American Politics

Perhaps so but it's constantly spouted by rightwing media and talk radio personalities and drilled into the mindsets of numerous Americans. I too once drank this koolaid though I never went as far to believe Democrats were socialists in the Nazi sense or communists in the Stalin view.

The ironic thing is our most popular sports league, NFL, is socialism to a t and we love the league.

that would mean majority rule

What majority though? The majority of voters or the party that just happens to control the majority in the House and/or Senate and maybe even have the Presidency. Of course it gets more complicated when say you have a President of one party and either or both the House and the Senate in control of the other party. Which party can claim the majority? A party can gain the Presidency, control of the House or control of the Senate without getting a majority of votes accross the country.

The idea of majority rule can be a bit complex can't it. Of course not just talking about the current political situation, but looking at the bigger picture of both history and the future.

The fact is the majority of voters voted for the Democratic party in congress and for the Presidency. There is nothing complicated. Allow the President his say and the Senate to vote accordingly. This should apply to Supreme Court judges too. The filibuster would have remained if not for the complete irresponsibility of the GOP. Let them win elections based on their ridiculous platforms instead of their dishonesty which has brought this about.

Typical facebook post I see from rightwingers. I'm the last post, and the Cody guy is liberal as well but shaking things up with sarcasm.

My favorite insult Dad has when Democrats come on the news: "They don't even have two brain cells to rub together!"

Referring to a statement made by a mayor, about a man shooting 4guys attacking him in a subway lol set my daddy off! "Wth do they want us to do?! You can't protect you! Cops don't protect you! So you're stuck victimized by the scum of the earth!" Lol!!

  • Cody LunaThat's why most scientists and college professors self identify as liberal. That's why you can't trust science, because dinosaur bones were put here by the devil to tempt mankind. Sounds like a reasonable guy. Smfh

  • Tina MarieCollege professors rarely have real life experience actively exercising their knowledge. They learn a few things in college. Learn a few more things && form their educated opinions and try to teach it to others.
    Science. Lol

  • Joe RobinsonI would give that some professors don't know their shit. But that's only the young ones who are regurgitating what they've been taught.

However, the older professors are usually retiring from the field and actually were invested in their area.

I would say it all depends on the professor and what their background is. Last I knew, though, you couldn't just go straight into teaching college classes without having had experience in the field itself. *shrug*

  • Richard AguilarThese discussions are always entertaining. Like it even matters if scientists or professors are liberals or not, they are probably the liberals worth listening too. However they are not the same as the Moronic ones in washington passing ineffective laws to pander to their base.

This is a brilliant piece of journalism from O'Reilly. Bubble life is fantastic when viewing from the inside.

billoreillymediabias.jpg

Here's former George W. Bush administration press secretary and current Fox News commentator Dana Perino, on Fox News Sunday, moaning that the mean Democrats these days live in a media bubble.
Democrats and the liberals live in the biggest mainstream media bubble ever created in the history of the universe. And so, if you look at Republicans across many of the states governors, or state legislators, Republicans are actually doing what a really good work, they just nationally they're taking a hit on their reputation.
I can't top that, so I'll just leave it there.

Does your head ache talking to those righties?

Yes at this moment that is the majority, but I was also talking about not just the here and now, but future situations also. It is possible to have a majority in each house and even hold the Presidency without receiving a majority of the votes nationwide. But I know in this thread we only discuss the hear and now, that is all that matters.

Here is the point....once again. What is the point of preserving the fillibuster if it is only used for abuse as the republicans have done throughout Obama's Presidency. Just to teach everyone who voted for him a lesson never to vote for a black man?. The fact is they have been doing everything to disenfranchise the majority. What is the point of having elections then? The Democrats have never done what they have done.

yes the fillibuster rule was only ever put in place by the republicans for the express use to against Obama. Not defending the repubs at all, but was just pointing out that the here and now of the situation may not always be the case and has not always been the case, but as always with US politics that sort of thinking just doesn't really have a place.

Fox News viewers believe Mandela was a terrorist on the level of Al Qaeda. Completely missing the fact that Mandela and his ilk were fighting off an oppressive regime that basically desired to eradicate non-whites (albeit not to the extremity of Nazi Germany), and thus violence ultimately became a necessary means, kinda like eliminating AQ targets is often necessary (drone strikes is a separate subject).

I wonder if this TP base would also consider US forefathers fighting for sovereignty and no taxation without representation as a form terrorism.

I'm glad my bubble popped eventually. Took some time, some travels, some experiences of other people outside that cozy bubble life of right-wing thinking. The tipping point was listening to those jackasses in 2009 making it their vow to ensure Obama was a one-term president. What about running our government as elected?

Also, I finally dropped religion which seems to have given me a new and better insight to life.

Massive change. For starters, I tend to research more versus spouting off what I heard on Fox or whatever. I possess an internal locus these days which has allowed me to view the world differently, and with as much an open-mind as possible. I blame part of my past views on how I was raised by dimwits that never sought education or stepping outside their little bubble, their little safety net.

I absolutely detest organized religion and the Tea Party/far right views, which probably makes me close-minded in that respect. But I prefer that having lived that life and experiencing firsthand, I am close-minded to it because I know and see how destructive it is.

I think most of us could join nearer the middle, which is pretty much where today's dems are IMO.

Is America on its way to a plutocracy? (or perhaps a return to a prior plutocracy that engulfed the US for many decades up until the Great Depression)

---We don’t have emperors yet, but we do have the Roberts Court that consistently privileges the donor class.

We don’t have emperors yet, but we do have a Senate in which, as a study by the political scientist Larry Bartels reveals, “Senators appear to be considerably more responsive to the opinions of affluent constituents than to the opinions of middle-class constituents, while the opinions of constituents in the bottom third of the income distribution have no apparent statistical effect on their senators’ roll call votes.”

We don’t have emperors yet, but we have a House of Representatives controlled by the far right that is now nourished by streams of “dark money” unleashed thanks to the gift bestowed on the rich by the Supreme Court in the Citizens United case.

We don’t have emperors yet, but one of our two major parties is now dominated by radicals engaged in a crusade of voter suppression aimed at the elderly, the young, minorities, and the poor; while the other party, once the champion of everyday working people, has been so enfeebled by its own collaboration with the donor class that it offers only token resistance to the forces that have demoralized everyday Americans.---

And the Democrats are little angels who get their money from crowd-funding campaigns on Kickstarter.

The Citizens United case was just fine. The people who are after real influence don't really care who gets into power, they'll privileged access to every congressman and senator anyway.
