There is climate change. It is a natural event as we were heading that way anyway. It's the speed we're heading that way in, that humans are affecting. When you look at it it's only slight but it's enough. What we need to be concerned with is trying to keep the natural world as it is though. We are in a very small space of time living in the perfect environment for us to thrive as a species. Deviation from this will spell our doom and it's us as we are threatening. feck polar bears. They look nice on ads and nature shows. I'm more concerned about us. The world will happily shake us off like a bad case of fleas and get on with the job of evolution. We just don't need to give it any help in removing ourselves from the equilibrium.

This is very true although polar bears merely give us an indication of habitats that put a species to extinction due to climate change. First polar bears, won't be long before humans will be next on that list.
The US is front & center in the climate change front and could be a part of the change to help reverse/slow the trend but I've seen little inertia on that end to actually do anything but make it worse. I said this after Sandy, it will take things getting a lot worse before the US does anything I fear - they do, after all, love to wait until it's broken before fixing anything

If that axe involves closing some foreign bases I'm all for it. Other than that not a time to be downsizing the military.
the funny thing is other than Barny Frank...(there may be one or two others) not a peep out of anyone about closing those bases. Both sides have got theri hand in it imo.
As for military budget, I think it is pretty bloated. I doubt any cuts Hagel will make will weaken us in any fashion. We can take out most countries without putting one soldier on land.
I don't think they will downsize teh standing army if that is what you mean btw.
Base closing suggestions, especially closing ones in the US, are always worth a good laugh at US Politicians. You can see the most anti-military spending member of Congress or the Senate suddenly become almost Hawk like when it is suggested a base in their district/state should be closed.
Always worth looking at bases both overseas and in the US and make sure we really need them.

Bases provide employment....surely these soldiers can be brought back to the US and still be useful? Or is the thought that they would be released from the forces?
Overall I do think we spend a lot more on military spending than needed. We can reduce spending quite a bit without weakening our defence.

What I'm saying about right wing propaganda is . . . spending only seems to be "spending" or "big government" when it's for some kind of social investment or safety net, or nanny state bollocks, especially for programs that may benefit minorities. It never comes into mention with the right wing when the "spending" is for the military industrial complex, the military, wars, homeland security, police forces, the prison industrial complex, the empire, the drug war, etc. All the sort of stuff with fascistic tendencies they hold so dear and rake the tax payer for. They fecking looove to spend on all that crap, and they know so much of their voter base comes from all those bully boy industries. What a bunch of fecking hypocrites.
