Players do leave an impression on.

Plenty of great players I remember with fondness, especially those players who clearly recognised what a great honour it was to play for Manchester United, and clearly loved the club.

Yeah, there's that.

And there's one or two really, really special players who leave a lasting impression, purely because of their ability.

George Best was a player who probably belongs in the latter category, more than the former. If it's an honour to play for United, you don't turn up to training pissed.

Ronaldo, of course, looks as though he may not belong in the former at all.

Let's start with the team of 58. They put to shame the attitude and loyalties of today's players.

Don't have to go that far back, for us who have only read about that team.

We can look back at players like Hughes, Robbo, Bruce, Irwin, Cantona, Solskjær etc. Or current players like Giggs, Scholes, Neville, Rooney.

Players who appreciate and love the club.

Although they left United for differing reasons I still have a great fondness for Besty, Denis Law, Paul Mcgrath and Norman Whiteside.

I think Tevez could become one of them. Would love it.

Sorry, but you do. That is where loyalties and magic of our great club really started. Does not matter if you never saw them, that is the defining moment of where we are today, its history. Like the kids in thirty years time will say the same about the players of United you have had the privilege to see.
We had to build a whole team after 58 which we did and now we whinge about just one player.

Oh and please, for god's sake, call him El Colorado.

The seed were laid even before that, I'd argue - with the appointment of Sir Matt.

I posted the same content few days back and also in an other forum.

They’ve tapped him up and he has behaved like an utter prat...There is no second thought but if we bend over to Real Madrid, they might come sniffing around for Tevez, Rooney or Anderson in the future.

For Real Madrid, Ronaldo is gold dust on and off the pitch as they are even willing to shell £60M plus to get hold him, they are certain they could make back the investment through marketing.

Our wage bill stands at 43% and could break the 50% barrier as Nani, Anderson probably getting three-fold increase a season down the line plus improved contracts for Vidic, Evra, Rooney and Tevez and Fergie might even go shopping for a striker and a top notch goalie soon.

Ronaldo’s wages standing as it is wont damage the wage bill and also he is worth more on and off the pitch in the next four seasons..more than £60M or £70M that Real Madrid can offer.

With Ronaldo around we might end up with couple of league titles and an European cup in the next four seasons and also his increasing marketing value at the same wage is a bonus. Even if RealMadrid pay £70 or £80 million Ronaldo is worth more considering the success he can bring on the pitch.

Cons: Every transfer window Caledron would do a circus act and Ronnie would sulk and spastics would go bonkers. It shouldn’t bother us if we choose to ignore the nonsense

Bottom-line: Ronaldo has four more years remaining in his contract and let him stay as long as it lasts and go on a Bosman. He wont risk his career by taking on Fergie and ending up in the reserves. United can gain more on and off the pitch if Ronaldo stays and the overall worth is much more than Real Madrid or any other club could offer.

Fergie and Gill should keep mum and get on with the business of strengthening the team. 23 is a young age for any individual to handle fame and money...who knows three years from now on Ronnie's priorities might change could marry a fat lass that hates beaches and finally settle in Manchester.

You are over-estimating the impact ONE player has on a club's revenue/income.

We still haven't had an accurate 2nd opinion on what exactly the question was to which he replied though.
I don't think we need to. Every news outlet in Europe and many others around the world were reporting that he agreed with Blatter's comments that modern day footballers are treated like slaves. He didn't make any attempt to deny those statements for a week. Where were his advisers? Where was his PR team? The world press was reporting that the man agreed with one of the most ignorant, racist comments in years, and he just sits back and lets people believe that? Seriously, does he not have advisers? Such statements could have a very detrimental effect on his marketing, if nothing else. You take any celebrity that sticks their foot in their mouth and within hours their spokespeople have usually issued a press release or statement denying, defending, or clarifying their remark. With so much focus on his marketing, I just have trouble believing that they let such a remark sit, unless they wanted that remark to sink in and see if it caused any movement. There is no reasonable defense for the week it took to claim he was misinterpreted unless they wanted his marks to settle in with certain people (fans, the club, etc.).

The club is called MANCHESTER UNITED not Ronaldo United

I grew up idolising Paul McGrath more than any other footballer on the planet.

Have you read his autobiography? Brilliant read but incredibly bleak.

Not read the autobiography yet, but have made a note in my mind to buy one.

An incredible player. I would rate him the best centre half I have ever seen in a United shirt, despite all his problems...

You are over-estimating the impact ONE player has on a club's revenue/income.

United are not a one man team but he is a decisive footballer very hard to replace. We are bothered about the club and the success not how long an individual would stay commited. Lets enjoy the run as long as it lasts

Alongside Rio.

You're conflating 2 different issues: the length of time it took to issue a rebuttal, and the accuracy of the portrayal of his remarks.

You maintain that because it took him a few days to isssue a rebuttal it must have been a reasonable portrayal - but there really isn't any justification for this conclusion.

Ronaldo wasn't appearing in the press much at that point - so he claimed he was misrepresented relatively quickly.

It is therefore still relevant to ask to what exactly Ronaldo believed he was agreeing. Remember that this is probably the only actual c*ntish remark directly attributed to him throughout the whole summer so it becomes rather important.

As someone criticising Blatter pointed out (elsewhere), if he had intended to refer to African players being exploited with lousy contracts in Europe when they didn't realise the relative costs of living he'd have been bang on the money. Who knows with what variant of 'player power' Ronaldo felt he was agreeing - unless we know the questions he actually heard?

You are still over-estimating ONE player's impact on a club's revenue.

We're supporting United in an era where the financial security of the club is all about Marketing the "brand", like it or not.

The kind of appeal that Ronaldo is developing globally - at such a young age - means that it's almost impossible to over-estimate exactly how valuable he might be.

(Forgive me, Bil Hicks, for I have sinned)

It is impossible to assess how much one player is worth revenue-wise for a club.

Manchester United is such a huge club, globally, that one player will have little impact on the clubs revenue.

I think that we need to recognise the complexities involved in the influence of players on our revenue.

1 Our merchandise income is largely not directly affected by month to month sales since we receive a fixed sum for much of it. Nike have gambled that they will recoup that part of their sponsorship money in their profits - we receive that part no matter what.

2 Our marketablility will determine how much we receive in this type of revenue next time we negotiate a contract.

3 This will depend on how 'attractive' our players are, and how attractive the team are (how much we win / football we play etc.).

4 Good players bring success which contributes through '3' as well as directly in prize money.

Ronaldo is good business on all counts.

Yes, but he is just part of a team full of stars and populare players, playing for possible the most famous club in the world.

Nike, AIG and the other companies sponsoring us does it for the exposure and business opportunities Manchester United give them. This exposure and business opportunities are very little dependent on one single player, more on performance, TV time etc.

Manchester United, with or without Ronaldo will still be competing for honours and hence most games (if not all) will be televised around the world.
