The way some people talk about the PL as the biggest, strongest, fastest league in the world, you'd think that peasants were being picked up and thrown into the Colloseum. The level of hyperbole is unreal.

It's not even the most pressing league in Europe, so let's not worry about Onana shitting his pants at PL teams pressing him.

It's not even the tallest league in Europe (Netherlands, a place he's thrived in is), so let's not worry about Onana suddenly finding himself contesting duels with Goliaths.

And even if the league is more intense, it's not to the degree that people tend to exaggerate.

Year after year after year, PL unproven foreign players routinely hit the ground running for their respective teams without any real period of adjustment.

They're professional athletes, not semi-professional electricians.

He recently faced one of the best pressing teams in the league/world and had no issues. But yeah, he will shat in his pants by playing against Fulham, Wolves and Everton and their master pressing.

But... But.... Physical, fast, strong. Like, so so fast. Barry Allen with the suit fast.

It's some upgrade to go from De Gea to this guy in terms of a confident ball playing GK. Can't wait to see how it improves our build up play.

I personally think he will be a massive hit!

Big personality, gregarious, plays with a smile in his face - courageous, brave, decisive and a good keeper to boot.

He'll make people forget about De Gea in 3-months

Sounds like you are cherry picking which things to look at, stats and eye test often indicate very different things.

If you compare stats in different leagues or time periods for the same gk, you get huge discrepancies.

The eye test tells me he was a good shot stopper last season until the last two months where he made a couple of horrendous mistakes.

If he was a bad shot stopper he would not have gotten golden glove. With more than eight different cb pairings this season that would have been impossible.
Your probably right, stats suggest his shot stopping is on the decline though.

But let's say he's the greatest shot stopper in the world.
The other glaring holes in his game directly contribute to our lack of control of games, games where we desperately needed more possession and he would pass it straight back with the slightest pressure on him.

It keeps getting repeated, but it's true, the game has moved on to the point where DeGea can't get away with his terrible footballing ability.

Every team now press like maniacs, and if your goalkeeper deals with this by hoofing it straight to the opposition, then your going to spend alot of the game on the back foot.

Is he our only problem?
Absolutely NOT.
But possession football starts at the back in the modern game.

This is honestly not as anxiety inducing as watching De Gea and Maguire try to play it out from the back
Absolutely this.
It was at the point I would physically tense up when it was played back to DeGea and he had runners on him.

Ten Hag wasn't even our manager when Onana signed his contract with Inter.
Fair enough. More damning of the club then to not be proactive in moving on from obvious deadwood at a more financially opportune time.

Yeah but sure the club was an utter mess until ten Hag took over so that’s hardly surprising

We tolerated mistake after mistake from DDG for 5 years. I think from all PL clubs, we have the most mistake tolerant fanbase. I think Onana will be more than fine here.
There’s a difference between a goal keeping error and a blunder from what some people will describ as faffing about.
All I’m saying is Onana will make those mistakes as Allison and Ederson especially do. Our fans need to be ready for that.

Inter must be loving this to bits. Picked him up on a free last season (where was our knucklehead transfer guru) and selling him for 50-60 million barely a year later. All profit in their coffers

We knew De Gea's time was coming to a close, and Onana was the starting keeper for ETH at Ajax. Couldn't someone put two and two together last year, or is it too much to expect any forward fücking thinking from our knucklehead transfer gurus.

Agree completely. On his passing ability: he did improve on it this season, but it is not enough. His sweeping and cross claiming are almost non-existent.

Good we moved on.

He did not want to go here and we did not want him. He came off a suspension and was in terrible form.

Can anyone provide any save or shot stopping and also distribution stats between onana vs ddg? I'm curious

He had a respectible clean sheet record while at Ajax. Granted that is also due to the defense but it's something to make note of.

We will have our very own ‘Monk’ from Mean machine this year boys. At least two mini heart attacks per game watching him.

Transfer agreed before ETH took charge of United so wasn’t on the radar for us. Would’ve been better getting him for free but here we are.

Funny you mention knuckleheads eh...

De gea will never be forgotten. He goes down as a legend at our club. We signed him as a young lad and he grew into a man here. He needs to be respected. Although I agree with your first line… Onana will be a hit and improve our style of play.

It's very worrying to me how much he continually parries the ball back into the danger area instead of either holding onto it or clearing it.

Opposing strikers are going to totally capitalize on that

Feck me, can people get thread banned for moaning why we didn’t get him on a free. It’s been explained 50 times at least.

To be fair, it's been explained why Ten Hag didn't get him on a free, but the club still missed a trick. Asking why we're signing him for so much when Inter got him for free only a year ago is a legitimate question.

Well I'd reckon if Onana the 3rd man in defense up the field, then our fullbacks can tuck in into midfield position alongside Casemiro and help maintain ball possession.

With that settled, Mount and Bruno can lurk on the final third more effectively and our wingers will essentially becomes the striker.

This is exciting.

You want to sign somebody fresh off of a 1 years drugs ban?
Where’s the missed trick?

What does this mean? Wait one year for the drugs to clear his system?
No, he had a long time out from football and displayed attitude problems by falling out with Ajax at the same time. I remember him being dropped by Ten Hag for the CL second round tie that they lost.
To sign him after that would have been madness and to say otherwise is using a stupid amount of hindsight.
