Ander Herrera is a Manchester United Player!

It's not really an increase in his release clause though is it?
Iirc last summer it was £36m, now people are saying it will be €40m this summer?
Well, higher price than what he was supposedly available at last summer.

All paper talk but all signs point to him being more expensive this time around.

It increases to 40m in the summer. Excluding taxes.

i watched him yesterday - he works very well in their team. Don't know how he would fit in in our dysfunctional team.

His problem in Spain is that he isn't seen as a patient, passing midfielder - a Xavi or even an Alonso say. Nor as a truly creative midfielder in the Iniesta or Isco tradition. He plays more like a Spanish player with good technique, who'd like to be playing in the Premier League where Cleverley, or Anderson, or Giggs-in-the-middle plays. A bit of freedom!

However, our valuation didn't match Athletic's and he has settled into a role in their team now, so I don't see them selling him any cheaper.

@jojojo

I have a feeling that he might become our panic buy after we fail to sign any of the plethora of top stars that Moyes wants.

IIRC Herrera was willing to come on really low wages. If true this has to be taken into account as the overall transfer cost will be reduced over the five years, say in comparison to a 20m player who earns £140k a week.

Personally I feel that he would be really well suited to the Premier League.

We really need to splash the cash this summer for players like Herrera and Koke. Time for the old guard to move on, and freshen things up with proper quality. Carrick has been a great servant but he's been going downhill for a while now. He might just be part of the problem. We need a more dynamic midfield with players who can offer more in attack. Vidal would be perfect, but I really can't see us getting him.

Why do we need him when we've got Fellaini?

I still cannot believe we messed up signing Herrera. Scandalous.

I've always said that I think he's better than Koke, and I still maintain that. Both are 'British' sorts of Spanish midfielders, although Herrera is the more Spanish of the two I think. Koke has great delivery, as a lot of British midfielders do. Good long ball, great crosser. Herrera is better over 5-15 yards though I think.

Kind of agree, but as a creator Koke is the better player. Already got over 10 assists this season. You are right, his delivery is top notch, but he's able to pick some lovely through balls too. Ideally, we could go and sign both of them. Both young, and very good players who could spend their peak years at United.

If only...

...Ed Woodward looks baffled by this idea

Did he sign a contract with Bilbao after his failed move to us? If not, i do not understand why is there an increase in his release clause

Why would Koke leave a team that will be in the Champions League next season for one that (possibly) has no European football to speak of?

For all we know, he might not want to leave but with Atleti's financial situation he may well have to. De Gea might not have wanted to leave for certain, but he did because it helped the club financially and he got a move to a massive club. If Atletico accept a bid, then chances are we sign him. He'll do what's best for his club most likely.

I still think he would've solved certain problems in our midfield that Fellaini never will.

Plus I think he'd be suited for a role alongside a holding midfielder.

It's possible mate...but De Gea had the attraction of Champions League football and working with one the games most decorated and respected managers.

The only way we get him (IMO) is there is no competition for his signature from Champions League clubs.

Herrera is a slightly different issue for me, and a more likely signing.

Yeah he did have that, but then it's still more than possible. Falcao moved to Monaco, though I'm not so sure that was really up to him in the end with the dodgy 3rd parties involved in the deal. I do think we will recover from this in the end. One season out of the CL wouldn't be a disaster. We need 2 top class centre midfielders and if we go all out with proper bids rather than the mess we got ourselves into last summer then we can get the players. Barca is possible, they have had an interest in the past and with Xavi getting on a bit it's possible they will move for Koke. Atleti might want to sell him to someone outside of Spain. If we pay the clause, we will get the player/players. With de Gea and Mata here too, it would help the pair of them settle in. I might be dreaming a bit but for this team to go forward again we need to make a statement in the summer. No Fellaini type signings.

A post so funny it made me want to have a laugh wank

Mate it wasn't a joke. That's what Man Utd said in the summer remember?

