I don't know, but there were a few that did.

Anyway it's in the past, well, until next summer.

'Actually I'd just like to say that it was I who was responsible for all this transfer saga - that nice Senor Calderon has told me so, and that I'd best admit it in el Publico or in his capacity as 'o censor gordo' - the 'fat controller' he's gonna close down the railway between the Shitiesaga Bumboy and El Teatro del Suenos. And Suenos - or as we say in Portugal, sonhos, is, to me, el palavra mais importante, how you say, the most important word. Oh yes.'

Ronaldo 'I want to go'

Fergie 'Bollocks, and you're a fecking greasy headed big time charlie cnut'

Ronaldo 'Ok I stay, we've both agreed'

At least he's admitted it was his fault. I guess, P.R. is in full flow.

I am reading the comments on Marca and there are not so many kind words for Calderon! but also not for Marca themselves. How stupid are these people? did they really believe the stuff Marca printed?

Meh. It's certainly a step in the right direction. A step that was noticeably absent from Adebayor's "apology" to the gooners.

As I said a few pages back, I have no interest in hearing him apologise. He would do the same again if he had to, and apologising for something he didn't believe to be wrong would erode any remaining respect I have for him as a guy. My point is that they don't seem concerned with what happened, just what they would like the headline to be. Their parents must be so proud.

"they" meaning journalists? I lost all respect for them yonks ago.

Moving back to Ronaldo, what do you make of his statement? I don't have a whole lot of respect for him either. But I'm impressed by his honesty in the interview.

I know I'm banging on and on about this but the contrast with Adebayor's attitude is marked. Which is a good thing, IMO.

SAF = God

There's a fair rewriting of history going on within these United forums at this moment. You can't find anyone who thought it was all media hype, or that Ronaldo had done nothing wrong. Funny that, because I distinctly remember long arguements about such things...

But whatever. The situation is what it is. We have a top player amongst our ranks for the coming season. Ronaldo will in all likelyhood have his move to Madrid in the near future. Ferguson can probably hold a press conference again without Ronaldo being the sole focus of press attention

It's not ideal, and as Ronaldo himself has said, he's caused it. An apology doesn't solve all of that, and while some reds might be impressed with his crawling, others will remain adament that this player deserves no particular personal admiration

The first time some supporters try to break out Viva at OT will be interesting...

Aye, "they" as in journalists. I shouldn't be surprised by the levels they will stoop to, but I consistently am. More fool me.

Yeah, I dunno what to make of his statement. My gut instinct is he is perhaps trying to calm the waters before he comes back, and that is why he hasn't apologised outright-instead he has gone as far as he can without fully committing himself to the club. Unfortunately, this whole sage will be repeated every summer/window until he leaves. I suppose if you want to have the ringmaster perform for you, you have to endure the circus.

But, feck it. I'm on record as saying that I don't really care what he does, as I support United, not him. He's a great footballer. I don't need to like him as a bloke. I'm glad he's staying from a footballing point of view-which is the only sense I as a fan need to be concerned with. His behaviour doesn't surprise me, it disappoints me. But loyalty is a rare commodity in this game, perhaps it's me that needs to reassess my archaic view of it as a concept.

As for Adebayor, if I were an Arsenal fan, I would be quite annoyed with him now. He looked like he wanted big money, even if it meant he was to move. The disingenuous way he has pandered to them since makes my skin crawl. However in the modern game, the only difference between him and scores of players every year is the media attention he gets, which is entirely disproportionate to what others get.

If I was to pick out one villain(pardon the pun) of the window, it would be Barry. His personal attack on O'Neill to engineer a move was so misguided, and mercenary. O'Neill seems an honourable guy, and one who has done wonders for his career. Pity Gary Barry can't see that.

To be honest this whole thing has left a sour taste because:

a)It's the first time in my lifetime that we have had the best player in the world at United and

b)We simply aren't used to players wanting to leave or treating the club as a stepping stone.

Whilst my opinion of Ronaldo has mellowed now that I have seen his interview there is still a lot of disappointment in me at the way he has behaved. I think immaturity has played a part and it must be fecking hard having people in your ear every day telling you what to do. However, there is no doubt the guy is a fecking big egotist and much of his success has gone to his head big time. That is simply disappointing and has meant he has lost touch with reality a bit. I doubt he will ever regain that or indeed the full trust or support of the fans.

Agree big time but for some reason his shitty tactics has been glossed over. How the feck could someone go to a tabloid and criticise the man that has overseen his huge development into an England International and made him club captain, yet so readily and publicly attack him?

It's the first time I have known any top player at United coming out and saying he wants to play somewhere else - ie implying that another club is a better place to play. It leaves a very bitter taste and I think Ronaldo has lost a lot of respect from fans and maybe from his colleagues as well. Made more so by the fact that he'll be off as soon as the opportunity presents itself.

