The Daily Express have there say:

RONALDO CLOSE TO WALKING OUT ON UNITED

CRISTIANO RONALDO hinted last night that he is ready to drop a transfer bombshell on Manchester United this week.

Portugal winger Ronaldo’s latest failure to clarify his position is fuelling fears at Old Trafford that he has been swayed by Real Madrid’s persistent attempts to entice him to Spain and could be on the brink of demanding a move after five years in England when he has won every major trophy.

After his country’s 2-0 win over Georgia in their final warm-up before Euro 2008, Ronaldo replied to questions about his future by saying: “Let’s see, I hope there will be news soon. In two to three days I will announce my decision.” Those 19 words will only serve to deepen Sir Alex Ferguson’s concern that his star player and leading goalscorer wants to quit, with Real poised to make a world-record £100million offer.

Ronaldo, 23, has had several opportunities since the Champions League final victory over Chelsea to dismiss Real’s interest and pledge his future to United, but he has refused to take them.

Now Ferguson is hardening his stance. Chief executive David Gill has already made it clear United will refuse to allow Ronaldo – who is one year into a five-year contract worth £120,000 a week – to use Real’s interest to force United into offering him an improved deal.

And Ferguson insists he has sought the backing of the Glazer family to let Ronaldo rot on the sidelines if he asks for a move rather than sell him. “I’ve had a couple of meetings with the Glazers,” he said.

“Their attitude is, ‘To hell with them [Real]’. They would sit a player in the stand, no doubt about it, just to prove a point. Not to give in to these people. They have got balls, I can tell you. I’ve been delighted with them in that respect.”

feck this shit

Looks like he could well be off

Take the money and buy a quality replacement

"In two to three days I will announce my decision"

For feck sake. Just tell us now, whether you want to stay, or feck off. Stop making such a big deal of it.

Provisions should be written into player contracts that say:
- Salary adjustments will not be made until, say 2 or 3 years into contract
- Renewal of contract, and any other period related negotiations, will not be entered into until the final year of the contract, or maybe the penultimate year.

Or something like that - at this point in time, i see no point in contracts.

That won't work if you want players to actually sign contracts.

That's the thing though, he's clearly loving this situation. His ego is getting bigger and bigger by the day, and he's milking it for all it's worth.

If it happens Real need to give us straight cash, not any of their second rate players. Unless it is someone Fergie is generally interested in but only Casillas and Ramos would get in our first team in my opinion.

oh noes! ronaldo and his mini me seen shopping in madrid :nervous:

Cristiano Ronaldo announced that he will make a decision on his future in the next three days and will inform us about it by Wednesday. Why can't he just stop the speculation flowing, I don't know.

Of course I have a few thoughts. Ronaldo himself said it many times that he's happy in Manchester, he wants to be a legend here and he wants to stay for many years now. Why does he now refuse to openly commit himself in the face of the rumours and the imminent tug of war between United and Real Madrid? Because of money, perhaps.

His agents might have advised him to fuel the uncertainty, the doubt in order to achieve better terms on a possible new contract despite the fact that his existing one is valid until 2012.

He will now make a decision, he says. It seems - and it is something that Real Madrid do not seem to realise, whatever Calderon says - his future is not in his own or Real Madrid's hands. United just won't let him go.

The angry statement concerning the perceivedly illegal activities of the Spanish giants spoke volumes: stop or else there will be trouble. It reminded me, if you don't mind a little wandering into the world of literature, of a scene in the 'Hitchiker'S Guide to the Galaxy': in the Restaurant at the End of the Universe, Ford Prefect approaches an old friend only to be told by the bodyguard that 'I am Mr. Desiato's bodyguard. I am responsible for his body but I'm not responsible for yours. So take it away before it gets damaged'.

My point is that Sir Alex Ferguson only reiterated the club's obvious stance today: Ronaldo goes nowhere, not least because of principles. We do not sell our best players at the peak of their careers. The boss met the Glazers who are likely to gain some sympathy at last if they manage to keep Ronaldo.

'Their attitude is 'to hell with them', revealed Fergie.

'Trust me, they'd rather have him sitting in the stands than sell him, just to prove a point.'

