Real Madrid want Cristiano Ronaldo to declare his interest in a move to Santiago Bernabeu before opening talks with Manchester United.

The on-going transfer saga over the future of the prodigiously gifted Portugal international has dominated the headlines in recent weeks.

Real have made no secret of their admiration for Ronaldo, with United responding by reporting the Spanish champions to Fifa for their actions, although the world governing body will not be taking any formal action.

Ronaldo has done little to quell the speculation, but insists he will not make any decision over his future until after Euro 2008, with Portugal facing Germany in the opening quarter-final clash.

Agreement

Now Real claim they are waiting for Ronaldo to give them the green light to open transfer negotiations with the Old Trafford outfit.

"We are waiting for Ronaldo to say something, and as soon as he says he wants to play for Real Madrid there will be conversations between the two clubs," Real's director general of the presidency Miguel Angel Arroyo told Marca.

"We would willingly reach an agreement with Manchester United if it is possible, that is to say, if they want to sell and if the price was affordable."

Speculation

If Ronaldo does eventually move to Real, he will be one of a limited number of summer signings, with the club not planning a major summer overhaul.

"Things are a little dependent on what happens at Euro 2008. There is a lot of speculation but that is normal," Real coach Bernd Schuster told Spanish radio station Cope.

"I have already said there will be very few new faces."

most boring transfer saga ever!

You've got to laugh at how absurd the whole thing is. We've no proof of Real madrid tapping anyone up.....meh....what do they take us for?

So they do know a holy feck about Ronaldo's plans. Good.

Laughable... Even his agent wants him to stay. Source...er....Daily Mail....so it must be true.

Never known an agent to turn down th opportunity for cash.

it's been reported in a few places about his agent not being particularly keen on him moving to Madrid.

Although it's probably just as made up as the rest of the stuff it's more believable because it doesn't join in with all the crap about him moving. One article I read mentioned how Mendes does not want any bad feeling with Manchester United because it would make it difficult to do business with them again.

They are backing off their tough stance, now they have unsettled the player and have a small chance of signing him they've suddenly realized they can't afford him.

or maybe they already have him in the bag and are therefore in a stronger position to negotiate.

Real have backed themselves into a corner, and it is almost a situation of 'sign Ronaldo or resign' for their chairman because of the way they've conducted themselves.

Now suddenly the idiot has realised that even if we theoretically sold him, we would want a high holy fortune for him and they would have to pay the sort of money they were flashing around in order to turn his head.

They're stuck between a rock and an Alex Ferguson, and I don't envy them.

But they've made their own bed, so they can die of autoerotic asphyxiation in it.

Also Ronaldo has a deal with Nike himself.

So wouldn't Nike not want him to go to Madsrid?

So we would take some piddling amount (presuming he wants to go and we're willing in principle to sell) just because someone with FOUR YEARS still on his contract wants a move?

No chance. They're backing down because they've not got 110m plus 300k a week to pay him without destroying their wage structure and going into serious hock.

And even if they paid the rediculous fee we would demand it wouldn't make them popular with the fans, polls suggest that they don't want to sign Ronaldo at the prices that have been quoted :nono:

Allegedly Nike has said they would kill the upcoming 'CR7' campaign and just market him like other players they have who play for Adidas clubs.

A good example of this is Anderson, who plays for a Nike club but has an adidas contract. Adidas have done feck all with him except shove him into one of their commercials for less than a second.

Of course there's a huge difference in marketability, but they're very reluctant to do anything with 'em.

Reebok with Ryan Giggs and (I think) Adidas with Beckham are notable exceptions, but they weren't Nike deals and Nike has bigger fish to fry internationally than a player who will now be selling tons of adidas product presuming he moves.

Do you think Nike could offer him an amazing deal provided he stays at United (a Nike club)

Proves its all coming from Real

I agree. Simply ask yourself what Ronaldo's weighing up. The areas where Madrid offer him something better than United are;
1) Make more money is salary. Clearly Madrid will offer more than United.
2) Make more money in endorsements. Frankly I think Ronaldo will make more endorsement money globally by playing in Europe than he currently does here.
3) Be closer to his homeland and family. Seems like a minor point but I'm sure it's part of his concerns.
4) Better weather. The lad's constantly at the beach on his day off...again, it just suits him better.
5) Bang more hot European women. Since being at United he hasn't been associated in the press with a single British woman (other than prostitutes). All the alleged girlfriends have been from elsewhere in Europe.
6) Fulfil a childhood dream. His stated as much since he got here.

