All-time same (first) name XI...

Trying to make the best XI of my namesakes, but it's surprisingly tough. There is an absurd abundance of quality right backs (Alves, McGrain, Petrescu, Carvajal), but not so much on the other side. I know that McGrain used to play on the left for Scotland a lot, but I don't believe it would function in this team, due to the severe lack of creativity further upfront and no quality wide player available on the left flank. With Danilo and De Rossi in front of defence, it also makes sense to go for the most offensive full-backs possible. Alves is the obvious choice and Rose, as far as I can see, the only one. I omitted Blind because of Passarella. In regards to Sturridge, one singular sensational season is simply not good enough. Also, Blanchflower is technically a Robert, so they can have him.

GK: Danijel Subašić

RB: Dani Alves
CB: Daniel van Buyten
CB: Daniel Passarella
LB: Danny Rose

DM: Daniele De Rossi
DM: Danilo Alvim
AM: Dani Ceballos

RW: Daniel Bertoni
LW: Danny
CF: Dani Ruiz-Bazán

Options: Blind, Agger, McGrain, Petrescu, Carvajal, Pereira, Borimirov, Parejo, Popivoda, Fonseca, Sturridge
For the future: Zagadou, Olmo, James, Welbeck

Fellow namesake here, great work.

HOWEVA, Parejo > Ceballos, don't let the big teams on the resume fool ya

Battiston or Rice over van Aanholt! :)

You can resolve the Forssell conundrum by selecting Míchel as the right midfielder, while moving Laudrup to left midfield (à la Iniesta/Isco in contemporary football). Also, Migueli can start over Silvestre...

Once again, I bow to your knowledge!

It was a close call. I figured I'd go for the more attacking one and it was mostly for his time with Betis tbf.

:) Nope, not all.
Many yes but it wouldn't even reach half of all.

Also, I tried remembering a few, but not many footballers with that first name variations made it to the big stage I mean not famous enough.
Let's see..
  • Mohamed Salah
  • Mohamed Sissoko
  • Mahamadou Diarra
  • ???

I know it’s pedantic, but are ‘Frank’ and ‘Francis’ technically the same name? I ask this as I saw a Frank team earlier with both Franco Baresi and Francesco Totti. They are both Italian. Surely Franco and Francesco cannot BOTH be the Italian version of Frank? I just assumed Francesco was Francis and Franco was Frank.

That said, I’m of course splitting hairs here!

Get your point and have now adjusted my attacking force in accordance with the name Frank. Good fun this I've got some more teams I'm working on!

Tbh, I’m probably being extra. I’m sure many ‘Francis’ go by ‘Frank’ in real life so ai think they are both acceptable.

Thomas the Tank Engine would have been better!

Thought I’d bump seeing as this has been an international break discourse on here. Some great teams on earlier pages.

Roberts are overstacked with quality: Moore, Charlton, Baggio, Carlos… Luis & the likes are also very formidable, especially if you include Luigis like Riva,

But Franks probably take the cake:

Francisco Gento - Ferenc Puskás - Ferenc Bene - Franck Ribery
Frank Lampard - Frank Rijkaard
Frank de Boer - Franco Baresi - Franz Beckenbauer - Franco Causio
František Planicka

Can’t think of a proper right back off the top of my head but Causio played a right winger in zona mista, covering the entire wing pretty much, so he should do, it’s not like that defense is lacking in quality!
That Franks team is hard to beat. Although maybe Johns/Giannis/Juans/Johans could compete against them... And Luis's have a few Ballon d'Or between them and some crazy good players - Luis Suarez (x2), (Luis) Ronaldo, Luis Figo, Luis Enrique, Gigi Riva...

Life of Brian XI - It's not quality, but it is capable of winning the championship or the FA Cup at best.

Brian Laudrup - Brian Brobbey - Bryan Mbeumo
Brian Kidd - Brian McClair - Bryan Robson - Bryan Zaragoza
Brian Priske - Joe Bryan - Brian Oviedo
Brian Jensen ("The beast")

Manager: Brian Clough - Briana Banks (yes, a woman with many awards to her name too, progressive thinking.)

Ivan = John?

Learned something new today!
Yep. It goes from Hebrew originally (Yehochanan -> Yochanan) via Greek (Ioannis) to Latin (Ioannes -> Johannes). Complicated stuff. I would assume that in Slavic languages (your Ivan’s) you’d skip the Latin step though.

I wonder where Toney’s name comes from though. Is it the same Slavic Ivan or a random coincidence (like Greek & Indian Nikita that aren’t related).

Edit: I can’t seem to fix my formatting on my phone.

Joao Neves in an all-time John XI at 19 is impressive! I’d put Juan Sebastian V ahead.
