He must just not be training well. If he wasn’t going to get any minutes we’d have loaned him out. I feel like the manager is saying I’m not just going to fire you in, I don’t need to rotate, show me something. I understand people feeling aggrieved about Antony taking all “his” minutes but I assume the manager wants Amad to eventually hit the first team with proper intensity instead of 5 mins here and there and back out on loan again next year. This is just based on a hunch. If he can get a start or two before the end of the season and really grab the chance then the club have a big decision to make.

Not sure if its how he's training but its a theory. So far in EtH's time here he has handled bringing in younger players pretty well. He's done a good job with Garnacho and Mainoo. Seems to slowly be giving Kambwala opportunities. He gave opportunities to Pellistri who pretty much proved what most of us knew that he wasn't that good. If Amad is capable of taking Antony's spot then he will eventually. Nothing EtH has shown so far says that if Amad is deserving or talented enough that he won't be given an opportunity at some point. So I'm not really sure why there's meltdowns from some people.

This thread is a circlejerk of doom. I thought Amad was good against Forrest when he came on but Antony has been grand since. We are back grinding out wins, some players even look happy. We don’t just have to fire everyone in. I think a team starting with Amad Garnacho and Mainoo is too inexperienced. It’s league cup stuff. Also fostering a high level of competition for places in the squad is the best thing a manager can do even if standards haven’t been high enough this season for one reason or another

These players got their chances because of injury crisis.

Mainoo and Garnacho are his young player picks.

Pellistri, Hannibal and Kambwala have come in and got a couple of games to cover when first team players have been injured and left holes in the squad. Mainoo and Garnacho will play instead of established first teamers even if they are fit because he's chosen them. The other 3 get a chance as cover. Right now we dont need cover for the winger spots. He certainly doesnt seem to be one of ETH's picks like Mainoo and Garnacho.

I’m sure he will get his chance and I hope he takes it. The one thing that concerns me and it’s just a perception, but he may not have the “engine” that ten hag likes out of all his players. His technical ability is up there with the best in the squad, no question about it. We know he has an eye for goal as well. He has vision and intelligence. He needs to fight his way up to 2nd choice and take seize his moment. Hoping for the best.

Yeah, I actually came on here to post that as a possibility as well.

In thinking about Forson seemingly moving ahead of him, and Amad not being used at all the last few games, I did wonder if it had anything to do with what they're both showing / not showing in training?

ETH (rightly) makes a big thing about rewarding effort in training from kids and it does seem strange that Amad isn't getting any minutes at all and has fallen below the less experienced Forson.

So, yeah, I was wondering if Forson is showing more energy or hunger or something in training? And ETH wants to see more from Amad before he 'earns' his chance?

If what he did in the championship last season wasn`t enough to showcase his talent to the manager then not sure what else he can do. Guy is no kid anymore either so not sure what the problem is currently. Maybe they are trying to be dead sure he doesn`t pick up an old injury again.

I’m not even one of those who thinks Amad is potentially the answer to our problems but it makes no sense not giving him a run of games.

Our RW can’t be any weaker than it is at the moment. His competition is Antony and Garnarcho and for a club of our standing that is really average. Amad should be played to give us a level of certainty, if he plays well we keep him as an option and if he doesn’t, he’s put on show for potential buyers to assess him in the PL.

It’s absolutely ridiculous that Forson is getting minutes over him. I’ve seen nothing in Forson from preseason till now that suggests he should even be in the squad. Another baffling EtH decision.

Amad's a much bigger talent than Forson in general, doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. Don't have anything against Forson but he's one I never would've pegged with a chance of making it.

The other day I was mocked by some deluded poster for suggesting that Amad should be unhappy that no matter how shit Antony performs that Antony will always be ahead of Amad in the manager’s eye. Nothing I saw in Antony yesterday suggests he should be preferred to Amad.
I think you can give Hag the benefit of the doubt for now (though I wouldn't, really) and say that Antony's performance coming on last night was atrocious and that Amad should be the first winger sub for the next game or two.

If Antony is the first sub against West Ham again... Then we can complain fully and freely.

I don't think Ten Hag really is in love with Antony as much as people say, he's already dropped him from the first team, given his appalling showing last night I expect Ten Hag won't be far off being done with him entirely.

You only quoted the last line of my post, which was all about current training. So I meant maybe ETH thinks Amad has to 'show more' in current training sessions, not that it wasn't a successful loan last season.

Amad has some natural talent and ability, he deserves a shot. He cannot be any worse than Antony who is now costing us goals as well as offering zero threat. its criminal and I would be pretty unhappy if I was Amad. It was reported earlier in season that a lot of disharmony in camp reflected unease at ETH's signings and insistence on playing likes of Antony regardless how poor he was.

100% Amad is always looking for the option to move the ball forward something that can't be said of Antony.

It's political with Antony -- ETH decided to get him working at any cost. He has to make sure his most expensive acquisition doesn't turn into the biggest flop in united history.
He already owns so many records at the moment he can't possibly afford to add this to the list.

Could have said the same about Elanga and Pellistri and whoever else gets minutes. There’s no point in getting worked up about it. The manager preferring a physical player (in McT) has driven me crazy but if he’s getting results then it’s fair enough. The rest is up to Amad.

One way to look at this is that football is just a game meant as nothing more than a diversion from what Hobbes described as a nasty, short and brutish existence, at least in the state of nature

That’s true but only up to a point. What we supporters of our clubs want to see, apart from glorious victory, is merit rewarded. If De Gea is performing like a paraplegic on math then he must yield to a better keeper. (Sad it didn’t work out as planned.). If Antony consistently underperforms, yield he must as well. We’ve seen enough of both Antony and Amad now to require Antony to yield to Amad to allow him, Amad, to prove whether he’s worthy of being chosen ahead of Antony in the depth chart. So I see it.

