All-time same (first) name XI...

Peters surely have the best goalkeepers - Schmeichel, Shilton and Cech!

Wow, forgot Cech and the whole "Petr" variation of the name if there are others. Great goalie selection! "Petter" too, but there's only Petter Rudi, a 1990s Norway international midfielder that springs to mind, I remember him from Sheffield Wedensday. Just a backup slot for Rudi I think.

Eminike as an Emmanuel forward for you? Might have to change your formation if you can't think of others or if he's deemed not good enough?

Probabaly, but Gianluigi Buffon and Lev Ivanovich Yashin are both fairly minor stretches for the Johns.

("Lev"'s also viable for the already powerful ~Leo side from the last page.)

Stephane Guivarch
Stephane Chapuissat
Steve Marlet
Estevão (young as he is!)
Stephan El Shawaary

Then former Real Madrid pair Esteban Cambiasso and Estaban Granero in midfield.

Estevao and Esteban good shout. Steve Bull too.

I mean, quibbles over what you think a first name is aside, the same team with Baresi should automatically do the trick.

I went by the German Wikipedia entry for Franz. Franco would be a variant of Frank according to it.

Every source I've seen suggests "Franz"'s much more closely related to "Frank" than "Francois" or "Francisco".

Think there’s definitely a potential steward’s enquiry about whether Frank and Francis are the same name. Because Franco and Francesco shouldn’t be in the same team really. Franco and Francesco cannot BOTH be Italian for the same name.

Clearly, he'll never walk alone.

Really pushing it putting with the Rogerios, Marios and Romario in there but I'm not complaining  Actually thought someone might dig out players called Rio or even River from amateur leagues.

Great Rio Mavuba pickup!

Unique first names could be a cool team too

It's an interesting idea, but what's truly unique? Here are some fairly rare* ones in football, unique enough to be known by their first name alone.

*max. 25 results (one page) in the transfermarkt search

Neymar Radamel Arjen
Dirceu
Obdulio N'Golo
Bixente Hilderaldo Virgil Trent
Keylor
Fun facts:
  • Sócrates (via Sokratis) and Zinédine are slightly more common than expected, Trent far less common than expected.
  • Neymar Jr. is one of three Neymars in the entire database.
  • Somewhat surprisingly, the same goes for N'Golo Kanté.
  • Radamel Falcao is only one of two Radamels in the entire database. The other is his father, Radamel García.
  • Hilderaldo Bellini is the only Hilderaldo in the entire database. Truly unique!

Gary ?
Neville Pallister Cahill Bale
Speed McAllister Mabbutt McSheffrey
Lineker Shaw

Team Kevin:

Kevin Trapp

Kevin Mbabu
Kevin Wimmer
Kevin Vogt
Kevin Kilbane

Kevin-Prince Boateng
Kevin De Bruyne
Kevin Keegan

Kevin Campbell
Kevin Kuranyi
Kevin Phillips

Bench:

Kevin Pilkington (GK)
Caomin Kelleher (GK)
Kevin Gallagher
Kevin Nolan
Kevin Mirallas
Kevin Ball
Kevin Doyle
Kevin Gameiro
Kevin Davies
Kevin Schade
Kevin Volland

Very top heavy squad! Still, a team that could have an outside chance at a PL top 4 slot with world class players like KDB and KK, and depending on what season you get - potential high peaks from Kevin Phillips and KPB.

If you're not too fussed about etymology and are willing to add anyone with the "rio" part somewhere in their name, you can pair Romario up with Luis Nazário de Lima :)

I know very little about women football but wonder what would be the strongest female name. Alexia/Alexandra/Alex?

Shush. Was hoping I can sneak them in. How about Giacinto Facchetti and Riyad Mahrez then?

Lothar Matthaus is a good one to add
