Except that was exactly where he played in his impressive performances earlier in the season.

He's just not top quality if we have intentions of climbing back to the top of the league and further. It's as simple as that.

Andre Herrera is a good player to have in squad but going forward he won't be more than rotational player used to rest first teamers playing lesser games or used for certain games for tactical reasons .

Herrera is my soul mate.

Back in the early days of my rugby playing career, I started playing as a flanker. My coach told me that if I'd had a good game he probably wouldn't have noticed me for the entire 80 minutes. Basically I was expected to get stuck in and do the dirty work for the team's glory boys.

I would tackle, win the ball back and then slip it to the attacking players as quickly as possible. Harrying, linking up play and getting in the opposition's face was my role.

Herrera' role in Mourinho's team seems pretty much the same and I think he does it exceptionally well. It takes drive, fitness and team spirit, all of which Herrera has by the bucket load.

I mentioned Rooney, Mhki was awful, Ibra couldn't hit the target and that is his job. The forwards were worse than the midfield because they were getting chances and did not do their job, which is scoring goals. Smalling is scary. Carrick has not been good for a while, but obviously him and Pogba not playing well is all Herrera's fault.

To be fair that's exactly the logic used to beat everyone else. Lingard, Fellaini, Rooney for instance. Why would this be different?

He needs to be more creative. Carrick had 2 excellent passes in that first half that split open hull. Herrera should be making those too.

He played a lovely chipped ball over the Hull defence to Miki in the box within the first 2 minutes of the game.

It's like some people don't even watch the game. It's quite the opposite, when we are struggling, he's the one that steps up, every bloody time.

And his lack of passing is always leveled at him despite him pulling off two or three great passes a match, it's like you literally don't watch him.

Hey Ivaldo, I do watch him I have a season ticket and I think he's decent enough to warrant a squad place easily. He has good points like the way he has mastered a trick on his first touch that is a joy to watch and his short passing game is good. He also has plenty energy and makes good interceptions through this. But if you are going to tell me his range or choice of passing is good then I give up. Plus since I have given you some of his good points he has quite a few limitations in his game also. Like lack of leadership (goes missing when chips are down), as I mentioned passing range, choice of passing, decision making (give poor free kicks away, stupid shooting every match) but hey just my honest opinion on him.

Really? It's quite the opposite. He's the one who gets the team going again. He puts in those extra miles, he's the one barking orders. You don't have to look far to find evidence of it either. I remember watching the Spurs game where he's ordering Pogba and like around, getting them to get in position before resting. Hes the biggest leader out there for us right now.

He's a risk taker in his passing. I'll never claim he's the best passer but he has been infinitely more dangerous than say, Carrick has been over the last month or so. He's having to force his passing because the supposed better passers aren't cutting in. We know where economical passing gets us, it's 0-0s against Hull.

His shooting is shit I'll give you that! You're expecting things from him that hes not there to produce, he's a ball winner and someone who can inject pace into our play, would you expect passing range from the likes of Kante for example? It's an asset that hes got the occasional killer pass in him, it shouldn't be a prerequisite of someone who plays his position to be Pogba on the ball however.

And then the first time pass to Valencia over the top that lead to a chance.

we should replace everyone incl. Pogba apart the rightback then..
Also we won't get top players until we are a top club again. One leads to the other. A lot of the so called better players, say Sanchez came here as a Barca reject, a lot weren't fighting off clubs for their signatures. Then Ibra who is coming towards the end of his career and fancied a shot at the PL. If Ronaldo had not come here and was at Madrid age say 26-27 he wouldn't come to us. We were so fortunate that we got him as a kid and got some good years out of him. Gundogan is injury prone as it has proved. A lot of younger ones are coming good, but their clubs better not kid themselves that if Barca or Real come calling they won't be off. The PL is either a stepping stone for top players or a last stop, last big payday.

I think there are a few who are completely misunderstanding his role in the team. He is the grafter while Carrick and Pogba are supposed to bring the finesse. He is doing his job, pity others aren't.

It was an excellent pass too but Carrick made more excellent passes in first half than Herrera in 90 minutes.

Yup. The thing is he's also got technical ability which many in his mold do not have. That ability on the ball of course is not to the standard of playmakers like Pogba, but it's what he seems to be measured by, not his primary strengths which he is in the team for.

The fact that we don't have cover for Carrick is causing a problem. When he is on form and Herrera and Pogba play in their correct positions the team tick. The fact that Carrick doesn't always play or like last match is removed disrupts everything. Herrera has to drop back and is not in the same position to dictate the pace. Pogba tries too hard to justify his cost, which is actually not his to worry about and takes too many touches. It slows everything down. Also that left side is wrong. If Martial plays it is better, but the link up with the LB quite often spoils it.

Herrera IMO features in our top 3 players this season, rather he'd be among the 2 players who'd feature in every fan's top 3 players list, the other being Valencia. There is no point of replacing him when he's been this good over the course of the season, he himself would feel hard done by after putting in these level of performances. There is no point thinking of replacing him when we have bigger issues elsewhere- replacing Carrick and Ibra, getting LB sorted at the very least, possibly getting a CB if Jones' injury struggle continues and/or Rojo turns back to his usual self, buying a backup for Tony V.
Herrera's loss of form was expected especially after the amount of distance he was covering and after a packed December, he was bound to be fatigued, which is all he is suffering. Despite this, the passion and determination he brings to our side along with a certain awareness of situations around him and technical ability of course make him among the first names in the team sheet in my view.
Sure his passing range is limited, he isn't the cleanest shooter of the ball, but his short passing is possibly as good as anyone in our side, he makes one of the most no. of recoveries and interceptions. He's made 3rd most no. of interceptions in the league per 90 mins among players with 10 or more appearances (2nd most in absolute no. terms), 4th most no. of passes in the league per 90 mins (among players with more than 10 appearances) .
He isn't in the team for being the creative CM, he is there to do the dirty work which he does very well. Judge him on those grounds rather than the creative aspects of the game

I've seen a lot of posters defend both Herrera and Valencia as the best players this season, and yet not understand what that says about our team currently.

