All-Time Fantasy Draft

So now on the initial 13 squad, I can have more than 1 Italians; as long as I only field XI different nationalities?

As long as you have ten non-Italians you can pick 3 of them. Screw it, get 5 and field 9 players. Knock yourself out.

It's not remotely realistic to expect the average voter to be interested in reading about the Hungarian star of the 30s or Austrian star of the 40s, it's never going to happen. At the same time I really can't be bothered going for a votes-based team because by the time you get to the QFs, SFs it can get a bit dull. If I've got my own personal heroes to defend it might make things more interesting. Di Stéfano's genuinely the most awe-inspiring player I've seen, Brazil '82 is probably my favourite footballing side and Falcão was "el cerebro del equipo" as the Spanish commentators put it, and then Giggsy and Keane add a tangible feel to it having actually seen them live. I've no doubt Bozsik was a monstrous player and as an opposition player I'll regard him as that but it wouldn't feel right arguing for players I've only ever seen in grainy 30-min highlight reels (15 mins of which is pictures of the crowd reaction!). I'm sticking with players I know inside-out.

We're having that issue now, 3 players being considered and its whether to go for the modern star or the classic player who may be better. Very tough to predict how the voters will see it.

I was entranced by him from watching that classic Frankfurt final first and he never failed to impress thereafter. European Cup finals and SFs + friendlies for Spain is all I got to see of him, would love to get some footage of his time in South America. Just though he was fantastic all-round, such authority, such class...and who doesn't love those iconic step-overs of his?

You last night admitted you wanted Bozsik!

You last night admitted you wanted Bozsik!

I've flip-flopped between two extremes to be honest! On the one hand it's very much shaping up to be a team of my players but on the other it means I'll be missing out on genuinely outrageously talented players...Bozsik was always 2nd choice to Falcao though. There's still loads of really fantastic older players that I'm keeping my eye on so talking about long-term tactics is naive really, there's bound to be a couple who slip through that're just too good to turn down! I'll revise that statement to the core of my team will be very much based on what I've saw, with perhaps a couple of game-changers from the '50s and '60s that I've seen less of being brought in there to keep Don Alfredo happy.

Il take Ruud Krol and Javier Zanetti please.

Cold someone update the list for me please?

With Krol in there I think you've got even more reason to drop Beckenbauer back into defence. Re-create that Breitner-Beckenbauer type partnership in the backline that brought the Germans so much success.

My team is very attack focussed at the moment so my next pick is someone who has this defensive midfield role named after him and will allow Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Gazza to do what they want.

Claude Makelele

So all-time draft should include players from the 20s and 30s too right?

Yeah, I was thinking...

Gk
Beckenbauer
Zanetti CB CB Krol
DM
Didi
Eusebio

Just need to decide how I want to fill our the rest of the team, what kind of help I'm going to give Eusebio up top etc. should I go two either side of Didi or one behind him and one in front?

I'd just go for a simple 532 with Didi flanked by two players with great engines and Eusebio alongside a target-man of sorts as he thrived off of playing alongside Jose Torres for so long. Something like Neeskens-Didi-Falcao in terms of styles.

I'll take Pavel Nedved.

Classy set of players you've got there.. hope you can complete that team in similar fashion.

Thanks mate, will be PMing you when a get a chance for a few a bit of advice if thats ok. Couple of things left to do with my team so I'd like a opinion on whats best...

Feels good to steal pick from others.

Sorry guys, I couldn't log in for some reason on the works pc. Like Jiggs'Hamstring said, I pick Mário Coluna

images

Known as “The Sacred Monster” Coluna is one of the best all round midfielders ever and was a key component in the Eusebio/Benfica/Portugal glory years. The "Didi of Portugal".

Strong, elegant and with an ability to score long distance goals with ease. He was also known for is stamina which allowed him to control midfield battles.

ps: If I'm late again just carry on after half hour instead of the 6.

Where you intending on playing him mate?

Right now he's going to be pushed up alongside Charlton & Maradona in a narrow 4231. But that could change depending on who goes til my next turn.

Think Coluna is capable of dropping deeper, as is Charlton so there's a couple of options available still. Any advice?
