Beckham adds his two cents

You should stay at Manchester United, Beckham tells Ronaldo

David Beckham has urged Cristiano Ronaldo to snub Real Madrid and stay at Manchester United.

The Spanish champions are desperate to make the winger their big summer signing and Ronaldo has promised: “In two to three days I will announce my decision.”

Real’s bid for Ronaldo mirrors their pursuit of David Beckham in 2003, which culminated in the then United midfielder moving to the Bernabeu for £25million.

Although Beckham spent four years in Spain, winning the league title in his final season, he believes Ronaldo, 23, would be wrong to make the same switch.

The England captain said: “Real are one of the great clubs but he’s at the right club at the moment and should stay there.

"People there will protect him and as a United fan I hope he stays.”

Sir Alex Ferguson said United’s owners, the Glazer family, are determined to keep Ronaldo no matter how much Real offered.

“Their attitude is not to give in to these people,” said Ferguson.

Becks is a class act. Never once heard him say anything negative about United.

I've always loved Becks

United lad, that's what I like to see

I'm gonna bump this, as it got lost in the flood of posts yesterday. Has anything actually happened to warrant such a major shift of opinion on this?

I mean, has anybody actually seen or heard Ronaldo say anything to suggest him leaving is even a possiblity?

I think Fergie's comments yesterday were a big worry.

I think Fergie's comments yesterday were a big worry.

Worry or not. They seem to have finally got through to that cnut, Calderon, who seems to be starting a face-saving exercise.

Madrid plan for life without Ronaldo
by Tom Kell, 02 June 2008
He might not have thrown the towel in altogether, but Real Madrid president Roman Calderon insists that it will not be the end of the world if Cristiano Ronaldo cannot be lured away from Manchester United.

The Portuguese winger has done little to quell suggestions he will be tempted to the Spanish capital, but has hinted that definitive news on his future will be forthcoming within the next 48 hours.

United continue to stand firm on the matter, with Sir Alex Ferguson even claiming he would rather let Ronaldo rot in the reserves than suffer the ignominy of having to let him leave.

Calderon has consistently been at the forefront of Madrid’s boldness over being able to secure the player, but his stance now appears to be softening.

"We would like to have a player like Cristiano, but if he does not sign for us then it would not be a major problem," he told Marca.

"The club has said that they do not want to sell him and we cannot keep going back.

"One has to know when to stop these things in order to avoid the frustration that the fans could feel.

"His club have to want to and if they want to negotiate with Madrid or any other club then they will."

I haven't really been following this over the last couple of days but I'm sure Ronaldo said only last week and he was happy at United and wanted to stay and would only go after he had achieved a legendary status...what's changed? A players not going to say that one week and come out with something else the next? Not if wants to maintain his credibility anyway!

Ok, I'm getting the horn now:

Real Madrid move to end speculation over Manchester United striker Cristiano Ronaldo

Real Madrid president Ramón Calderón has said that he wants to end speculation about the future of Manchester United striker Cristiano Ronaldo.

Speaking to the Madrid-based newspaper La Marca, Calderón, said: "The club [Manchester United] has said that they are not going to sell, and we shouldn't worry about it any further."

No deal: Ramón Calderón does not want to mislead Real fans
Ronaldo has been repeatedly linked to the Spanish club over recent weeks, leading Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United to consider reporting Real to Fifa for attempting to unsettle the player.

However, Calderón seemed keen to put an end to speculation over Ronaldo's future in his latest interview. "It should be known when this type of operation is over so the fans don't get frustrated," he said.

La Marca suggested Calderón wanted to avoid a situation similar to the Kaka scenario in 2006. Press reports said AC Milan-based Brazilian Kaka was on the verge of signing for the Spanish club, only for the deal to fall through.

"His [Ronaldo's] club has to make their intentions clear, and if they want to do business with Madrid, or with another club, they will do so," Calderónsaid.

In the meantime, the Portugal manager Luiz Felipe Scolari has added his voice to the saga, effectively encouraging his young protégé to join the Spanish side.

"We've talked a lot," he said. "In football, you don't live on memories. You take the opportunities that come along because if you let them pass you by, you'll probably never get them again."

Their playing on the line that Scolari scouted. The thing about the chance of a lifetime.

Its all bollocks tho. Lets see what the player says in two days. Im confident he's staying.

Im one of his biggest fans, and I really appreciate everything he's done for us, and he's done a lot. But he should show a little bit of respect and stop being such a media whore.

If he stays at United, I think its because he cares, but loves the attention, which is a bit annoying, and he should grow up.

If he leaves, it means he really wanted to leave all this time, but was contemplating it, I will still consider him a Man United legend, but I sencerly hope he finds it difficult at Madrid, him leaving sends out a bit of a negative message about the comparisions between Man United and Real Madrid, it will look like we are a stage until he becomes the best in the world, then the biggest club in the world takes him. Its a disgusting situation. He should understand that he can help, along with the new group of players, make United the undoubted best team in the world for years to come, it can be something really special. If he can't see that, then its his problem, and we will find a replacement as hard as it may seem, we are Man United, the kings of europe.

Having said all that, Im confident he's not leaving.

I reckon's he's staying.

But I keep changing my mind every 24 hours.

Oh and I've got a tight t shirt on, by th way.

