I don't know, the next one doesn't have a host or a date and it's due to take place in 2025 :nervous:

I believe he retired from International football, that could change though I guess

he’d be our first African keeper wouldn’t he?

I dont think there have been many African goalkeepers at big clubs in general. Mendy did well for Chelsea for a while but besides that i cant think of many African goalkeepers at big clubs.

The whole narrative the journos are running is completely baffling. Why would we “wait to see what happens” with de gea before going for Onana? Both are completely different types of Goalkeepers, one fitting in to the system of our manager, the other doesn’t.

You simply go for Onana regardless of De Gea staying or not and tell De Gea that he is being replaced as number one. Then it’s up to him if he stays or leaves.

Yes. And we didn’t have many African players in general - only Bailly, Amad, Zaha, Mejbri, Djemba Djemba, Diuff, Fortune, Ighalo and Manucho come to mind (and Manucho only played for the team once I think)

Cameroon in particular has a long tradition of excellent goalkeepers - mostly as far as European football's concerned they've played in Spain and France, IIRC. The likes of:

Thomas Nkono
Jojo Belle
Carlos Kameni

Also shout out to Vincent Enyeama - think he nearly took the Ligue 1 record for most minutes without conceding a goal when he had that one great season at Lille.

But true, most never made it to a 'top' European club. They tended to do big things in international football and then be recognised as great keepers for mid-table sides.

EDIT: Just googling and realised I forgot Songo'o, another Cameroonian, who was GK and key player for Deportivo when they won La Liga in '97. Definitely one of the best keepers around for the peak of his career.

If we need to sell first, we may as well strap in for a year or so

FFS this is literally mentioned every other page. He had already agreed a pre contract with Inter before ETH joined United.

So? The club didnt think he was worth signing? ETH cant ask for things before joining?

Its very bad planning any way you bend over backwards with mental gymnastics to have a player available for free and then the season later sign him for £50 million+

I understand what you're saying, but let's take a look at other examples.
Like Kim Min Jae, when was the last time a we have a centerback from Asian country who can be considered world class? He was the first and nobody brings up that Asia never produce world class centerback. And nobody would have any objection if United bought him.
Football becoming more global in the last 20 years and stereotypes are becoming more meaningless everyday.
You should read Soccernomics. Goes over this pretty well as there are always biases at play, it wasn't long ago that in England, being a black would be a weakness in being a defender as they "lacked concentration". On the other hand there's plenty of positive biases as well - South American players deemed more cultured and skillful. Ultimately, in the age of data and gaining competitive advantage for least amount of investment, we'll see a lot of these biases be smashed to pieces. There's a long way to go, but the more people like yourself become self aware about biases, the more likely stereotypes will be dispelled.
What you choose to believe and what you are told to believe is the difference between the perpetuation of said stereotype (read bigotry), or eradication of it.

All fair points, and most definitely true.

@reelworld Football has done a good job of removing stereotypes or labelling/putting people in certain boxes. I still think there remains some to be eradicated. For example, just recently, Zidane Iqbal was let go due to Man Utd feeling he wasn't physically able to cope with the PL. Most likely it has nothing to do with his background but, simply due to the individual not having the physical attributes or being a late developer. There will still remain an element though, of the opinion that South Asians struggle physically at top level football. That's why I was a bit gutted when he left, as I was really hoping he'd break the mould.

@Lash our own Rio had this stigma. Fair enough, early on he certainly had lapses in concentration but in his peak and later years I always felt pundits/media rated Terry over him due to this pre-conceived bias.

@Kaizane Agreed. I was being honest enough to admit that I had this subconscious bias due to what I've grown up with or been led to believe by the so called experts. Good to be proven wrong.

Look if De Gea goes like we all expect, we are going to sign this fella. They'll try and stir up a drama, but going by who is reporting our interest at this point, seems on the cards to me.

I think Stoney has it backwards there. We are letting De Gea walk on a free....today. Heaton is not our No.1. Onana (or a GK) will almost certainly be the priority signing now. We aint going on tour with Heaton in goal.

DDG leaving makes the striker signing a more difficult prospect, not the GK.

Stone’s on ket if he thinks we’ve let de Gea go and don’t have money to replace him.

You're the one doing mental gymnastics my friend.

Who is to say United didn't enquire, I'm pretty sure multiple clubs will have done, but at the time DDG didn't look set to be going anywhere and Onana likely didn't want to potentially be on the bench at any point.

The mental gymnastic is even more impressive when you consider the idea that Onana had reportedly agreed to join Inter weeks before Ole was even sacked. How can anyone suggest that United should have signed a player for a manager that hadn't interviewed for a position that wasn't opened yet?

DeGea has 1 day left on contract. It’s obvious to a blind man that he’s leaving

Exactly. For a change stoney has it wrong I think. And I think this is his opinion as opposed to information.

Because you either aren't capable or can't be bothered, here it is again for you. The agreements were well in place with Inter and Onana far in advance of EtH's name even being mentioned in rumours to come to us, it was signed off officially in January of 2022.
