Here we fecking go again. I refuse to be drawn in. According to the media we've signed the Bundesliga + the Dutch squad + Pogba + Vidal + Uncle Tom and Jerry. I'll only believe if I see him holding the shirt or signing the contract.

I'd have this guy and one other behind Mata as the forward point. I'd be happy if the other was Strootman, or someone of that ilk. If you have two defensively solid midfielders you don't need an out and out spoiler.

I would not write totally write carrick off, the likes of cleverly and fletcher I would put huge question marks over, and with fellaini's effective world cup, I can see LVG wanting to use him in some shape and fashion. LVG loves to be a game changer with his bench, so I could see him using fellaini and hernandez has super subs

The reported wages are very low at 50k a week... Surely makes up for the high fee

Don't know much about him tbh, is he a CM and can he play as some kind of DMF? Which are his best qualities? Will he improve us?
Stupid question any decent player could improve our midfield. :)

Strange thought process really. ~£29m is too much for a Herrera but you'd happily see us pay ~£45m for a less experienced, less proven, less all-round midfielder?
I'm happy we are finally sorting out the midfield problem. I'm glad people are getting exciting but I wonder how many watch him regularly?
Bebe looked good on you tube:lol: I'm just on the fence about him. He's never played in the premier league and I don't remember him being in the Champions league, it's a lot of money. You would have to have the blinkers on to not rate Barkley, he's one of the top talents in Europe right now. Ross Barkley is very much an all round midfielder. Herrera is obviously a player with huge potential and can get better. I just find it funny how many seem to be an expert from you tube. He looked good when we played them in the Europa league, I hope he's a success.

Yeah his passing and rythm are a couple of notches below Alonso. But then he has a higher work-rate and final 3rd ability. More of an Arteta + Ramsey (without the ridiculous goalscoring rate) hybrid IMO.
From what I've seen, he does seem a bit reminiscent of Ramsey by the way he carries the ball and looks for the quick exchange. Like you said, his goal-return is obviously nowhere near the level of Ramsey, but hopefully that's an area he can dramatically approve upon here.

This is BBC and Sky reporting it not bloody goal.com or newspapers. It's happening.

So assuming Herrera comes, whose place is he taking? Fletcher/Cleverley/Fellaini's or Carrick's?

Surely our midfield is a free for all now...

That's perfectly fine, it's not a crime to not be drawn in even with all of the evidence to suggest otherwise. Each to our own and all that.

Yeah but Blind can also play left back and isn't an ex-city player known for being a thug and not much more.

He's not a good left back though. De Jong's hardly known for being a thug either considering he's had 1 red card in his career and it was 7 years ago.

I watch him regularly. I think he's more than good enough. Barkley may have more drive and power in the advanced midfield position than Herrera but he does not have Herrera's decision making or positional sense in the number 8 role.

Hopefully this means we go for a pure DM, which are less attractive on the market right now, bar Bayern and Barcelona there aren't many top teams who use them and neither of those top teams went for the more physical ones. Even Gustavo who is world-class went for peanuts as it isn't too popular with a pure DM in a 4-2-3-1. He is doing great for Brazil as well and he would make our team balanced, and world-class for not much at all.

Not saying he is the best/only target for that role.

We just need players who can play in CM

All things constant, he'll probably be best partnered with a DM, so he can easily fit (best) next to Carrick/Jones/Fletcher/Fellaini.

He'll surpass Cleverley/Anderson (if we still count him)/Fletcher. So it's their spots in danger.

Either way, still hope we sell Marouane.

I'm not writing him off completely, but he's getting to an age now where he can't/shouldn't be playing every game and we're going to have to replace him at some point. No reason why he, Herrera and another can't be involved in the same squad and there be plenty of game for all three.

I think he will be our only midfield signing this transfer window, Strootman in January transfer window.

He will be a starter beside Carrick, used as box to box player. In winter we will sign Strootman who will replace MC in starting eleven.
Roll on January!

What do you mean now? It's been like that for a few years for our opponents!! :D

It does look like whoever has been leaking stuff has been 'put right' because this came a little out of the blue. All the talk has been about unrealistic targets like Pogba, Vidal, Kroos etc. and I must admit I was getting worried we were going to make a hash of this summer as well, midfield wise atleast.

I was desperate for us to sign Ander for the last few seasons. I think he's a cracking young player who maybe over the last year or so has stagnated a little in his development. I think he needed a big move last summer to take him on as a player and I think the deal falling through with us did affect his form atleast early on in the season.

However, if LVG wants him then I think there is no question we should get him. LVG is forthright in his decision making and I can't see him sanctioning the move without have a plan on how Ander will fit in.

Just out of curiosity @jojojo didn't he mostly play as a no.10 last season?

I was comparing Barclay and Herrera in both roles.

Can barclay even play in the deepline role that LVG wants from his CM players, seeing barkley he just looks like another advanced midfielder, now a top class wide player is something we could do with

Why do we need a "marquee signing"? We need players who will improve us and get us playing better. This guy does that.

I'd rather have no "marquee signings" and have players who can come and play a role designated them by the manager, play it well, and move us forward. Marquee signings are completely unnecessary, if you're signing players who will do the job they're signed for and improve the team.

Herrera suits what we need more than Barkley does. We already have about half a dozen players who play where Barkley does.

I just think we need a big signing to lift the club after last season. You are right though, he doesn't need to be a house hold(marquee) signing to be a good player. After we lost the league to City on goal difference, the RVP signing lifted the club and the players that's all. If we buy another good central midfielder I will be a lot happier. I just don't want Carrick or Cleverley lining up with him, presuming we buy him that is.
