Henderson's time in goal was the only time in the last five years that we've averaged less than a goal per game conceded.

That's mind blowing for me. It's a very simple stat but powerful for me. I am surprised we have continued with DDG for 2 more seasons despite seeing the difference Henderson made. The club should have moved on from DDG 2 yrs ago. There may have been intangible leadership benefits but still...

Over the season Henderson played Man City twice, Liverpool twice, Spurs once, AC Milan twice, West Ham three times when they were having their great season and between 4th-7th in the league, Leicester once when they were likewise having a great season and finishing 5th, Real Sociedad twice. In other words, he had more than enough good opposition. Overall he conceded 22 goals in 26 matches.

18/19: De Gea conceded 1.34 goals per game
19/20: De Gea conceded 1.02 goals per game
20/21: De Gea conceded 1.19 goals per game / Henderson conceded 0.85 goals per game
21/22: De Gea conceded 1.43 goals per game
22/23: De Gea conceded 1.04 goals per game

This is the mistake that I see a lot of people make.

Two different groups of people are watching the games with their own eyes and coming up with two different sets of opinions. It just so happens that all the stats which cut through any kind of bias and simply look at facts (not always 100% accurate, but become more and more accurate the longer the period the stats look at) happen to agree with one of those sets of opinions and disagree with the other. Surely you understand that that makes it increasingly likely that the opinion which the stats agree with is closer to the truth?
Stats are problematic, especially for judging gk. Stats for DeGea this season are skewed because of three big defeats where the whole team underperformed. There is also the fact that we had the most clean sheets.

What made me change my mind about keeping DeGea is his mistakes in the Sevilla game especially and the second goal in the FA cup final. That combined with the blunder against Newcastle, and his lack of physical presence in the box has offset the points he saved for us this season. He folds under pressure which we cannot tolerate.

My opinion changed not because of stats but because of decisive moments where he let us down. It is also time to get a modern gk and get rid of his high wages.

Delighted for this to come off.

Although Ten Hag’s misguided belief in De Gea has come at a very expensive price, considering Onana joined Inter on a free last summer.
Ten Hag wasn't even our manager when Onana signed his contract with Inter.

Agree completely - De Gea has never been a great ball player but he has shown not being capable of handling big moments. Which is absolutely deal breaker for me as well. We need to replace asap.

Because we had no idea that our new manager, be it poch or him, would want a new goalkeeper who was good with his feet? Seems like bad planning?

It's not as if we didn't already know this club is poor at thinking ahead and planning in advance. As if they'd have took it upon themselves to sign Onana for free to replace a keeper they handed a £375k per week contract to, all without having a permanent manager in place

It's all irrelevant anyway. All that matters is we finally have a manager with some sense who wants to resolve the GK issue.

Getting ridiculous how often people are saying we could have got him for free.
Inter signed him before ten hag joined us as you've said.

There's also the fact that United would never have replaced DeGea with a keeper coming off a drugs ban.

Onana really needed this season with Inter for us to consider him again, despite previously working with Ten Hag.

DeGeas expensive £350k a week contact has also just expired, which is why we are signing a keeper now and not a year ago.

People need to consider all his and realise that's just how it is sometimes.

We would all love to make decisions with information we gain from hindsight, the club included... But unfortunately we don't have that technology yet!

Onana was quite a huge risk for Inter, as he was quite terrible for Ajax after his suspension. They were the only top club willing to take that risk and have faith in him, which has paid off massively for them.

Have a bad feeling about this guy. His handling doesn’t look very clean and while he is good with his feet, he almost looks careless in some videos.

Few errors at the start and the press will be all over him. Hopefully I am wrong.

De Gea just announced he has left so this is clearly done in the next week.

Probably signing that Japanese keeper as well

Really excited about this. If he’s as good as they say with the ball at his feet then I can’t see how anybody presses us high anymore if he can find Rashford etc in the space behind the press. We could really take the sting out of big away games with a simple keeper change

Ya tell them, that‘s exactly right. Imagine if we had been in for him, the meltdowns and moaning on here.

Just announced de gea leaving surely means we have this done??

Seeing as UTD have announced DDG is leaving or has left, this guy has to be bought so looks like deal may have already been done.?

All true

We now need to get some tweets on Onana deal being done pending a medical

Someone tell me this isn’t just ETH signing more of his mates. Serie A stats from last season look underwhelming. What can you tell me that will give me a bit of confidence?

Have you seen him play?

He will transform the way we set up and keep the ball. If you thought last season was shite at times it’s because we didn’t have a GK like him. You’re going to see a very different style of play, which won’t involve our GK having to make world class saves every match because he keeps giving the ball away.

Most of those videos are from his Ajax days, surely he has improved since? Managed well in the CL, I’m not (overly) worried from the little I have seen.

No doubt he's improved.

I'm talking more about his style and his nonchalance. He appears to take it a step further than the other ball-playing keepers we see. Obviously, I'm willing to give him a chance, but can't say I'm all that enthused by the signing. A lot of that is ignorance as I haven't seen that much of him, to be fair.

It'll be interesting. He's a big risk taker. Which traditionally was not something you wanted from a keeper, you just wanted them to claim their crosses, handle set pieces and stop the ball going in the net.

But in current football, it actually is. Most top keepers are now brave. It's not so much outfield and keeper now, it is really one cohesive thing in the buildup and that's where hopefully this risk pays off. If he can show those skills that even Pep praised and do the rest of his job to an acceptable standard it will be quite a big move for us as we move away from a very traditional style keeper.

The only slight worry is he does seem to believe his own press a bit. Hopefully he knows when to stick and when to twist more than he does in some of those older videos in Holland. In theory you'd like to think he's developed.

I can see Martinez getting at least two catastrophic groin injuries a season from sliding into the post trying to clear a goalbound effort after Onana has been rounded by the striker 50 yards from goal.
But maybe Onana will also manage to get one on one with opposing goalkeeper a few times - he will then compensate with a couple of goals scored :)