So what can we do to keep him beyond appeal to his sense of loyalty? I'll be surprised if he stays. A player doesn't keep hushed about his plans while at a tournament if he has no desire to leave, he simply says he's staying and that's that. Contract or no contract if he wants to go United will grudgingly accept that and move on. Doesn't mean I like it but...you can't really make a strong enough case for him to stay that refutes all the strong reasons to go.

Granted he could get more money at Real. But that could cause its own problems as i could see players like Raul, Casillas and Guti being unimpressed and could cause problems with team spirit. I doubt he'd have the same cameraderie there (hes friends with Heinze but didn't get on with Ruud) as he has at United.

Madeira is still a long way from Madrid(probably as far from Madrid, as Madrid is from Manchester). If he wanted to be really near his family he could play for Maritimo.

The weather is better, but for much of the season, the weather wouldn't be that great in Madrid anyway. If he wants to play somewhere for the climate there are better places to go.

Hes been associated with Gemma Atkinson. There are plenty of fit British women he could bang. Keeley Hazell said he was the one footballer she found really good looking. Im sure fit women from anywhere would not mind living where he wanted to.

He said he supported Benfica. He never even watched Real when they were in the 98, 2000 and 2002 European Cup finals.

And what about the negatives. As mentioned earlier the team spirit is probably better at United (i think there'd be a lot of jealousy if he was being savage wages.) The lack of stability with managers. The fans are more impatient at Real(they might not have been willing to take into consideration the personal problems he had in 05/06). Also if something happened to Ronaldo like the World Cup 2 years ago, and he supposedly helped get someone like Ramos sent off in an international tournament (playing for Portugal against Spain) do you think he'd be treated as favourably by their club and fans?

thoward the love doctor!

surely that latest statement from Real amounts to encouraging a player to hand in a transfer request?

"We are waiting for Ronaldo to say something, and as soon as he says he wants to play for Real Madrid there will be conversations between the two clubs," Real's director general of the presidency Miguel Angel Arroyo was quoted as saying in sports daily Marca on Thursday.

"We would willingly reach an agreement with Manchester United if it is possible, that is to say, if they want to sell and if the price was affordable."
Wow.....just...wow.

That's stepping over the line. Surely FIFA can't ignore that. They aren't just praising a player anymore, they are publicly asking him to make a move happen, while admitting they haven't even talked to his club yet.

This whole tactic is 1) to make an unsellable player sellable and 2) to lower the price. They must think we're as dumb as they are. They talk about they have the finances but the reality is they cannot afford the transfer fee. quite funny that

I doubt FIFA will do anything though. Isn't the legislation about directly contacting players under contract?

Doesn't make going through the media correct but I expect that will be the FIFA position.

I wonder IF he does go if any evidence will come out then (if they have been speaking to him) and they'll get done retrospectively?

 Gotta laugh at Real Madrid. Mouthing off about money being no object when it comes to signing the world's greatest players and it turns out they could never afford Ronaldo.
Obviously their trying to get Ronaldo now for less of a fee even though United hold all the trump cards. Even if they were to persuade Ronaldo to hand in a transfer request they still wouldn't get him
Real Madrid totally lack class and now they look like a laughing stock!

You'd be surprised what FIFA can ignore. Trust me, nothing will ever come of how Madrid has gone about this.

At least it would most likely put an end to this thread. It's in United's and the fans' interest as much it is Real's for Ronnie to publicly say what he wants

No-one hates him. Well, at least I don't think they do.

It's just that we as fans feel incredibly disappointed and let down by him. Football is a emotive sport, and people have every right to feel angry, and lets be honest, he has come across as a bit of a twat in this whole saga. But, that doesn't mean people 'hate' him. As a footballer, I would say everyone loves him, I know I do, but as person, I don't really have much 'love', doesn't mean I hate him though, I think quite a lot of others probably feel the same.

Spot on Sam! My feelings exactly.

or maybe they already have him in the bag and are therefore in a stronger position to negotiate.

Look, how many more times does this need to be said? You can't have someone 'in the bag' who's contracted to his employers for four more years, and those emplyers have stated more than once that he's not for sale. He's in the bag alright - the one marked 'Property of MUFC'

could not have put it better....

 Fergie is still steel....even if he is a few years away from retiring...

my guess is he will persuade Ronaldo to stay at least until Fergie leaves....

but inspite of the positive things Fergie has said about the Glazzers...I still think they are the ones who are holding back on giving Ronaldo the improved contract...thus Fergie's threat to leave....

now if Germany win today...we shall all know what Ronaldo has to say...
