Ander Herrera is a Manchester United Player!

Looks to me like the 'last stand'. Admirable in a way but still makes them look like arses. I hope in event of any future games between the club we make our hospitality lounges and two star al-dente spaghetti off limits to their dignitaries.

You have to laugh really, after years of not buying a midfielder, of course we'll struggle because the other team are a bunch of immature kids. Don't think there's much they can do about it, hopefully we still confirm it by tomorrow.

It will be done by Monday anyway as his clause jumps by 20% after then.

I think people are panicking for nothing and having a go at Woodward for something that's not his fault.

It seem Bilbao rejected a bid from us earlier this week and since then we've gone the player buy out way. So I expect a deal to be announced tomorrow most likely. I'd say we're probably not very impressed with Bilbao's public disclosure and behavior.

From sources James cooper has been saying, the rejected bid was to save Bilbao face value, they do not want people to think they are happy to see their best players going. So expect the transfer to go ahead, it's only the 26th of June, so plenty of time

Because they are not acting like a pub team on Twitter. The transfer is going through no matter what, there is nothing Bilbao can do to stop that - they are just being a massive pain in the ass for the sake of it. We have probably set the wheels in motion with the Spanish FA - which is why we have probably taken him to Carrington and Bilbao has feck all of a say in it.
it dosnt matter if we have set the wheels in motion or not, thier is obviously no agreement in place as of yet. What ever way you look at it or spin it, having another player at your training ground without an agreement with the club(whether that be directly with the club or via the Spanish FA) is not a professional way to act.

compared to that a tweet is nothing.

i sincerely hope that herrera at carrigton was a media fabrication(in which case yes bilbao are acting unprofessionally) but if he was thier that is very unprofessional

So, you go down the buy-out route and get the player, costing more money in taxes etc. Then the other party come out and say they would of just accepted the bid had you made it. Your telling me thats not dumb?

That's not wise but i won't call it dumb or stupid. That's condescending and a good lawyer should never be condescending.

They do not negotiate with teams. Their stance is pay the clause or nothing.

Irrelevant, you have to make the bid because no matter what anyone says, they will. Your telling me if somebody bids 200m for some unknown player who never gets a game for the club they would reject it in favour of them getting a nominal amount for the players buy out? Like bollocks they would and you'd have to be pretty thick headed to think so. Its the same with every player for every club, there is always a point, always an amount that will be accepted, whether your talking to bilbao or real madrid or colchester.

Well this one got weird since I last checked in last night...

This has to be the first time a club has started trolling over a transfer. I'm really starting to feel for woody. He just can't catch a break!
Well it does kind of make sense... No club wants to see their player leave, and their fans certainly don't. It's obvious that they value Herrera and don't want him to leave, but they can't escape a release clause.

They're doing exactly what we did about Ronaldo 2008/09. We publically come out and said we will not sell to Madrid at all, and we have no intentions of selling to Madrid. All the while, it appears a deal had been agreed in 2008 for him to sign in the summer of 2009, or atleast some form of pre-agreement. It's purely done to satisfy the fans, even if they know exactly whats going to happen anyway. If the club was to sit back and do nothing/say nothing, then i'm sure their fans would get pretty annoyed, rather quickly. Saying they rejected United's bid is probably just them saying "We did try to keep him... honestly"

Does strike me as a PR face saver from Bilbao.

Signing players from Bilbao is tough business - regardless of previous incompetence shown by the likes of Woodward before. This time it genuinely sounds as though the complications are coming from Spain only.

I have said multiple times they made a bid which was purely a formality, nothing more.

Indeed.

"We wouldn't sell that lot a virus"

Wasn't Javi Martinez at Bayerns training ground before Bilbao agreed to the deal?

Bayern didn't pay income tax on the Martinez transfer and someone said only one club has had to pay the income tax on a tranfer in last 10 years.I think it is extremely unlikely we will have pay the tax.
They did it through lawyers, hence arguing that the player didn't touch the money and therefore not income tax liable. Or something to that effect.

How do they manage this with EU law, etc? Doesn't it fall foul of discrimination/restricted trade and stuff?
No idea. I think it's not a written rule. It's an unwritten "tradition". So no black and white.

Unless im mistaken, its against the law to have a player fly to another club and do a medical etc etc without the permission from his team?

Athleti just saving face for the announcement from us later...
IINM, the player buying out his contract is already breaching his contract. Hence paying compensation in the form of the buy out.

I'm one of those who never believes a deal is done until it has been officially announced, with a picture of the player holding up his new Man Utd jersey.
John Obi Mikel ring any bells? :p

mo money..... mo problems

still think this will go through - poor Ander will have to spend another night at Woodys

I don't think I'll ever understand how these buy-out clauses can be so complicated. It should be really straight-forward: Pay this amount of money and we can't say no.

I think it is that. But there's no "We can't wibble our tits about to get attention on protest" clause though, therein lies the problem.

What on earth are you talking about? who said anything about a lawyer?

The complications are legals, the buy out clause is not a complicated thing in itself, the problem is that you have to deal with something unfamiliar. If the lawyers think that they can deal with the buy out clause and the LFP requirements quickly, than the 2nd option is not a problem. Therefore not stupid

It's just business. If Bilbao aren't willing to bend and meet us halfway then so be it.

They have an unorthodox set up and whack massive buy out clauses on to their players, plus they don't really need to sell. They're relying on emotional blackmail of their homegrown players to a degree. So to criticise us for trying to get around that isn't really fair.

Bilbao are really horrible to deal with. It's not like we're ripping them off - we are paying a very inflated price for Herrera already yet they still want to make lives difficult for United.

After Llorente, Martinez and now Herrara, I would think talented players would think twice before signing for them, as getting away seems to be a nightmare.

I'm not saying I agree with the EU, but the law applies whatever the business. It's discriminatory under EU law I would have thought.

It is discriminatory no doubt, but how do you go and apply the law in the football business? Force them to have a quota of foreign players? Would you do that to every club? A company may be be sued if applying workers feel they've been discriminated on that basis, but in sports things don't work that way.

In regards to the "restricted trade" people aren't commodities, you probably mean freedom of movement, and in that regard the Bosman ruling applies - when his contract ends.

it nothing to do with meeting us halfway he is thier player.

we have to meet thier terms before we can buy him, once we have met those terms, if via lawyers or an agreement with bilbao, then we take him to carrington, not before

Didn't Adem Ljajic also stand with Tosic holding a Manchester United shirt alongside Sir Alex only for him to never actually sign for us?

I do think the Herrera deal will happen soon, either later today, or tomorrow. It's only a matter of time in my opinion