Bet you would love us to sign Kante though....

And this too. It should not be surprising that anyone would rather have Kante. He bossed the midfield for Leicester last year, so much so that they won the title and are now fighting relegation. And now he's bossing it for the team flying away with the league.

So how could it be stupid to suggest Kante is the better or more influential player?

We missed on Kante so it's going to have to be someone else now.

Exactly. Plus he can chip in with the odd assist. People have a problem with him when he tries the extravagant stuff. Long range passes et al and his shooting but in saying that it ismt as bad as people make out to be. He scored a fair few in his time here, tidyly struck shots. More the decision to take the strike on is his downfall.

In his last few games he has tried more long range passes and shots from distance (out of desperation and hope more than anything else) which has exagerrated peoples perceptions of him. He is still doing his job well.

Herrera often plays well in the first half but then fizzles out and is completely ineffective in the 2nd half of games. Anyone else notice this?
Also his fouls in dangerous positions are infuriating.

This also is never mentioned. Always looking to get something going. One twos, taking players out of the game. Moving their midfield around. Never mentioned but so important nonetheless

Surprising as Kante isnt reknowned for his passing or goal scoring either. Is that not your problem with Herrera?

In which world is Herrera a risk taker with his passing. Majority of his passes are to Valencia or back to defence. When he does try something more adventurous he mostly fails.

It's a question they won't answer. Kante isn't expected to do these things, but Herrera is for some reason.

Then they will tell you he's much better defensively. Then you show them the comparative stats that illustrate Herrera providing far more defensively to the team, that in a team who keeps the ball better than Chelsea and therefore have less defending to do.

When I watch games Kante simply has a greater effect and overall contribution. I'm not looking at stats because stats don't tell near the whole story. He has a massive effect on most if not all games he plays in the PL. And that includes a freaking PL title run with Leicester. Herrera is several levels below him in that regard.

If Herrera was on or near his level, my guess is we would be playing with 2 in the midfield a lot more often, considering our lack of goals. But that's not the case, is it?

Kante's contribution is clear, pal. Back to back titles as the engine in the midfield. You can have your stats.

Had we been half as clinical as Chelsea in goalscoring, we'd be near the top of the table, maybe leading them or trailing them by 1-2 points at most. (We've deserved to win every drawn game except pool away and maybe WHU but I can't seem to recall that game completely). Had that been the case, no one would be questioning his goalscoring ability. We'd be saying Herrera has been more influential for us this season than Kante was for Leicester last year. He's just getting all this criticismfrom a certain section because our attackers fail to finish off chances!

It's an amazing achievement. How does that have anything to do with his limitation? Herrera is criticised for his lack of distribution, Kante is not. It's very simple.

If you can't work out what Herrera contributes to the team then give up.

If Herrera was as good as Kante, would we be playing with 3 in midfield? Or would we be taking Carrick away so that we can play with as much firepower as possible in attack? Herrera can pick a pass, probably even better than Kante, but that doesn't change my question.

Or forget Kante for a second. If he was as good as Wanyama or Fernandinho (when not suspended) would we be playing with 3 in the middle?

Would be a great example of Kante didn't have another defensive midfielder in Matic playing next to him!

Or that they have 3 at the back. Baffling how Herrera still doesn't get the credit he deserves for us.

Continues to be the most underappreciated player in our squad. Is always closing down, winning the ball back in the middle of the park and letting those around him perform.

He isn't going to play Iniesta defence splitting passes, that's not his game and never will be consistently.

United played 2 in midfield plenty of times earlier in the season and the only player who partnered Pogba and was effective in that role was Herrera.

United don't play 2 in central midfield because of Pogba, not Herrera.

I partly disagree. I believe we moved away from 2 in central midfield also related to the CB department. 1. Blind & Bailly at the beginning of the season was well and all in passing and building up (not require Carrick role), but lack physicality meant Fellaini would be preferred; that in turn made our midfield worse at ball playing/ lack creativity/ static/ predictable with Fellaini most of the time tried to lay off the ball to other players. 2. Then Smalling back in to partner Bailly which means we were physical capable at the back, but Smalling and Fellaini can't build up play well. And Herrera started to get more game time. This doesn't really work well since Bailly despite being comfortable with the ball, his decision making with his passing is erratic & inconsistent, so we considered Carrick. Then the attacker positions were not doing too well also adding to the decision. 3. Now we had RoJones who struck a great partnership and quite capable building from the back so we likely less rely on Carrick in certain games. The problem now is with Pogba having poor form and we still can't solve some of the the attacking positions.

Have many claimed this though? Kante has arguably been the best player in Leicester's surprise title win and has been pretty impressive for Chelsea who look to be running away with the title this season. What I've seen is people comparing both of them via stats, to simply highlight the extent of Herrera's defensive work, with the implication being that Kante is the defensive benchmark for the league etc. Don't think many have said Herrera is better than Kante or something along those lines.
