Latest Guardian take...

Cristiano Ronaldo has boldly declared that he will not mind upsetting Sir Alex Ferguson if it helps him to get the transfer he desperately craves from Manchester United to Real Madrid. Ronaldo plans to release a public statement this weekend in which he will detail his plans and, in an admission that will incense Ferguson, he revealed last night that Luiz Felipe Scolari, the new Chelsea manager, had advised him to leave Old Trafford.
"It is a dream, a step forward, you can call it what you want," Ronaldo replied when asked directly what it would be like to play at the Bernabéu. "For me it is a great opportunity and, as Scolari says, that train passes by only once and we have to take advantage of it."

Whether it was a slip on his part or an intended insult we cannot know for certain, but it has the potential to be taken badly from our PoV.

I honestly think United could outprice Madrid for Ronaldo

Id rather see us get 20m + 2 players (Robinho and Sneijder). The last thing I would like to see is other clubs asking ridiculous amounts of money for their players.

Guess we're close to confirming Ronnie's intentions.

Saturday, Sunday ? Holding my breath.....

A great player...But his handling of the situation is SUCK:mad:! His ego has been inflated tenfold. Someone has to keep his in check.Playing fire by fire and flirting non-stop won't get anything done, but bring distraction to both the club and the country he represents:annoyed:. It would be a karma if he goes and falls from grace.

Regardless of what Ronaldo's plans are, I believe the ball is in Manchester United's court. He has got 4 years left on his contract, we do not need to sell.
Do not entertain meeting anybody from Real..just tell them to feck off!! As for Ronaldo, I guess we all know he is a unique talent...if we want to keep him, the club has got to somehow recognise him as one of the best in the world and adjust his pay accordingly. That might keep him happy for another couple of years and he can bugger off to Real or Timbuktu when we are done with him.

Any football fan who didn't support United always said he's the type of player they would love to slap, there's the wink, the diving and his major ego I have to agree with and I'm sorry to say I would love to give him a stinging slap accross his smug face. I want him to go now, and I want us to play RM in the champions final and give them a sound beating.

I think we'll drag the saga out over the Summer, all the while insisting we won't sell while quietly doing our transfer dealings in the background. Then, after we've bought everyone we want to buy, we'll finally accept Madrid's offer. Other selling clubs might have an inkling about what we're going to do, but until we finally send Ronaldo packing they won't be able to hold his transfer fee over our heads.

Also, judging by his comments about Ronaldo, I doubt Sneijder wants to leave Spain to come here; but I like your idea.

Won't work......Read this from the Guardian. Lays it out better than I could. It will give you a good idea of what comes next.

This is a good article to read.....lays out the next steps.....

Why Cristiano Ronaldo will win Real battle

Patrick Foster

Manchester United will be virtually powerless to prevent Cristiano Ronaldo from leaving the club if he has his heart set on a move to Real Madrid, football agents and employment lawyers said yesterday.
He could follow the path of players who want to wriggle out of a contract by adopting a well-worn strategy, Barry Silkman, the football agent, said. That involves grinding the club down with transfer requests and leaks to the press until they buckle.
“You would just keep knocking on the door and drive them mad,” Silkman said. “You tell them you are not happy. You'd get bits in the press. You just basically have to drive them mad by keeping on knocking on the manager's door and phoning them up.
“The agent would phone up the manager and say that his player really didn't want to be at the club any more and the player would keep going to the manager and say he wanted a move. The manager knows that if a player is not happy you can only do so much to keep them.”
So short of selling Ronaldo, United will be left with the option of either fielding an unmotivated player in the first team or continuing to pay him £120,000 a week to stew in the reserves on a period of gardening leave. But even that has its legal pitfalls, James Davies, one of the country's leading employment lawyers, said.

Davies, joint head of the employment and incentives department at Lewis Silkin, the London-based law firm, said: “Basic employment law provision would be that if he were to walk out on his contract, he would be in breach and Manchester United could try to hold him to it by forcing him to honour it.
“They could say that they require him to play, or threaten to put him on gardening leave, by sticking him in the reserves. The problem with that is that you're paying the player a fortune and if they don't want to stay, the pressure is strong to let him go because you will get millions of pounds and you won't have to pay his wage.
“If they did want to stick him in the reserves, the question of how long you can put an employee on gardening leave for is not clear, legally. Ronaldo could say that his skills will atrophy if he doesn't get to play at the top level, or that he has a right to play, so he could sue. That is a tough point of employment law. At the end of the day, these situations usually result in the player going.”
If Ronaldo were to refuse to turn out for Manchester United, the club could try to sue him for losses they suffered as a result of his actions, Davies said. But it is not clear how they would proceed. He added: “How do you measure that? Could you persuade a court that if a particular player had played, the club would have won a particular game or thousands more paying spectators would have turned up? How can you measure the loss?
“Deals are always done because nobody wins by seeking to enforce the contract, because of the vast sums of money at stake and the diminishing returns on the asset - the player. In practice, it is highly likely he'll go.”
In the past, some players desperate for a transfer have resorted to more unorthodox means of protest. Pierre van Hooijdonk, the former Holland forward, went on strike before the beginning of the 1998 season, refusing to return to Nottingham Forest. When he eventually saw sense and came back to the club, he was shunned by his team-mates. Chelsea claimed that William Gallas threatened to score an own goal if he was prevented from leaving the club, in 2006.
Silkman said: “I think Cristiano is too much of a professional to try to go on strike or anything like that. You've got to remember that no one has come out with cast-iron proof that he wants a move. But if a player does want out, the key is just to drive the club mad until they have to sell him.”

