CDM. Thiago Motta
RCM. Thiago Alcantara
LCM. Tiago Mendes
CAM Diego Maradona

RS. Diego Costa
LS. Diego Milito

Love to see my name team so strong. Id have Cazorla ahead of Alcantara

Yep. It goes from Hebrew originally (Yehochanan -> Yochanan) via Greek (Ioannis) to Latin (Ioannes -> Johannes). Complicated stuff. I would assume that in Slavic languages (your Ivan’s) you’d skip the Latin step though.

I wonder where Toney’s name comes from though. Is it the same Slavic Ivan or a random coincidence (like Greek & Indian Nikita that aren’t related).

Edit: I can’t seem to fix my formatting on my phone.
John The Terrible just doesn’t have the same ring to it. =/

Lee Grant

Lionel Scaloni
Leon Balogun
Lee Dixon
Lee Young-Pyo

Leander Dendonker
Leon Goretzka
Leonardo

Lee Sharpe
Lionel Messi
Leroy Sane

Bench:

Lee Carsley
Lee Hendrie
Leon Bailey
Leon Osman
Leon Britton
Lee Kang-In

Very versatile name is ‘Lee’.

Leonidas, Spinazolla, Bonucci, too.

Alex Meret

Alexander-Arnold (definitely cheated with this one)
Alessandro Costacurta
Alessandro Nesta
Alex Sandro

Alexis Mac Allister
Alex Song
Alessandro Del Piero

Alexis Sanchez
Alexander Isak
Alejandro Garnacho

Bench:

Alessio Romagnoli
Alex (Brazilian centre half - Chelsea)
Alex Oxlade Chamberlain
Alex (Brazilian - #10 Fernerbache)
Alex Iwobi
Alexandre Pato
Ali McCoist

This is a squad that could compete for the Champions League.

Guess I should put this here:

Andreas Kopke
Andreas Hinkel Andreas Christensen Andrea Barzagli Andreas Brehme
Andrea Pirlo
Anderson Luís de Souza (Deco) Andres Iniesta
Andrei Kanchelskis Andrey Arshavin
Andrei Shevchenko

A surprisingly robust lineup. Brehme should probably step into midfield in tougher matches (replaced by Andy Robertson at left-back), but otherwise this seems like the optimal way to maximize talent.

Other subs include Lunin, Ranocchia, Herzog, Moller, Dossena, Cole, el al.

Arthurs form an unexpectedly strong spine with Friedenreich, Zico, and Vidal. To be rounded-out by the likes boka, Numan, Boruc, and Arthur Melo.

Stepney in goal surely? James of Arsenal and Jackson of Chelsea were also very highly regarded, though that's going back even further. SAF as manager as a bonus. McLeish of his Aberdeen side would be a decent option in defence too.

In more recent times, Hleb and Lacazette spring to mind as well. And you could probably get a decent women's XI.

Stepney is a clear omission here, although I can’t say that I am familiar with James or Jackson.

Hleb and Lacazette are good shouts too, although such is the strength of the squad that I’m still not sure they would get in, although Hleb over Garnacho probably but I’d have Isak and Pato over Lacazette.

And of course, Sir Alex on the touchline!

Can't figure out the defence, but Christian XI has some forward line in Cristiano Ronaldo, Christian Vieri and Hristo Stoikchov. Abbiati in the goal, Panucci at left back, Eriksen in the midfield.

Ronald Waterreus

Ronald De Boer

Ronald Araújo

Ronald Koeman

Ronnie Whelan

Ronaldinho

We all dream of a team of... fecking Eds? Seriously?

Edwin van der Sar
Duncan Edwards
Edgar Davids
Edson Arantes do Nascimento (Pele)
Eduardo Gonçalves de Andrade (Tostao)

That's a killer five-a-side squad right there. Other options still include Ed de Goey, Eduardos Camavinga, da Silva, Vargas and Salvio, and Vava and Strelstov.

Also Mazzola, Mostovoi, Altobelli, and probably every third Italian.

Christian Dailly, Christian Fuchs and Christian Ziege would come into the backline, with Panucci right back to accommodate Ziege. Christian Karembeu is also versatile enough to play full-back and provides French NT and Real Madrid pedigree.

You can get Pulisic in the squad further forward, and Benteke if you’re desperate!

Nick Pope

Neco Williams?
Nico Schlotterbeck
Niko Kovac
Nicolas Tagliafico

Nicky Butt
Nicolo Barella
Niko Kranjcar

Nico Williams
Nicolas Anelka
Nicholas Jackson

Bench:

Nikola Milenkovic
Nicholas Pepe
Nick Barmby
NICO GAITAN (c)
Nicklas Bentdner
Nicklas Fullkrug

Dino XI

GK: Zoff
LB: Triceratops
CM: Baggio
ST: T-rex

(I know it’s a lame joke)

Dean?

Doubt it’s the same name, but would open up a few possibilities if so. Saunders, Richards. Erm, Windass.

Gary XI
Bailey
Neville Gillespie Pallister Stevens
Doherty McAllister Speed Naysmith
Shaw Lineker
Sub. Cahill, Mabbutt, Hooper
Spoilt for choice at centre half but not a lot of competition elsewhere.

Team Michael:

Michel Preud’Homme

Michel Salgado
Miguel Nadal
Mikael Silvestre
Michel Bastos

Michael Essien
Michael Ballack
Michael Laudrup

Michel Platini

Michael Owen
Mikkael Forssell

Think Forssell is the stand-out weakness in that side, otherwise, pretty strong all round. Michael just wasn’t the most fancied name for the cool frontmen it seems, unless I have missed some.
Just play one striker and squeeze in Michael Carrick somehow to make it a diamond midfield.

Anyone done Team Steve?

Stevie G
Steve coppell
Steve Bruce
Steve Madanda
Steve mcmanaman
Steve mcmahon
Steve Sidwell
Steve hodge
Steve cook

I’m sure there are many more.

Team Thomas:

Finney Brolin Müller
Zizinho Häßler
Partey
Vermaelen Berthold Helmer Helveg
Ravelli
The bench is basically the Czech national team.

The Walters have Zenga, Samuel, Didi and... Weghorst. No wide players at all though.

I know it’s pedantic, but are ‘Frank’ and ‘Francis’ technically the same name? I ask this as I saw a Frank team earlier with both Franco Baresi and Francesco Totti. They are both Italian. Surely Franco and Francesco cannot BOTH be the Italian version of Frank? I just assumed Francesco was Francis and Franco was Frank.

That said, I’m of course splitting hairs here!

I mean…. Your team has like 4 different first names
Edit: more with the bench!

Team Gabriel:

Gabor Kiraly?

Djibril Sidibe
Gabriel Paulista
Gabriel Magalhaes
Gabriel Heinze

Djibril Sow
Gabriel Obertan
Gabriel Veiga

Gabriel Martinelli
Gabriel Batistuta

Bench:

Terrible midfield but strong attack and decent defence.

,

They are different names but they are all variations of the same name: Alex. They all translate to Alex in different languages. I think Franco translates to Frank and Francesco translates to Francis, which was my point. I wouldn’t have questioned Frank, Frenck, Franz and Ferenc for example - as they all mean ‘Frank’. I was being pedantic and asking the question though. Franco and Francesco surely can’t both translate to the same name in Italian?

Anyway, was being pedantic with my steward’s enquiry I appreciate!