It's quite straightforward. Of course it's in neither parties' interest to get Ronaldo banished to the stands and it won't happen. What will happen is simple: he'll start and finish next season in the Red shirt of Manchester United.

Seems fair comment that. Since when did adding a few extra grand to an already enormously inflated paycheck take precedence over class and dignity though? Very sad indeed. I look forward to the situation being resolved 'in a couple of days' then

exactly - announcement my arse.

He is not in the position to make announcements with four years on his contract remaining and should get a kick up the arse when he returns

''I hope there will be news soon'' What does that mean? a decision will be made? its not his decision to leave though is it.
the only decision i can see he can make is to announce that hes gonna stay for years and to tell madrid to forget him. Surely.

Telegraph. Comment at the end is interesting.

Cristiano Ronaldo decision on his Manchester United future is imminent, says midfielder

As thousands of citizens of a small Swiss town came on to the streets to welcome Cristiano Ronaldo into their midst, the player said he would decide on his future with Manchester United "in the next two or three days".

The 23-year-old arrived with the rest of the Portugal side at their Euro 2008 base at Neuchatel, whose streets were a blaze of Portuguese flags.
sfnman102.jpg

Centre of attention: Cristiano Ronaldo will decide on his Old Trafford future "in the next two or three days"

As he pondered his decision, Ronaldo would be aware of a threat from Manchester United's owners, the Glazer family, that they would drop him from the squad completely, rather than do a deal with Real Madrid.
The Manchester United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, who admits that Ronaldo will have "a serious decision to make on his future" in three years time, said: "I have had a couple of meetings with the Glazers
Their attitude is: 'To hell with them (Madrid)'. They would sit the player in the stands just to prove a point that they will not give in to these people. They have got balls, I can tell you. I have been delighted with them in that respect."
It is, however, not just Madrid's constant inducements that have stretched Ronaldo's relationship with his employers. At no time has the player given a concrete assurance that he will honour a contract that still has four years to run.

Even when questioned after Portugal's 2-0 victory over Georgia at the weekend, he told reporters: "Let us see, I hope there will be news soon. In the next two or three days I will announce my decision."
The pressure has not been solely from Madrid. Ronaldo's own family have long argued that he should quit Manchester for Spain and fulfil a boyhood ambition by playing in the Bernabeu.
Ronaldo is widely expected to agree to remain at Old Trafford, perhaps with an improved contract - which may be the point of it all.
However, whatever threats Ferguson makes on the Glazers behalf, there is not the slightest chance of them being carried out for any length of time.
The Glazers, perhaps the most money-conscious owners in the Premier League, would not want a £50 million asset rotting away in the reserves. And, as Ferguson discovered when attempting to sell David Beckham to Barcelona: If a player wants to go to Real Madrid, then he goes.

IF this is true, it would mean Ronaldo has refused to even tell Fergie and Carlos his 'plans', which, I'm afraid, is inexcusableness, and probably the most selfish thing he could do. It also shows just how much he thinks of himself, and how big his ego is.

Whatever his decision, my opinion of him has been tainted, beyond repair, and I'm sure I'm not the only United fan to feel this way, which is a massive shame, as Ronaldo really has, or had, everything to become a true legend at this club, up there with the likes of Giggs, and Scholes, but ultimately, his actions are going to deny him this.

What's your opinion about Keane and Ferdinand then? Both did similar things..

Football fans are fickle. Everyone on this thread will love him again if he scores 40 goals next season. To be honest, I really don't care what he says. He'd be an idiot to move but if he stays and continues to perform that'd be fantastic. Football is played on the pitch.

maybe we are overreacting. if i recall correct, whenever direct questions have been asked, the answer is "i'm staying". its just indirect questions where ronnie seems abit vague like "are you moving to spain", "what about your future", etc.

As i see it, when he's been asked directly, "are you staying", its always been "yes".

Press making a big deal out of nothing again?

Maybe - it sells papers after all.

Speak for yourself.
You don't seem too concerned about all this. Good for you.