I guess I have to respect him in that his statement did more to win me back than I thought a statement of his could. Probably because I expected him to issue a statement saying that the saga was all bollocks, he loves United, blah blah blah. But I suppose it is the honesty of his statements (admitting he wanted to go) that I didn't expect.

I still think he handled this dreadfully, and he's still my least favorite United player as a result. If he just would have said all that from the start (at least the parts about Madrid), no problem. But it was always a game with him. Always so vague. "I'll talk about it after Euro", "I'll talk about it in 2-3 days", "You all know what I want".

I think by the time October rolls around, this will seem like ancient news and it will be easier to cheer him on, maybe even hum Viva Ronaldo, which I thought I'd never do again. We'll see.

I can't remember you saying anything that offensive though, but there have been a zillion posts so it may have gotten past me....

I can. He was acting like a cock and a half.

Thank you Sults.

Hopefully the others who complained will see your message amidst all the posts in this thread.

Its going to be really interesting to see and hear what the crowds reaction will be when his name is called out during the pre-match line-up announcement first game back at Old Trafford.

It means squat all in the grander schemes of things. The best player in the world is back home and the armchair muppets will cheer his name after his first goal.

No! not at all! that's complete bollocks on a par with Marca. You chose to read it that way, you were feckin' wrong, tough!

20 K here we come!!!!

So is this the biggest single thread ever in redcafe history?

Woo Hoo!! Thanks, Ronnie!
You bet it is. I think its also the longest thread in FOOTBALL history.

Cristiano Ronaldo transfer saga timeline: What they said
So the Ronaldo summer transfer saga looks to have finally come to a close. We take a look at what was said, and when they said it.

By Mark Ogden
Last Updated: 6:50PM BST 07 Aug 2008

May 1: Ronaldo said: "It is hard to live in Manchester, but it is a great club and I am very happy here."

May 15: Ronaldo said: "I have said a million times I'd love to play in Spain. I feel happy here, but let's see what happens after the Champions League final."

May 22: Hours after helping United to the Champions League title, Ronaldo said: "I never promise anything. I don't promise anything to my mum and I don't promise anything to the Manchester supporters. I want to stay, I want to stay, but the future ... no one knows."

May 23: Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon said: "If a player decides to leave he is unstoppable. Slavery was abolished a long time ago and nobody can prevent a player from moving. If Manchester want to sell him (Ronaldo), we can pay what they ask."

May 25: Reacting to the Ronaldo speculation, United chief executive David Gill said: "Cristiano has a four year contract with us and he will be in a United shirt next season."

May 28: Real Madrid coach Bernd Schuster said: "For the fans, this signing would be a spectacular 'boom', a bit like what we saw with David Beckham. Cristiano Ronaldo is our priority."

June 5: Ronaldo goes public on his desire to play for Real Madrid. He said: "I want to play for Real Madrid, but only if it is true they are eager to pay me and Manchester United what they have been saying they will."

July 10: FIFA president Sepp Blatter said: "In football, there is too much modern slavery. I'm always in favour of protecting the player. If he wants to leave, let him."

July 11: Ronaldo responds to Blatter's comments, saying: "I agree with the statement of the president, he is right."

July 18: After meeting Ronaldo in Lisbon, Sir Alex Ferguson said: "We both made our points of view about where we stand and where the player stands and what I can say is that he will be a Manchester United player next season. That's our stance, he won't be sold."

July 20: Real president Ramon Calderon said: "Ferguson is hard, but it does not matter. Ronaldo will be signed shortly."

August 6: Following Ronaldo's admission that he will stay at United, Ferguson said: "We can put this to bed now. It's finished and the boy is a Manchester United player and that's most important thing."

Well I'm trying my hardest not to Phil, but some people talked such bullshit back then, its hard not to just make that point now!!!

But your right, its unseemly. I shall refrain (unless someone sparks it up again!)

It was a thread full of bullshit because so much was based on fans emotions ........we really had few solid facts and with the media feeding us a daily diet of made up and distorted quotes mixed into recycled and new stories with RM helping it along and Ronaldo not only allowing it but at times adding fuel to it ........ I just trusted Saf to, as always, do what he thinks is best for the team ....... he ain't often wrong.

I had absolute faith in Fergie to sort the situation out, and he has. That was never a problem. It was how big a hole Ronaldo would dig for himself, and how much damage to would cause. Your absolutely right, there was a minefield of media bullshit at the time too. But people were wrong to dismiss it all as bullshit, as events have proved. The truth was there if you wanted to see it, and there to ignore if you didn't want to believe it

Does anyone reckon this thread will be kept alive until next summer when it starts all over again?

We probably still don't know the truth. I don't believe that the same lad who was daft enough to have his head turned, & open his mouth in public about wanting a move, would give that interview. I reckon what we're getting now is the Utd spin to make it easier for the fans to accept all the bollox that's gone on.
