper he would not have gotten golden glove. With more than eight different cb pairings this season that would have been impossible.
As long as we're winning, mistakes are easily forgiven. Now if we lose (or even draw), we tend to look for scapegoat(s). It's just the way it goes.
The way some people talk about the PL as the biggest, strongest, fastest league in the world, you'd think that peasants were being picked up and thrown into the Colloseum. The level of hyperbole is unreal.
It's not even the most pressing league in Europe, so let's not worry about Onana shitting his pants at PL teams pressing him.