United had to wait a year for Hargreaves and he wasn't in Bayern's reserves in the meantime. Unless his price went down because of the wait, it was a good move by Bayern. I don't see what United would gain by selling Ronaldo this summer as opposed to keeping him for another year.

I'm pretty sure this is just him trying to get a better contract.

Whatever transpires over the next week or so i dont want to see ronaldo rot in the reserves for a whole season. im not saying that as a united fan and because we'd miss him as a player. im saying that as it would be cruel to ronaldo, as hes given his all to us so far.
C'mon peeps, hes won: 2 premierships, the fa cup, champions league the league cup, charity shield. and numerous personal awards. hes always wanted to play for them and the weather is atrocious here, if he really wants to go then we should let him. we should stitch the spanish cnuts for all their worth though obviously.

I, like you all think it would be better for him to stay as united is the place to be - but we shouldnt forcibly keep a player who doesnt want to be here. and as we all know united will march on.

(appologies for the sobering honesty there)

27 May 2008

Cristiano Ronaldo has reiterated he is happy at Manchester United and ‘would love to continue’ at Old Trafford.

The Portugal winger has been persistently linked with Real Madrid by the Spanish media and has not helped quell the speculation by announcing he would make a decision on his future shortly.

In an interview with Portuguese newspaper Publico, the 23-year-old confirmed he would like to play in Spain one day but that he is currently satisfied with life in England.

‘There is nothing certain at the moment,’ Ronaldo said. ‘The press always make stories about interest from other teams, not only from Madrid, also from Barcelona.

‘On one hand it’s good and means that they know your value as a player and think you can be a good reinforcement for other teams. But my head is in Manchester Because it is the club that, at the moment, puts me in the best condition and that I’m happy at.

‘Now, as I have said many times, only God knows the future. I have never hid from anyone that I would like to play in Spain one day. It’s a dream, but sometimes dreams don’t happen.

‘I can guarantee that I am happy at Manchester United and that I would love to continue.’

Probably posted but it is the most important interview.

basically, it's precisely the same speculation as what's on here to begin with. bar the fact it's a professional paper, there's no difference.

sometimes i weep at the gullibility of folks on here.
Yes, there's absolutely nothing to these "rumours". That's why Quieroz is raving like a loon to the Portuguese press, and Ferguson is the papers saying that the owners are ready to let him rot in the reserves rather than sell against their will.

Perhaps our coaching staff are just on a "wind-up" of their own.

Scolari and his godfather have spoken since then. Neither very good.

I expect Fergie to be in Switzerland now talking to Ronnie face to face.

Scolari wants him to leave ?? Why the hell would Scolari talk to his godfather.

Scolari has been quoted as telling Ronnie to go to Real now as he may not get another chance.
Ronnie's godfarter said that Ronnie had told him that he was going to Real and would announce it after the Euros.
Otherwise all is normal.

Shhh, don't disturb his cosy naive little world, he won't appreciate it if you do

People have their heads in the sand if they're not at least worried or upset about events of the last few days or so. When have you ever seen Ferguson talk about allowing one of his star players to rot in the reserves?! It's an unbelievable statement. Might be just the ticket for Ronaldo's current arrogance too

Scolari didn't say what he was talking about when he made those comments about only having one chance and taking it. It could've three scenarios which are (1) portugal winning the euro, (2) Winning a lot things at united (3) Going to Real. The media have just said his quotes in a way to make it seem as though he is talking about Madrid.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere on here that Fergie made those quotes about rotting in the reserves when he was asked by a reporter how good the glazers are in terms of their ownership and the debt situation and he said that they had money that they didn't have to sell players and used ronaldo as an example.

Saw that too but 9 out of 10 of the media have taken it to mean Go to Real now. Scolari is a greater personal friend to Ronnie than Fergie is. I imagine he would have a greater influence on him.

I cant believe people are still trying to pretend their is no problem at all in this thread. He just wants a new contract etc... even if that was true you would be happy about the way he has gone about it? Ridiculous.

Is he? I didn't know that. I always thought that Fergie and CQ had a stronger relationship with ronaldo than Scolari. As for the media mentioning it to mean real madrid, I think they do so that they can sell more papers. But then again I could be wrong.
