Jesus. How's the opportunism in the GOP?
So according to some of you, anyone who happens to disagree with you is either, stupid, crazy or plain clueless?

Oh, I missed that memo. Carry on then!
If you have an argument to make then go for it.
I actually don't. I just found the tone of the thread over the last couple of pages strange. Part of the reason why this shutdown is happening is precisely because people on both sides of the argument are far too certain in their beliefs and aren't open to the possibility that while the other side may be wrong [in their opinion], they may have made some mistake of reasoning that led them to their opinion. Not that they are motivated by stupidity, evil, racism, hatred or whatever.
Well no, it's mostly to do with one fringe of one party, in one half of one branch of government acting like children because a law they don't like that was passed several years ago is being enacted.
That fringe probably thinks you're all stupid too! And isn't that the point of politics? Passing laws you like and repealing or blocking those you don't?
...the law is passed. It's been upheld by the supreme court. The Tea Party has shut down the US government in a vain attempt to pull it. There are no two sides to this argument. They are in the wrong.

Well clearly they think there are ways to kill the bill (by defunding it), and are going for it. It's probably very annoying, but that's democracy.
Ah yes, here comes the "both sides are equally bad" bullshit. Which is just that. Bullshit. I am no fan of the Democrats, but they have to be put into context with the gaping pit of evil and ignorance that is the GOP. How they remain a viable political party in the US is honestly beyond me. If anyone tried something like this in Norway they would probably be shot.
And we don't even have the death penalty.
I don't think they think I'm stupid, just too liberal and gullible.
Nah, it's not democracy, it's extortion. When you have to resort to closing the federal government to try get something done, you aren't upholding the will of the people.
I'm pretty sure extortion is illegal.

I particularly like barros 'point' about how all food stamp claimants use it to buy drugs .
the typical Republican mindset. I use the word mind lightly here.
Yet when you call people like that stupid they get all upset. Why should we have to make allowances for stupids?
Is there any particular reason the caf tends to refer to them almost exclusively as the GOP? Are there negative connotations to it?
They're wonderful, I know, but I was wondering specifically if there was any reason this forum seems more inclined than the media I tend to come across to choose the term 'GOP' over 'Republicans'.It's an acronym for the official party name, Grand Old Party.
The irony in that it is indeed based on old, outdated conservative views that are practically no longer valid except to wealthy white people and closeted/open racists. Sadly, many people not in the aforementioned category still vote Republican despite the party's (and its corporate backers, such outstanding citizens like the Koch brothers) attempts to keep the majority of the public below middle-class and keep themselves wealthy (and garner more and more wealth to themselves).
The biggest con job the GOP have pulled is convincing people that are not in the 1% bracket that they have their interests at heart.
I like how you've gone from "they're both in the wrong here" to "yeah they're trying to extort the government, so what?" in less than a page.
You're right in that this describes the general dysfunctional nature of how things have gotten here, and what's often a typically pretty ridiculous tone on this board. For constructive political discourse, consensus building, getting things done, etc. it's dreadful.
In this case though, we're talking about specifics. A specific timeout, law, process, faction, tactic, etc. In this case I'd say it really is a case of one set of self-righteous delusionots that think they care about their country while somehow simultaneously not caring about its people. It's a self-reinforcing closed circle of closed minds. Typically they're the sort you'd just ignore, but given where they're sitting... They thrive on their siege mentality, so maybe we should take the bait and put them under siege. Would be nice if the sane end of the GOP would pitch in.
