Of course. Different players and I love Ronaldo but from the various pieces I read and documentaries I watched on Garrincha it seems that our view in Europe is somewhat different to those in Brazil. They seem to rate Pele and Garrincha as fighting it out for number one player in Brazil and along with Maradona, of all time. And the rest are a level or two below.

Well, there is a difference in being loved and being rated. With Garrincha, there is a lot of both. More than anything he is loved in his country more than any other players as he was a true entertainer, he shared the crowd's emotions and he basically embodies the whole Brazilian spirit of being an entertaining team. Pele was the better player but since he was a lot like Messi is right now, that is a proper machine, flawless in every aspect and letting the ball do the talking, he is not loved as much as Garrincha. That is one reason he is rated pretty highly, not that he doesn't deserve to be.

If you look at just the footballing side, Ronaldo was every bit as good as he was IMO, a man with such a huge frame running at your with blistering pace and that insane ball control, he was a magnificent sight and despite his knee injuries he maintained his level as the best striker in the world even though he was never the same player he was at barca later on.

As far as rating them goes, I don't think there would be much of a difference between the two, but obviously Garrincha being the national iconic hero he was would be spoken of higher than Ronaldo.

BTW chaps, I'm not voting. My vote would go to thisistheone over the course of the game but KM has shored up some of his weaknesses and all that is clear right now is the gap is way too large. No need to extend it nor give a baseless sympathy vote. The right team is winning this, that's all.

Breitner was my first choice last time but lost out on him so if I get to the semi he is definitely getting picked. My other replacement would be a centre back most likely. Too much of a Weah fan to drop him. Think he's just brilliant.

And anto, I've slept on it & you're right. All in the moment, just defending myself and my players. No worries but what is this meltdown Gio speaks of in the 70's draft? Sounds insane.

I'd go Breitner and Sammer/Ronaldo. Scirea is an upgrade on Cannavaro - who was immaculate at the World Cup in '06 - but a Blanc/Scirea partnership doesn't smell right.

Think you've hit the nail on the head Gio. I'm definitely favouring Sammer along with Breitner.

Cheers KM for a good game and building a quality team.

Wait to see rivals, but yes, I thought Sammer for Blanc was the obvious pick for your defence particularly with him not clashing with a single other East German on the draft

Anyone else thinks that Maradona-Cruyff-Weah-Garrincha would have problems? Can see some morale problems there. Cocaine addict, above everyone else in everything, has been known to rage, a drunk.

Yups, some have raised it but mostly from a "they will all want to be the main man" basis. Rage/rebelliousness is good in small doses, in large doses and under pressure at the highest level... Well, you know, nothing good can really come out of that.

Can say that about almost any footballer. They're not saints and this aint a sweethearts draft otherwise Paul Scholes would be first pick and John Terry last.

Haven't seen anyone bring up such matters about George Best for example. Him and Garrincha have a lot in common from shagging to boozing. How would Baggio the Buddhist feel playing alongside somone like that? Then there's Robson also in the mix. How would Di Stefano or Baresi deal with playing with Roy Keane screaming in their faces? Every team has sinners & various issues. Probably best to stick to the football.

Agree a lot of footballers have issues, but not all, clearly. And no, Keane would not be as effective in certain teams. I can't see him working in Barca's current setup, not just as a player but Xavi/Iniesta/Messi would think he is a complete mentalist and wouldn't appreciate his style. For that team you would pick Busquets every day, despite him not being a better or more impactful individual.

Of course that matters! Football is after all a team sport. In the early stages the players' individual quality alone win the day, as the contests become increasingly tight those little niggly things make the whole difference. The more contested and important games are the more raw ability is put to the side and mentality and how much a team gels takes over. In fact, it is the single most important factor in making a team a winner or loser at the end of a knockout competition.

Agree that it's a team sport and I have a few wild boys in the side but I can use this as motivation for them to pull together for 2 more games. Tell them to look at all the doubt out there. "Other manager's in the draft don't think you can play together lads. They say you're a disaster waiting to happen & as a team, they think you can't win this tournament." Pin this up in the changing rooms before they go out:

Of course, that's if I can get a word in edge ways with Cruyff there ;)

I'd be surprised if he hadn't already subbed Diego off by then :D

Sure. This is when it gets really interesting because teams are so close games tend to be decided by such intangibles. You will be arguing how you will motivate them, someone else on how it's an unkitigated disaster, great fan-fiction  Sometimes one will be a whole load more convincing though. You really need to know your players at this stage or you will be at the receiving end of some very damaging news at times.

Congrats Thisistheone.

Tactical curveball. If enough people vote for KM here we can re-write the past and the semi has to be played again but against KM
