What is the limit on what you lot would be happy with the club offering him as goes a new contract? Assuming you feel he is deserving and that the right course to take.

Or do you not even have a limit where Ronaldo is concerned?

We should rename Old Trafford "Young Portu".

And that's just for starters...

This whole thing is a joke now.

Forget everyone, Ronaldo. Think for yourself. Where do you feel happy, comfortable and satisfied with the quality of your game? Manchester United. The fans love you, the players love you, you can be a true legend at this club. Manchester United is going places and if you leave the train then you will regret it.

RONALDO: 'I do not know what my future will be'

Monday June 9,2008

By Tony Banks in Zurich

CRISTIANO Ronaldo appeared to pull back from the brink last night and hinted that he could yet be persuaded to stay at Manchester United as he revealed that he has not made up his mind about his future.

Player of the season Ronaldo starred in Portugal’s 2-0 opening Euro 2008 win over Turkey in Geneva on Saturday and then said: “I do not know what my future will be.

“After the Euros we will deal with it. Does the speculation affect me? What do you think? No. I feel good. But I’m now in a mindset that I cannot allow myself to worry about these things and for that reason I am calm.”

Ronaldo’s United captain, Rio Ferdinand, said: “Only Cristiano can answer the question why he would want to leave Old Trafford.

“As a footballer with United, and as a fan, I would like to think that he will be staying at a great club.”

Doesn't sound like "I'll stay" but then......maybe he's been mis-quoted. Ah well, another opportunity missed to clear this up for us.

Rio on the Official website......

Rio Ferdinand fully believes Cristiano Ronaldo will be a Manchester United player come the start of next season.

Speculation has been rife over the winger's future with quotes attributed to him claiming he wants to join Real Madrid. Gary Neville said on Saturday evening that he sees no reason why Ronaldo would want to leave Old Trafford and Ferdinand is in full agreement.

"As a footballer of Manchester United and as a fan, I would like to think he will stay, and I am quite positive of him staying," the defender told Radio 5 Live's Sportsweek.

"I haven't spoken to him, but I just feel he will. He is at a great club, with great team-mates and great fans who adore him. Hopefully he makes the decision that we all want and he will stay.

"A lot of the players are signing up. In the last couple of months myself, Wes Brown and Michael Carrick have all signed up. I think Patrice Evra has agreed a new contract, Wayne Rooney is staying, Edwin van der Sar has extended his contract; everyone's singing from the same hymn book.

"It would be nice if we can keep this team together because there's a great chance to be really successful over the coming years."

After helping Portugal to a 2-0 victory over Turkey in their opening game at Euro 2008, Ronaldo again reiterated his desire not to discuss his future until after the tournament.

"I haven't decided yet about my future," he insisted. "I'll only do that after the European Championships are over."

Didn't Rio hear him say "I stay" ? Must be something in the moving rumours, or the food.

I think we can finally surmise that there is something going on. The "I stay" comment is no longer relevant. He has a decision to make. What that decision is is for us to determine. Is it to do a major deal with Real and leave United, or is it about more money at OT and he stays. Or is it about his mother, brother, godfather and goldfish. In which case he's probably going.
Either way, "I stay" obviously doesn't mean "I stay"

Ronaldo is the finest player I have seen play for Manchester United.
But for me Roy Keane will always epitomize what United will always be about....heart,character, courage....and just willing to do everything and anything for the cause....I have long ago accepted players like Keane or Scholes or Giggs will be few and far between in the modern era.....perhaps that is why my expectation of total loyalty....especially from a 'foreign' player is not too high....I think most here deep down would have accepted Ronaldo...perhaps even the likes of Nani and Anderson will finish their carriers elsewhere....
But I was a little surprised that 'reality' came knocking this early re: Ronaldo....

having thought about this and what has been said by the player and the club and his agent....I conclude that Ronaldo wants to stay as long as he gets a much improved contract....he has chosen to 'negotiate' it through his agent and using Real as the counterweight......that does leave a bad taste....but in the end if he had chosen the normal path of asking for a new contract the year after he had signed the last one...I think he must rightly have felt he had little chance....

I think even Ronaldo did not think he would do as well as he had this season...42 goals is phenomenal for a winger.....imo the club will give in or be prepared to break up the best side put together by SAF ever....perhaps even one of the best teams ever in world football....

still we are only buying time....I think Ronaldo will leave in about three or four years...and he will be at his peak....Real Madrid will get the best player in world football since probably Maradona himself.....

...and that hurts....but I am convinced he will never achieve the greatness he will achieve with Manchester United away from the club.....how could he?

until the day he takes off the sacred shirt I will burst my lungs supporting him.

Another variant of that after match interview - this time from:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2008/jun/09/euro2008.euro2008groupa

"The speculation doesn't affect me," he said. "I feel good, I feel calm and this is the most important thing. I'm in a mindset now where I cannot allow myself to worry about these things and for that reason, I am calm.

"If you feel good, you don't have a lot of pressure in your head and the football comes good. After the Euro, I will talk about my future. I don't know already what the future holds after the Euro."

Ronaldo said that he was in contact with his friends at United but was not talking to them or his Portugal colleagues about what promises to be the summer's major transfer saga. It is helping his country to their first major championship success that preoccupies him.

