Castrol EDGE Performance of the Month
ALEXIS SANCHEZ
Palermo v UDINESE

Bagging a four-goal haul for Udinese against Palermo has earned Sanchez the accolade for this month. He became only the fourth player to score four or more goals in a game in the top five European leagues this season; he joins Manchester United’s Dimitar Berbatov, Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo and Everton’s Louis Saha in doing so.

Despite playing only 53 minutes, the 'Nino Maravilla' scored with four of his eight attempts, taking his goalscoring tally for this season to 11 goals in 24 league appearances.

Sanchez made 36 touches, completed 15 of his 19 passes and showed his phenomenal skills on the ball when he made a double stepover and dribbled past Palermo keeper Salvatore Sirigu before netting his second goal. The Chilean has completed 66 out of 117 dribbles in this Serie A campaign, the highest ratio amongst players who have attempted more than 100 so far (56%).

feck it, I'm gonna release my inner muppet.

Based on what I saw in the World Cup, this kid is the real deal. I'd rate him ahead of all the other flavour of the month youngsters being discussed in other threads.

If we sign anyone this summer I hope we sign him. Not sure where he'd fit in exactly but he's good enough for us to sign him first and worry about that later. We'll regret it if he ends up anywhere else.

You don't think it would be a better idea to address the most pressing problems in our squad (GK and CM)? I agree he looks a terrific prospect but we have good wingers and strikers already.

We need a central midfielder too. That goes without saying.

I should have worded that better. He's the only player I've heard us linked with that I think is a guaranteed future star. I trust Fergie to get in the CM we need but I haven't a clue who that would be.

I think he would be a fantastic addition. He is so much flexible in where he can play than say Park or Valencia.

We have nowhere near the strength in depth people think.

It's Pastore. More than likely though it will be some unknown.

Gambit if we don't sign Sanchez and Pastore I'm holding you personally responsible as Head Muppet.

I notice a trend here...

He's coming

I've said many a time we won't sign them but I will take the responsibility.

Young or Rodwell surely.

Both could be picked up fairly cheaply now I think, Youngs contract and Evertons well documented financial problems.

Although i would love to see Sanchez at OT.I'd think Young would be the most likely.

Signing Sanchez would secure our support in the country of Chile, could be a very shrewd business move.

Spot on. He's definitely the next big thing. I'd take him over Pastore any day (though ideally, both would be good), he's already class and the potential to be one of the worlds best is clearly there.

I think we'll sign Young though, given the recent trend of "we need a player right let, let's go Premiership proven, and preferably English too."

Please not Young :(

I wont be surprised if we end up getting no one in midfield

Exctly, people here get way too caught up in formations and positions, with a player as talented as Sanchez you find a way for him to fit in.

There are several players as talented, we arent going to sign them all without a plan. Thats for Real Madrid

Several that are performing in a big league that are actually attainable? The point I was making wasn't to sign lots of players with no plan, but that when there is one as gifted and available as Sanchez who can play right across the front line, you don't worry about what rigid system you use to put him in.

How do we know he's more attainable than others? City are rumoured to be bidding for him like pretty much all the rest

If we sign him, great. Same with Pastore and the rest. But we do need an idea of where he's going to fit in the same as with the rest of them.

If for example, Sir Alex is dead set on Valencia and Nani on the wings, then signing Sanchez to play up front could mean Hernandez doesnt get his chances anymore. Or Berbatov on the bench fulltime. And so on.

No, we arent going to sign players that will cost so much without a plan for them to improve the first team. And make sensible use of what we already have in the squad.

Like this past summer?

I didn't expect to sign a midfield player last Summer. I felt Fergie wanted to give Anderson and Gibson the opportunity to push on.

However, after the utter failure of our midfield this season I fully expect a new signing that will be bought to come straight into the first team.