A football agent's guide to getting out of your contract
i) Ask for a meeting with the manager and say that you want to move
ii) Ask your agent to ring the manager to tell him that you want to move
iii) Leak stories to the newspapers, saying that you want to move
iv) Repeat the above three steps until the club agrees to sell
v) At no stage should you threaten to go on strike or score an own goal

It could just as easily be a poor translation.

I think Ronaldo cares about what United fans think, it's just that he doesn't realise the effect his actions are actually having on our opinions of him.

I honestly think United could outprice Madrid for Ronaldo

If we so wished, though as i said a few pages back at what cost in terms of the unity of the squad and the precedent that it woudl set in the future? An improved image rights deal perhaps, but beyond that, no.

Guess we're close to confirming Ronnie's intentions.

Saturday, Sunday ? Holding my breath.....

Yes, i wonder how it will reach us this time, doesn't sound like it will be through the club, maybe he'll opt for Marca? ;)

If it is released Saturday afternoon or early evening i'll miss all the immediate reaction :(, i'm off to see a boy who was both a king and a god, and not be waiting to hear the words of someone who thinks that he is.

Regarding the piece from the Guardian, I think we all know better than to believe a journalist's version of events but then again, it's not difficult to believe, is it?

The whole thing is a farce and is precisely the point of what's being done, that 'it's not difficult to believe'. The atmosphere has been created by the press emanating from Madrid and Marca, building all this up and, to my mind, they're now moving to the 'assumptive close', i.e. we know he's going as with Neil Cuntface's bit and now this. But do we know? No, we don't. This assumption is pure press creation and speculation of the worst and most feeble kind - the 'he said, she said' bit. Proof? Audio transcript? Transfer request? offer from Madrid? eh, not a sign! Just more 'he said, she said' crap and they'll have the proof, eh, manana ,maybe?

Clubs are not stupid Shotgun. They know that we may be selling Ronaldo and they know that that would mean loads of cash in our pockets. They will not sell on cheap.

Regarding Sneijder rest assured, if we make him an important factor in our deals, then we would get him. Real are efficient in offloading players as they are in getting them.

I hate to break this to you Nick, but the pharaohs weren't really gods. Zeus'll have your head for saying that.

BTW according to the media we had already moved for a 23 yr old Japanese winger known as Sasuke Uchiha. Apparently he is renowned for his electric pace, dribbling and vision.

You're right, but as long as Gill and Ferguson continue their bluster about sending Ronaldo to the stands and not selling players unless they absolutely want to, nobody can be sure how much money we'll have. I'm sure prices will be inflated above their usual level, but if we sell late in he Summer it'll help to keep prices down a little. Ultimately though, we're Manchester united, so prices are alway going to be higher than normal.

They will get worse. Remember the year we sold Stam? We had three targets in mind (one of them was Ayala) whom we didnt get because their prices shot up. We solved it once and for all with the signing of Ferdinand which costed us 30m.

I can't recall anything like this ever happening in the United fold before. How strange for us to be turning down E100M with not a second thought. How strange for our best player wanting to leave us. Manchester United.
The world is caving in.
We're all really gonna die.

Which is why we should make our purchases quickly and make our sales late.

 You're going to end up in an asylum by the time this is over.

WoW, I hope this story will have a end soon...I got to say he got some EGO that boy ronaldo...Will be fun in some years time when he sucks in la liga...

uhm. Robinho or Sneijder? who to perfer?

Based on what?

I know what you're saying mate but his silence, even if everything else is bullshit, speaks volumes

far too many quotes have been made by Madrid people and his family for it not to be true. Yep. All orchestrated but sure as eggs is eggs he's trying it on.

The last 37 pages of the most comprehensive discussion on the Ronaldo saga in the World.

Oh, right. I thought for a second you had conclusive proof, you know, boring old things like transfer requests, offers, audio transcripts. I know they pale into insigficance next to press and Cafe speculation but I suppose I'm just a bit of a cynic. Must get out more.

:) All in the context of the time and a nation, and seeing as it is a representation of Minerva that is not too fa from where i sit typing, it is probably she who'll be wanting to give me a slap. lol

True clubs may be kept slightly in the dark through delaying the sale till late on in the summer, but then we'd be attacked on the opposite flank by an ever growing enemy, a lack of time. Sellers would have us right where they wanted us. So we'll take a hit either way if he goes, it is a careful balancing act for somebody.

We disect every piece of information we can get hold of from any source. A lot of it bogus stuff too. But based on summations and actually the best discussion I've ever seen on the caf (mixed in with plenty muppetry) and when the total press and media are totally convinced I lean very heavily to believing what they are all saying. As I'm sure United do. I think the almost 700,000 views show the interest in this thread.
Oh, and all that you're looking for will be here very shortly....this weekend if you can believe Ronnie, or his interviewer, or his goldfish. That's chapter two.

Sure, no smoke without fire, but what's the fire? I can't see any fact other than he's said he'd like to play for Real at some stage. And facts seem to be in short supply over this saga. Plenty of promises, mind. I read nothing into his silence other than not wanting to upset either club. Tries to keep his trap shut and won't be drawn. It's other people that 'read' into it for whatever agenda they have.(usually anti us) He's not a very bright guy and a bit of a weak character as well as appearing impressionable. He's not intellectually capable of 'playing' the world. The press know all this and are pushing strongly -hence the assumptive close.

Mind you, if we think this is tedious, wait for the Scolari build up, the 'master' who'll 'defeat' Fergie as they did initially with Wenger and Mourinho. It's all predictable.

Fine, but I prefer to rely on founded and substantiated facts. At the moment, I can't see any. So from my position and, evidently Fergie's and the clubs, there's no news.