Amad must be walking around during training to not get a sniff when the options are so poor/ young and inexperienced.
But who knows, we can just guess.

Oh, absolutely. It is strange that he's not getting many chances, especially falling behind Forson like he has. Just looking for possibilities, not based on overall ability as, otherwise, you'd think he'd have been used? So just wondering if he's not showing enough of whatever ETH is looking for in training or something?

Have to say it's utter bollocks bringing up Antony when Forson is getting on ahead of him. It's on him to get in the side. Antony has been pushed out the side by Garnacho, Amad needs to find his way into this side in his own merit.

Didn't Forson assist the winner? Not sure I could complain about the manner of that win myself.

It's got a Hannibal vibe about it this. There must be something ETH isn't keen on behind the scenes.

As much as I’d like to see Amad get some game time I can also understand why he hasn’t had minutes yet. Although the players in front of him have been up and down in form he is still coming back from long term injury and we haven’t been solid enough in games to bring him on with no pressure.

In the next 2 weeks he will get action but he has to take the opportunity. Not saying I’m expecting a great performance, but be confident in doing what he is good at.

He did well to keep the ball, but calling that an assist as plus is a stretch!

Watch the run he made to create the space for Mainoo after he gave him the ball. Lovely bit of play from Forson if you ask me.

The funny thing now for me is the physicality issue with Amad because after watching Antony recently I would say that Amad has the upper hand there as well.

He also makes the run to create the space for Mainoo. Small but important detail.
No, I agree Forson does well in this, but still always find it a bit OTT to use it as a point to Forson when the goal is a solo as Mainoos.

Keeps control of a slightly dodgy pass, lays it off to his teammate and then immediately runs into a space that drags the defenders away from the guy who scores. Not sure what more you're expecting someone to do to count as an assist tbh, feels a bit uncharitable.

I think a few of us here knew this would happen under ETH.

That's why we suggested that he go out on loan to regain his match-fitness and sharpness back in November. He wont get his opportunity except for a few minutes here & there... and its not even that at the moment.

Because after Forson did his bit did you think Mainoo had a goalscoring opportunity?

Yes, did you not see the space in front of him as Forson makes the run? The meg and the finish were very impressive from Mainoo but the run opened up beautifully for him. Actually a team goal even if you didn't realise it at the time.

Train well and stay fit. They latter is something he really struggled with. Long injury, then ill when he could've had a chance. This stuff is the reason he got rid of Donnie, who could not be relied upon due to injuries. This is why it's rumored he wanted to get rid of Varane as well.

I get this logic to be fair. You can't build a team around people who are sometimes match fit.

Donnie was rubbish, injuries obviously didn't help. but he was one of our many baffling signings who was not suited for PL. Amad is currently fit and training, yet cant get minutes ahead of Antony, who not only offers no threat but is now costing us goals as he constantly surrenders possession. That's on ETH.

There's absolutely no way when the ball came to Mainoo you, I or anybody else thought "this is a goalscoring chance." He's about 40 yards out with 3 or 4 Wolves players between him and the goal.

This is not to downplay Forson. In the very little bits we've seen he's looked tidy and athletically a level up from Antony and Diallo. It was a good bit of movement to open up the space.

I don't get the fuss over Diallo. He hasn't featured in two of the three games he's been available for this season. It's not like he's being left out month after month.

He has to get some game time. Rashford and Garnacho are our starters now. But for me, Amad should be an impact sub not Antony. Antony has been poor this year and it should only be normal that Amad, who is now fit, takes his chance

Would Antony have survived or even flourished in the Championship? Doubtful.

And yet...

Donnie got his chances, he was a bit shit, that`s why he didn`t play much and is now out of the club.
Amad played loads of games last season for Sunderland. He has been a touch unlucky with his injuries but it is far too soon to think he is another Martial who can`t stay fit for more than 3 games.

Pellistri is still a young boy and Antony is a one trick pony (and struggles to even perform the trick). Antony gets his minutes because ETH blew his load on him. Pellistri ≈ Diallo ≈ Elanga ≈ Chong which is to say many players have come through the United system and in many cases are marginally equal, decent players who belong in Europe but just not starting for a trrophy contending club.

Antony may be the worst signing of ETH's MUFC career but then he signed Onana.

Antony got his minutes last season because he was the best option on the right and he had a decent first season, his transfer fee aside. This season the only player who has come in and provided better performances than Antony (as bad as they have been) on the right is Garnacho which is why he is now likely to start there. Pellistri is 1 year younger than Antony...if he is a youngster then so is Antony. I think its fair to say whatever you think of Antony's ability and performances, Pellistri is clearly not even United squad material. Amad has been injured most of the season, as with any injured player under Ten Hag and baring in mind his age he will most likely be given opportunities slowly and its then up to him to take his chances. Again, I don't see how anyone can see how EtH has blooded in Mainoo and Garnacho and think if Amad is as talented as we think that EtH will not give him chances. I don't even think there is one example of EtH's time here were a clear talent has not been given an opportunity.

Pellistri didn't cost 95 million Euros (102.7 million USD). Antony, all he has is speed, and if the right conditions (open space, keeper leaning left, no pressure) are present, he can left hook a shot into the upper left corner of the goal (sometimes). He is half the player that Phil Foden is. Technically, Pellistri is better than Antony. But as I mentioned, Pellistri belongs in the group of many promising United youngsters that are good enough for Europe but not good enough for MUFC.
