When defending, he did average at best. Coleman made mince-meat out of him a couple of times, and he had positioning lapses a few times but luckily nothing came from it.

He wasn't fantastic by any stretch when we had the ball either, which should be his strongest point. His passing was slack, and he kept running into players.

As I said, he's had much worst performances - but I just hope Fergie will drop him a few times this season if he's below par. We couldn't do that in past seasons, but now we have a rather enthusiastic cover for him, we should use him.

I can't say I agree with you, and I feel that's very harsh on Evra after yesterdays performance. Coleman came on when the entire team was pushing forward trying to get an equaliser, and you could tell that a fresh Coleman was a problem for a tiring United-team overall.

I agree with you that Evra should be dropped when playing poorly, but I refuse to agree with you that yesterday was one of those performances that leads to Evra being dropped.

But this thread is about Büttner, so lets just leave it with me hoping that our new left back is able to give Evra some much needed rest in games we've more or less won, or in games we can afford to rest Pat.

Evra was decent defensively. He's never had a particularly good final ball on him, though, so to start criticising him for that now seems odd.

Am I the only one who genuinely belive that this kid is a fraud, who's just had a go at the museum tour at OT, and who's given lots of fake interviews to dutch papers about being signed by United?

I mean, there's been nothing official yet of this signing. And look at the picture with the kit. He's clearly just bought a kit at the Megastore and taken the guided tour through OT. It's blatant.

Was thinking the same. No offical picture at all. Just him holding the shirt in the museum. I could have got a mate to take a picture of myself walking towards Bridgewater and took a picture of myself in a training shirt.

now c'mon :lol::lol::lol:

I know people have complained about Fergie and Gill's swiftness and urgency in the market - but are we sure allowing shit left backs/thugs to sign themselves for the club is the way going forward?

If we've really signed Buttner, I suspect Ferguson will paint his arms orange. He'll never get away with those godawful tattoos.

Haha. Good imagination.

I dont think he can have an 'official' photo with the kit until everything is done on the transfer. That one was probably on request of an overeager journalist or person, or even himself.

Could you amagine if fergie / gill turn round and deny any relation with this guy, and that it is all really a fake  that would be to funny.

We really do lack that pantomine villain since Neville retired. Evra has a go but just doesnt look hateful enough.

Sir Alex Ferguson said: "Alexander is one of the best young left backs in Europe and we're delighted to sign him. He's someone we've been watching for a while now. He gives us some really exciting options in that position."

Alexander Büttner said: "Joining Manchester United is one of the best days of my life. It's a team I have admired for many years now and I can't wait to join my teammates and play my part in helping the club be successful."

High praise indeed. Hope he gets a lot of games.

Hopefully he'll turn out to be good, Evra needs competition and opportunities to rest.

Obviously our scouts seem to think highly of him, no matter what Vitesse or Ajax fans have been saying on the forums. I'm hoping he'll be a pleasant surprise and do well to backup Evra when required.

If he is one of the best full backs in europe, then lets hope he actually gets a game then when Evra's needing a break.

Can't be any worse than Evra has been in the last couple of years. He'll probably only be a bit part player this season though.

he's a united player now officialy :)

Glad Fergie's spoken about him. Seems he's rating him highly. Although, I guess he wasn't going to come out and say "He's alright. It's just nice to have some decent cover for Evra now."

I honestly do hope we give this lad a chance. Every Dutchman (?) I've spoken to, bar one, seems to rate him highly. They say he's a good defender, and not just good at attacking.

Would be nice to see him on the bench this weekend.

Yes, because Evra has been the worst full back in the world these past couple of years.

Keeps letting us down when it really matters. About time to see if someone else can handle those situations better.

That was my initial response too, but seriously, who are the good young left backs? Who are even the good left backs full stop? The entire position seems to have turned to shit.

If we sign Mouthner and Handner I'll know Fergie is just wumming us.

Evra's not thoroughly shit but the thing is he looks as if he was the only left-back United would ever dare to field. That's worrying when you compare his performances from 06-09.

I've always defended him but he needs one big rocket up his arse. Or at least to feel it's coming when he's not performing.

A few more players who like they could kill you would do no harm.

United's dutch scout, Ed van Stijn said this to a dutch newspaper:

"Every season the club ask its european scouts to compile a list of the five best players in every position. At the end of last season, I had Büttner as number three or four behind players like Jetro Willems of PSV."

I can only think of Lahm, Ashley, Evra, and Coentrao as good left backs right now.

If Willems is better than Büttner then we are fecked. :(

It's crazy how under-rated Evra is, isn't it?

Well, I'd say criticising performances by a player who, according to some, has been coming back to his old-self is more of acknowledging his real, since some time hidden class.

Being happy with him performing like he's now is more of under-rating him if anything.
