Hopefully all wrapped up next week.

We're replacing De Gea 5 years too late, but it feels great to finally be moving on to a keeper who isn't shit scared of stepping off his line

Not a fan. The bloke is a bit of a clown. The Barthez comparisons are apt.

If we’re buying a keeper from Milano it has to be Maignan.

Having a more commanding and dynamic keeper with a bit of personality will transform our play. Character is very important in football and this guy has tons of it.

That’s fine and everything but only as long as we get a striker in who can actually finish the chances created by this new build up play.

The little I have seen from him does not convince that it is a good idea to let de Gea go for free and pay 50 Mio for him.
With the fee for Mount this means over 100 Mio and it does not feel as if this improves us significantly.

Our biggest issue was creating chances and scoring and I cannot see how these 2 solve that problem.

Will be interesting to see what it's like having an intelligent, calm under pressure, keeper for the first time in a while. I bet it's nice.
I’m actually excited at the thought of teams pressing us and us evading the press with the likes of Onana and Martinez. Previously it was absolutely terrifying seeing any team press De Gea, Maguire and Lindelof.

Your search history will be interesting after you googled the spelling of that.

On a general note: If we are thinking of spending that much on Onana wouldn’t Costa be a similar price, I don’t remember his release clause.
He has a 75m release clause

Well obviously we need a striker aswell. I'm not suggesting a new GK alone is enough.

I agree we do have a finishing problem but we don't have a problem creating chances once we can get the ball up to those creative players. Which is our biggest problem against the better teams. That's something Onana will help with to an extent.

Big big disagree with this. I think our creation is massively lacking. It's not the thread for it, but I'm surprised to see anyone happy with how our attacking players provide, it's nowhere near enough.

Have you not read Peps comments about Onana? “Press resistant and very very good with his feet”.

I bet we will get lots of heart-in-mouth moments too. Lots of ''WTH are you doing?'' ''Just boot it to Row Z FFS!''
We've literally been having that with De Gea, but without any of the positives that Onana will undoubtedly bring. It will make games a lot more exciting anyway and isn't that why we're watching football in the first place?

You don't see how Chelsea's overall top chance creater over the past few seasons helps us? Nor a keeper who literally starts attacks from the back with his intelligent use of the ball.

In the league Onana had more saves, a better save percentage, better GA/90' while playing many more matches.

He also held 4 clean sheets in 4 appearences against Maignan's team head to head in all competitions last season.

Maignan is quality but there isn't necessarily some large gap between them

Well he’s not going to say “oh, Onana, he’s a bit of a clown and like Barthez”.
Pep usually keeps his disingenous praise for prior to matches, not after. He went out of his way to praise him after winning the biggest prize.

Agree. If Dave's shotstopping abilities are off then he becomes a liability simply because he doesn't bring enuf of what ETH needs.

Hopefully onana isn't a reincarnated Barthez unless he starts to kiss the top of Licha's head.

Either way we will have to readjust our expectations of a united goalie with onana.

Mount massively helps, as well as having a goalkeeper who isn’t going to give away possession 50% of the time. Everyone should be able to step further forward and press higher, which ultimately means more chances too.

The counter from that is that we definitely need more production from the right.

And our second biggest issue was having a keeper that panics on the ball and hoofs the ball up the field when it's not needed, giving up the ball. Onana will definitely improve us.

We've all heard how good he is with his feet and buzzword of the summer 'press resistant' seems to apply to him, but how good is he actually in net?

How good is he at commanding his area and organising the defence in front of him, is he vocal. The things other than kicking DDG couldn't do

are we the only club that agrees personal terms with players before agreeing a fee with the club? I use to think a bid would have to be accepted and then you talk to the player.

Its reported that way quite often with bigger clubs

Bruno created more chances AND more big chances than any other player in the league last season.

If you look into how they calculate “big chances” you’ll see it’s a sham of a stat because there is no real way to define quality of the chance and all they are doing is using historical Data. We do struggle to create quality chances as a team and maybe a new proactive keeper might help push us higher up the pitch or create more space by his ability to invite preasure on himself and find a pass out.

But the midfield and forwards need to provide better options or it’s all for not, because if he’s got no one to pass to then he’s quickly going to become a calamity.

No it’s not. It’s actually a decent measure of how creative a player is.

Otherwise if you just base it on the fact of how many assists a player has got when feeding Weghorst, then that is a complete sham of an assessment.

If it is out of this guy or Costa then I would take Costa as he is younger and from the clips I have seen he looks to be a better Goalkeeper so if the price difference is not that great then that would be my choice.

Same but Onana has more experience, 27 isn't old for a GK

Good luck getting Maignan from Milan.

Onana is a big upgrade on De Gea. Statically over the last 365 days he beats him in every department.

I feel that Costa looks like he has the passing game but he is a better keeper and has composure whereas I get Eric Bailly vibes from Onana.

Hmm. Any specific reason?

More clean sheets?
Because De Gea won the golden glove, that stat is now a team stat, rather than an individual one.

Can't be seen to give praise to our players now.

Will take a while to get used to a keeper coming off his line for set pieces and claiming crosses. Think that will confuse a lot of United fans who have been brought up on Dave's unique brand of goalkeeping.