"I need to think about the Euro," he said. "I don't need to think 'What about my future?' I know my future is good. My focus is only to play good in the Euros."

Roanldo refuses to placate Man Utd as Real Madrid rumours continue.

Cristiano Ronaldo's Manchester United team-mates have begun the campaign to try to persuade him to stay at Old Trafford next season. However, the Portuguese winger was offering no hope to Rio Ferdinand or Gary Neville last night, when he said "my future is good", lending more weight to the growing belief that he will join Real Madrid this summer.

Ronaldo, 23, announced via a Madrid-based Brazilian journalist last week that he hoped the two clubs would agree a fee - thought to be about £78 million - thus ending his five-year stay at United. The man who Sir Alex Ferguson signed from Sporting Lisbon for £12.3 million in 2003 is reportedly also seeking £200,000 a week in wages from the Spanish champions.

However, after Portugal's 2-0 opening win over Turkey here, Ronaldo, who edged out Joao Moutinho and Pepe to be man of the match, ignored direct questions about any move to Spain. "I need to think about my future," he said. "I know my future is good. I feel good, I feel calm.

"If you don't ask a lot of questions in your head then the football will come good. That's what I try to do every time. My colleagues, my friends, my coaches help me all the time. And I feel very good, I feel on good form.

"The speculation about my future does not affect me. No, no. I feel well. But I'm now in a mindset that I cannot allow myself to worry about these things and for that reason I am calm. After the Euro I will talk about my future. After."

78m is a joke considering the commercial value, if United sell him they should retain his image/merchandising rights if possible, because I actually feel that is the only reason Real are after Ronaldo

Why can't we just match Real's wages and make him stay. We are more marketable than Real Madrid FFS

If they actually make a genuine offer of £78m, particularly if the Glazers are sounded out before hand, it's going to make for an interesting situation i feel.

78m and a few players, but not only 78m, I don't see United selling him for less than a 100m

You realise Keane wasn't exactly overly-loyal? He was quite willing to leave the club when he felt that we weren't being *generous* enough with his wages. Every single fan ended up paying more money for their season tickets because of the huge rise in the wage bill thanks to his new contract.

Why can't we just match Real's wages

Because we have to live with the consequences after he has left, that could be conceivably be at the end of the next season [that is if he chooses to stay of course].

We must stick to our own wage structure.

Wasn't someone at Real quoted yesterday as saying the most expensive players are the cheapest

I think it was an old quote but still true

.

But if a certain player's marketability is exceptional, surely we need to offer him more to keep him here, its basic supply and demand.

imo the club was being very unfair to a player who was at the heart of that team...he could have got a hell of a lot more by going to Juventus....if I remember the club that was interested in him at the time. there are many reasons for season ticket prices going up....and players wages are one of them...that I am afraid is reality of the modern game....

So you'd pay him anything then? A nice big fat bribe eh?

Do you suppose that when Rooney turns up at his next contract talks, his agent will open negotations at a reasonable level orr now that we have opened the door, he won't just stroll straight on through?

Stability is also important, today, and when Ronaldo is but a memroy to us.

in the end it IS supply and demand.....of course both the club and player weigh in other factors....but if a deal cannot be struck it will be because Ronaldo has made up his mind he does not want to play for Manchester United again for reasons other than money....and that I believe is not the case.

I expect that's what's going on behind the scenes as we speak. I'd like to hear more on the Nike deal....could be the tie-breaker.

That's almost definitely what is going on behind the scenes. I seriously doubt there was ever a "tie breaker" to be had especially after signing a five year deal 16 months ago.

He's angling for something from us or he simply would have said "I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here!" before the Euros in order to put more pressure on United for a longer period of time.

"I stay"s mixed in with "I do not know what the future holds" without any commitment or declaration he specifically wants to play for Real next year.

Those image rights are worth a high holy fortune, especially if he gets this Nike deal through. That will likely be dependent partly on him being at a Nike club (Real are adidas, Barcelona are the most prominent Spanish Nike club), and I'm sure is planned to be tied into United product lines.

Making that sort of a deal wouldn't break our wage structure but would make his wallet happy. We could always offer Mikel Silvestre the same deal to keep him - 15% of all the profits of Mikel27 branded Martian-headed spacesuits.

Ronaldo is the best player in the world. He's worth quite a lot of money and he only will be for a certain number of years. Look at Maradona or Gazza - nothing lasts forever - get it while it is there financially.

He's of course going to be flattered by Real's interest, as he said the other day "when I was a boy I dream of playing for Real Madrid, but dreams don't always come true" then "I am happy here".

That announcement was, imho, going to be that the image rights CR7 deal was completed. He's playing a little bit of a game and letting Real run riot in order to keep pressure on, although I think he miscalculated at how irritated we'd be by it all.

I'm sure there is a method to his seeming madness that we're not aware of, and I'm sure that this will be yet another false alarm in our yearly "Ronaldo To Madrid (cnut!!!!!!!!!111!!!!!!!)" a-thon.

Wages are a bribe now?

You've gone so far off the deep end you've attained orbital status.

We must stick to our own wage structure.

I don't remember huge outrage when Keane broke the wage structure, then (iirc) van Nistelrooy, then Giggs with his multi-year deal.

Funny that.