I think Ronaldo doesn't want to leave, all he wants is to leave an impression to Real Madrid he can't really leave - like Kaka's case. Tell us, where is the transfer request, or his unhappiness at United? He is always smiling and prancing around with his buddies.

I keep changing my t shirt every 24 hours, too.

But if Ronaldo goes, we should get Kaka, Messi, Benezema and Maradona.

He should be making his "announcement" today isn't it? Couple of sources say so . Quaresma already come out and said he wants to leave FC Porto.

I really doubt Ronaldo will want to leave United. He just loves the media attention, and hopefully all this bollocks can be put to bed AT LEAST for this summer.

A last ditch-attempt by Real Madrid?

ROBINHO REVEALS RONALDO PROPOSAL

Here is the same interview from a more reputable source;

Prem giants chasing Robinho
Interest growing in Brazilian playmaker
By Patricio Figueroa Last updated: 2nd June 2008

The Brazilian international has spent three years with Spanish giants Real Madrid, but has failed to hold down a regular first-team spot at Santiago Bernabeu.

He was widely touted as the 'new Pele' after bursting onto the scene as a teenager with Santos, but has struggled to live up to that billing since moving to Europe.

However, at just 24-years-old, time is still on his side and a move away from Los Blancos could help to reinvigorate his career.

The playmaker is currently away on international duty preparing for 2010 World Cup qualifiers, but has taken time out to admit that he has received approaches from two of the Premier League's top clubs.

"I have never hidden away my wish to remain at Real Madrid, but if the interest is serious I will have no problem leaving Real Madrid as the interest from Manchester United and Chelsea makes me very proud," Robinho told the Brazilian press.

No mention of Ronaldo whatsoever. If Robinho had mentioned Ronaldo, Sky Sports would have made it their lead story.

Yes, there's absolutely nothing to these "rumours". That's why Quieroz is raving like a loon to the Portuguese press, and Ferguson is the papers saying that the owners are ready to let him rot in the reserves rather than sell against their will.

Perhaps our coaching staff are just on a "wind-up" of their own.

making a straw man and ignoring my real argument doesn't make yours valid, mate.

we know Madrid is trying to unsettle the player via the press, hence the actions of SAF and CQ. that's not necessarily to say that they've succeeded, only that we are royally pissed at their lack of ethical conduct. basically, what those press clippings have tried to do is try and put a spin on things in a way guaranteed to garner more headlines. in fact, i defy you to read through those articles and find one snippet of new information that may lead to their conclusions - conclusions that Caftards came to in their panicked state a full 24 hours earlier.

the press are just on the outside looking in, like the rest of us bar Ronaldo and his closest confidants.

so do spare me your righteous indignation. it's wasted on me.

Scolari has been quoted as telling Ronnie to go to Real now as he may not get another chance.
Ronnie's godfarter said that Ronnie had told him that he was going to Real and would announce it after the Euros.
Otherwise all is normal.

those were not Scolari's words. that was what the press interpreted it to mean. he is preparing Portugal for the Euros, and asked Ronaldo to forget his CL and Prem triumphs.

Shhh, don't disturb his cosy naive little world, he won't appreciate it if you do

People have their heads in the sand if they're not at least worried or upset about events of the last few days or so. When have you ever seen Ferguson talk about allowing one of his star players to rot in the reserves?! It's an unbelievable statement. Might be just the ticket for Ronaldo's current arrogance too

it's my understanding that that statement was made in reponse to the query that the Glazers might want to cash in on the massive asset that is Ronaldo given our debt situation and what was reported in the Spanish press about Madrid going over SAF's head. but as usual, Brad, in this matter only hyperbole and massive drama-queenery (is that even a word? - suits anyway) will do.

I'm not reading all them pages. Have we offered him a new contract or not?

This is never going to end. I'm honestly getting disgusted with Ronaldo. He's what? 23 now. How many of us have to make decisions for ourselves at 12 let alone 23...is he such a puppet that he can change his mind from one moment to the next depending on who he is talking too/who influences him.

To be honest I couldn't give a feck how good he is, no spine and that kind of attitude is terrible for a team atmosphere.

tbh, i reckon he made up his mind a while ago. this is just him being a drama queen and attention whore all rolled up in one. very, very annoying, unnecessary and rather disrespectful. and the press are lapping it up, with the Caftards shitting bricks and making fools of themselves.

i agree with the team atmosphere bit. if he's getting to the point where he thinks he is as big as the club, or is the club, then we'd be wise to move him on. but not until next season's over. ;)

Why should we? He has four years to go on his current contract.

Yeah, I agree. But I thought it was reported that there was some image rights issue with his new contract, hence my question. I've probably just been tribalfootballed.

Which way?

Im in a happy mood tonight so I glass is half empty and I think he will stay.

You can see he absolutely loves Nani and Andershow. Especially Nani. They are fecking wankers to be fair  That video of them walking around the motel was bizarre. Singing championes championes isnt exactly the sign of somebody who wants to feck off. I cant see him walking out on them after 1 season.

Plus I doubt Fergie will let him go. Matter of principle really.

I think we should actually, no relation to the Madrid link, he performed unbelievably well, and Sir Alex believes United should show the performing player that his work is well monitored and respected.