'The second priority was to add a midfield player, and the capture of Fellaini has met that need'.

Just think about that for two seconds mate. Look at the words in silence and let it sink in. The club openly told the public that signing Fellaini had met our need in midfield.

In the club's eyes signing Fellaini meant Herrera was not needed...

...:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

If he's still available, and we stop feck around with valuations, I hope we return and fetch him. He's a wonderful player to watch.

He's got an all round skill set as a midfielder he can fill a variety of roles at a good level, I would say his best position is as a box to box midfielder personally. He style would do well in the English game, for the price they want their will be very few suitors.

Their philosophy really is admirable thinking that they have lost their two best players the last two season's too.

 the fudgesticks is that?

The club's response to a fan who wrote them angry about at our failures in the transfer market last summer (link). I kid you not. Someone at Man Utd really thought it would be a good idea to write this and that the fans of the club would actually buy it.

Does make you wonder doesn't it..?

Herrara was and still is the answer to our center midfield problems. Being a dynamic, deeper lying playmaker.

We had our arguments chief however I rate you as a poster and a friend. You're a sensitive person, who always find the time to respond to all posts and you're pretty knowlegable in football too. I love reading your posts since they are usually well written and void from any malice and sarcasm

However....you're pretty shit in judging CM. Fellaini, Ando, Reo Coker. I like Herrera but now that you're rating him I am kind of worried....;)

Bilbao qualifying for the Champions League (they are currently 4th) would likely complicate things further. The club would surely be even more resistant to losing one of their prized assets, and the player himself may not be keen to give up his 1st ever experience of Champions League football.

Ander. The answer? Perhaps. Many would agree. Many wouldn't. Moyes though, our esteemed manager, well, he is probably pondering a different question to the masses altogether.

Ha! :DYou should be happy it shows I'm human..:D

Besides..for every Reo Coeker there is a Fletcher ...for ever Anderson there is a Mikel and a Kroos....and for every Fellaini there is a Vidal....

As for Fellaini right now ''just you wait...." (Eliza Doolittle accent);)

It increases to 40m in the summer. Excluding taxes.

Taxes don't apply to overseas transfers. It would be 4M more than last Summer, but that's if we wait until right after the hike is activated, which would pretty damn stupid. You know, like waiting for a release clause to lapse and then paying even more. Oh wait...

Well, that's some way of addressing devilish's point. "A Mikel and a Kroos"

Ander Herrera was flattered by interest from Manchester United, but he sees his long-term future at Athletic Bilbao.

United spent much of last summer chasing creative talent in the middle of the park.

Herrera was identified as a top target, but David Moyes failed to meet his release clause before the deadline passed.

The Red Devils boss was reported to have watched the 24-year-old again ahead of the winter window, but again no deal was done.

Herrera now considers the subject to be closed, with there no desire on his part to leave his home-town club.

He told El Confidencial: "I made it clear at the time.

"I am grateful to United for their interest and to Athletic for considering me to be more valuable than money.

"Athletic have made it clear that they have no intention of selling.

"We are a solid club with a good economic standing. We are privileged.

"We are stable financially, well respected, have a new stadium and a great team - no Athletic players want to leave."

How has Herrera been doing this term La Liga fans?

Very well. Has been linked to Liverpool recently and he would be absolute quality for them, more so than us even I reckon. Would be an upgrade on the role Henderson does for them now.

£37m is a lot, and Bilbao are fecking awful to do deals with (Llorente+Rube, Bayern+Martinez, Us+Herrera) but I'd really like him. His defensively disciplined enough for the league and definitely has the creativity needed to play beside someone like Carvalho.

Some speculation here. Release clause supposed to go up to £37M in July.

So it's taken Moyes a year to decide Ander is good enough? Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction...

Why would Ander leave Bilbao now anyway? We f'd him about last summer, Bilbao are locked on for the Champions league and after his recent assist and volley he's a hero again. Why, as a Basque, would he want to stick his neck out for us again?
