 why am I not surprised by this revelation?

I've had letters in the paper published that embarrassed my wife at the time as she was still anchoring and I was ripping the piss out of the standards of local news. Channel 13 are the worst though...sensationalist garbage most of the time.

She didn't had medicare? My wife's grand mother died here then her dad and mom and we didn't get any bill.
My mother was insured by Tricare (my father was retired military when he died) and Blue Cross (she was a retired teacher) and we still got hit with this bill. NO, because of the other insurance she didn't have medicare.
The issue isn't really coverage so much as the ridiculous cost of medical care. Ever seen a doctor driving an old car (non-vintage) or living in a non-gated community?

Where is that? You call an ambulance if is an emergency which they are run by local firefighters and they will charge the insurance a few hundred dollars but if that person doesn't have insurance they will not charge a dime, you guys must be living in a big city or don't live in US at all.

Call me crazy, but wouldn't it make more sense to have the ambulances run by paramedics rather than firefighters?

Not in New Jersey you pay $1 a month until they send you a letter saying you don't have to pay, may take years but eventually they don't want your dollar anymore because costs more for them to process the payment.

If this is correct, you do know that you as a taxpayer is picking up the tab right? Would you rather do this than make Health Insurance companies charge an honest rate (I mean not rape the user). This is what the ACA tries to do. Why are you fighting for them? What you are happy with is pure socialism. Just think if the insurance companies had to pay for this, you will pay lower taxes. :)

Don't blame the doctors. Blame the insurance companies. They are the ones that need to be eliminated from the equation...and they will in time.

How did this fecker get so much pull within the GOP?

http://www.politico.com/story/2013/...gop-colleagues-government-shutdown-97753.html

--“It was very evident to everyone in the room that Cruz doesn’t have a strategy – he never had a strategy, and could never answer a question about what the end-game was,” said one senator who attended the meeting. “I just wish the 35 House members that have bought the snake oil that was sold could witness what was witnessed today at lunch.”--

--“He kept trying to change the subject because he never could answer the question,” the senator said. “It’s pretty evident it’s never been about a strategy – it’s been about him. That’s unfortunate. I think he’s done our country a major disservice. I think he’s done Republicans a major disservice.”--

It's funny how Armando Ianucci's comedies end up actually happening in the real world. This happened in Veep, the episode "Shutdown."

The former but the latter should see him lose in any primary along the way, or in the presidential debates. But I now see his mother registered him as a US citizen after his birth.

Saw a comment about ALEC financing the Tea Party and buying up politicians and votes. Anyone think ALEC is behind much of this "grass roots movement" lark? I know the Koch brothers have been exposed already.

I'm sure a few local federal employees would enjoy having an in-person conversation with this asshole.
http://mediamatters.org/blog/2013/10/03/foxs-varney-on-furloughed-federal-employees-i-w/196261

I can't perform military duty during this shutdown. I'm a reservist and often work between 6-12 months a year on volunteer duty. But due to the shutdown those MPA and RPA days are on hold. So no work for me for a while. Fortunately, the GI Bill isn't affected and I can attend school in the meantime and draw stipend and a housing allowance. The traditional guard and reserve had their October drill canceled. And numerous civil service employees are currently furloughed. This Verney jackass can feck right off.

I think the point about it being about him is the right one. He knew that in the Senate he wouldn't be on the front line of the fight and avoid the backdraft when/if they Repubs fold. He can cheerlead from the side and win all the Tea Party plaudits in the lead-up to the 2016 nomination.

Probably the best thing I've read about all of this, from Jon Chait (as per) - http://nymag.com/daily/intelligencer/2013/09/debt-ceiling-showdown-the-fight-of-obamas-life.html

Thanks for that, I've been at a loss to understand the politics of this.

Does anyone want to hazard a guess at how long all this nonsense will last?

In it, he also links to the piece from 18 months or so back that Plech always used to link in the old election thread, it's a great further context to why this is all happening - http://nymag.com/news/features/gop-primary-chait-2012-3/

As to predictions, it's kind of hard because you're dealing with such a chaotic element in the Tea Party. But really this all seems to rest on Boehner, he can end it all now if he wanted by putting a clean bill up for a vote. I don't think Obama is going to back down (rightfully), so the question is basically - will Boehner relent before the default deadline? I think he will, but he may well try and draw it out as long as he possibly can.

Boehner has said he will not allow a default. The business community will lynch him. I don't expect this shutdown to go on much longer either. Each day drives the GOP own further in the polls. The President is rightly not giving in to the extortion.

What's the 'feel' like in the US. When I spent a lot of time there in the 90s the wages/lifestyle were pretty good even for unglamorous jobs - I get the idea that's over.

If you're poor you are completely fecked, if you're middle-class you're somewhat fecked.

According to one tea party congressman I heard on MSNBC some time ago : "Compromise is you coming over to my side and agreeing with me, not me agreeing to anything you put forward or propose".

That one statement nicely summed up those idiots.

do righties really believe Health Insurance companies do anything other than just add unnecessary costs to the industry? Its the one industry that has zero added value.

Just imagine if we did not have them in the middle. The US population is so large that if single payer were implemented, we will have the best health care in teh world and it would cost a fraction of what it costs.

its quite funny to see the less insane republicans like Boner, McConnel and their ilk doing the bidding of complete crazies like Cruz, just because they want to get re elected. Trouble is their party is fracturing and sinking before their eyes. Heck even their racist base can see their 401ks drying up.

a 'judge' going into dementia before our very eyes. cant wait to see this guy start drooling from his bench and his eyes bulging out with insanity..... oh wait.

I was talking about Jimmy Carter in a meeting today and the tea party dude started bugging out, Their hatred for the other side is deep and really strange. I don't know how anybody could hate Jimmy Carter unless he'd drowned their dad in peanuts or something.

I absolutely loved Carter's grandson revenge on Romney, who is not fit to clean Jimmy Carters shoes. 47% indeed :smirk:

I just found out he is in San Jose tomorrow. If I didn't have something on I'd drive down there and try and meet him. He's an inspirational man.

He's there to work on some Habitat for Humanity houses. He still helps build houses for poor people at his age.
