Amazing."What does Ander do?"
Amazing."What does Ander do?"
After being benched almost the whole season under LvG I'm so happy for him! What a wonderful display yesterday and a great season for a lad with a huge heart!
Indeed! Deserved a proper chance and a few consecutive games. There's something similar in Ander and Evra.
Yep, that's the thing. He tried to acquire pieces for his Dutch World Cup setup and it didn't really pan out. Then we stumbled upon the 4-3-3 - which worked fairly well and got the best out of a lot of players at his disposal, but instead of being pragmatic and building upon it, he thought better to rip it apart and build a 4-2-3-1 - even though it didn't suit a lot of our players in terms of them being good fits for it. For reference, Carrick was already showing signs of being suspect in a pivot given his declining mobility and lower press resistance, unless the opposition sat deep and allowed him time and space on the ball. That's aside from the lack of a good point forward for his setup (Memphis was unsuccessfully tried, Rooney wasn't very impressive), or effective players out wide - especially with the sale of Di María.LVG wanted a double pivot. That run was when LVG's hand was forced & he had to use a modern midfield 3. LVG's midfield 3 would be double pivot and a traditional no 10. Herrera ain't LVG's no 10. As one of the pivot role, Herrera as sole creative one is not that good: lack passing range, ability to carry the ball through midfield, complete control the tempo of the game. A sole defensive one for LVG would require calmer straits. Mourinho can adapt to players' ability & strait while still keep fundamental of his system, so it's no problem.
No, not for the Chelsea game specifically in terms of following Hazard around. More as in through the course of the season in a combative, all-action role. eg. here are his ratings from the City game in 2015:What do you mean when you say Louis used him in a similar role during United's six game winning run? I'm not disagreeing, just genuinely interested. To me, during that run he played in quite an orthodox right side of a midfield 3.
Vs Chelsea was a role I don't think I have seen before for a player like Herrera. He played as a pseudo tucked in right back behind Valencia with Darmian playing a similar role on the other side. It was almost a 2-2-4-2 with Herrera on the right of the second 2.
Thinking about it, I remember Fergie did something similar vs Liverpool when his full backs followed McManaman and Berger when they played behind a single striker.
HERRERA
Kept his recent dominant form going. Had an interesting battle with Silva that kept the Blues’ key player quite. 8
The way he followed Hazard, that would be really creepy outside the pitch.
He's the joint 5th highest rated player on here alongside Carrick and Mata who are also on 6.3. 4th is Mkhitaryan, 3rd is Romero, 2nd is Bailly and 1st is Valencia. Zlatan is just behind Herrera in 6th with 6.2.An average rating of 6.3 this season astounds me.

I'd say out of all of those, Valencia and Zlatan are the only ones you could argue has had a better season.
Yeah exactly, he's only played 13 games whereas Herrera has played 40.Romero hasn't, but I understand why his rating is higher, purely because when he has played he hasn't done anything wrong.

Did his job so well yesterday. Sickening how fit he is. Nice of Luiz to duck out of the way of his shot too.
Strongly disagree that he was average in his first season.Yes because hes definitely not only now showing his potential and hasn't been average at best over the past 2 seasons.
I would even go as far as giving him a perfect 10. That is as perfect a performance you could possibly ask for, for a 'man-marking' midfielder - a goal, an assist, and completely nullified the best player in the league.Such a solid player. Impressive performance yesterday.
9/10

Lot of us were saying he was being ridiculously misused with all his best attributes neutralised by the ridiculously limited system. An all action CM told to stay put, not chase the ball, not to press, not to move from his position etc. Bizarre.I remember last season when plenty on here had convinced themselves that he was overhyped. Should be a warning to some that we should be showing a bit of patience, rather than writing off players after a poor season.
