Ander Herrera is a Manchester United Player!

kin Dutch managers, signing midfielders... this is not the Utd way!

I watch a bit, but most of what Ive seen comes from the videos ive posted, Strootman with Herrera would be almost two identical players, although I would say Strootmans passing ability and long balls are better. Whereas Herrera has better technical ability and is faster.
Coupling the two would make for a very hard to play against CM partnership and offer alot of protection for the back. Most likely with Strootman being the outball with Herrera bombing on, wed quite easily be able to overpower lower league sides and cause major problems vs the likes of Matic combined with Fabregas.
Herrera- Strootman vs Matic-Fabregas, Yaya-Fernandinho, Ramsey-Flamini, Gerrard-Henderson. Interesting.
If they were used as two box-to-box players, I guess we wouldn’t have to play a purely defensive midfielder, which is to some extent similar to how we set-up in recent years. Carrick was the closest thing to DM, but to be fair we usually paired him with someone with no defensive attributes (Scholes, Cleverley, Anderson, Fellaini…) or with Fletcher, what didn’t work out as they were too immobile.

I guess a midfield two of Strootman and Herrera could work for us pretty well.

What!? We've actually signed someone? A midfielder at that? Now I'm really confused.

So how good is this guy? What's his style of play? Are we talking hard tackling or tika taka passing and movement?

What I did hear last season though when I saw Bilbao play (Once in the Europa league) was that there was another player keeping him out of the team who the locals seemed to think was better.

I know nothing about him but I'm glad we've signed someone (Or about to sign someone).

Mix of both

This is a brilliant signing and a classic move by a club in the "elite" tier of football. We see clubs like Barca signing Alba, Rakitic, Bayern buying Javi and Thiago, Madrid getting Illarmendi all top class players with hefty fees but relatively unknown to the general football media now turned into huge players. The other night I dont think the commentators knew Rakitic had essentially replaced Fabregas at Barca but everyone will know his name next year. That is why clubs like ours are so esteemed, its not just about the big names.

Herrera will become a global superstar off the back of this signing and I cant wait to see what he can do and add to the team. Other clubs will sign the big names for the sake of the name, and we will have the occasional ones but I love this kind of signing, a hidden gem.

Why aren't any other big clubs linked if this kid is as good as so many here say?

Barcelona tried to negociate a lowered price, they failed and quitted.

I must have watched him but buggered if I can remember him. Reading about him on here (and elsewhere) he sounds like a nice combination of being neat and tidy on the ball, with a good range of passing yet strong in the tackle. Would a young Xavi Alonso be a good description?

Kind of nice really.

To be fair, it's probably not hard to impress Ferdinand in conversation.

Rio was probably impressed Herrera remembered to get to the anti-doping test to begin with.

No but I don't remember him particularly, which means he didn't stand out. Yet another reason not to rate him.

Also I have a theory that we were deliberately shit in those games.

Oh, so because you don't remember him, he didn't stand out?

highlights thorugh season is oone think but I think people can make a better judgement on a palyer seeing him in a whole match against top teams
there is also a vid how he played against barcelona and did particulay well..

he seems to have pretty everything what our CM needs, Isnt shy to tackle, aggresive, determined, and can RUN with the ball! dribbles well and has really nice vision. Havent seen much of long passes and shooting/finishing but still think he could be a starter for us right away... he also plays in 4-3-3 system in bilbao team with high pressing if Im not mistaken so he would fit easily..
hope the rumors are true...

He seems to me like a budget version of Aaron Ramsey. That’s not an insult, he can be very good for us.

Player Wikipedia pages are great when transfers are imminent:

On 24 June 2014,Manchester United were reported to be in advanced talks with Athletic on signing Herrera, reportedly agreeing to match the £28 million buyout clause in Herrera's contract after Ed Woodward got off his arse and did something besides signing commercial deals with Pharmaceutical companies. [4]

He's also made 5 million appearances for "Small Heath Alliance"

That tallies with Any Mitten's comments about him being a student of the game. Which is obviously a good thing. I'm already liking the cut of his jib!

What odds this all goes tits up though? United fans are like battered spouses. We keep thinking it won't ever happen again unti l*bosh* another punch in the guts.

He completely ran the show in both games you probably just weren't paying attention to him specifically at the time.
He's a very good and still young player, has the typical Spanish passing and composure, but is also a very hard worker and good defensively. Under LvG I'm sure he'll step his game up even further and become a truly top player, but as he is now he'll be a massive improvement to our team.

Not sure. I think Xabi Alonso has always had a slightly more considered game than Ander Herrera. Not that Xabi is adverse to running but Herrera isn't a midfielder who sets the tempo for a team like Xabi does. Maybe he could develop this ability in the future but his game is based more on buzzing about than Xabi's ever has been. Obviously, as a Spaniard, Ander will look to keep the ball when he can. However, I think Herrera makes riskier passes than Alonso and tries to take the ball forward from midfield more. Xabi's more of a metronome than Herrera is. Herrera's game is a bit more all action. When he plays in centre midfield, as opposed to in the attacking midfield slot, he's not the type who puts his foot on the ball and pings it about until an opening appears like an Alonso or a Pirlo. If there's no real opening he'll run at players and look to open things up. Herrera's kind of how Di Maria is when Carlo Ancelotti plays him in a centre midfield trio. Lots of energy, always looking to make things happen.

I watched the video and he looks good but in all honesty I'm just glad we're adding to the midfield. We can't start next season with the same midfield we had last year and expect to win anything.

Like you said though, he looks like he's all round good at everything and almost the same sort of player as Modric, doesn't score goals and doesn't get assists but generally assists the assister.

Great. He'll lead the Stewart Downing league next season.

Yeah his passing and rythm are a couple of notches below Alonso. But then he has a higher work-rate and final 3rd ability. More of an Arteta + Ramsey (without the ridiculous goalscoring rate) hybrid IMO.

Jesus. Two summers in a row now! New manager, Swansea as the first game and apparently signing Herrera. Talk about Dave ja voo

I just hope we sign somebody with him in central midfielder. I'm glad we might actually sign somebody but I hope he's not the marquee signing. I still would want Vidal or Schweinsteiger. It's a lot of money for Herrera and I'm on the fence, I hope it works out. For another 15m you couldn't have went for Barkley and he's only 20. It can only be good for Mata this signing though. I'm glad it's not been leaked badly and a long saga, maybe lessons are being learnt from last summer.
