Aleksandar Dragović - defender - possible target?

Read on Tumblr (can't find the post again and no real worthy source either) that one of his teammates left a comment on Instagram that he wishes him good luck with his transfer and that he hopes it will be fixed too. Is this the first time a transfer has been given away by Instagram activity?

 that's either exceptionally dry sarcasm or you were not here this summer :D

Same thing happened with Di Maria and Rojo if I'm not mistaken. :)

@Revan

All fair points, but there is an underlying theme with those type of players :

Hummels - Will Dortmund let him go now instead of trying to salvage their season ? Might be a little unrealistic but it's only halfway through the Bundesliga season and they're just 12 points behind CL position despite being in the relegation zone.

Godin - He's the lynch-pin for an Atletico team alternating between Miranda/ Gimenez at RCB. Is performing well in both La Liga and in Europe with a real chance to come close to or even repeat last season's travails. Will they sell him now ? How can we incentive any such move ?

I think the best time to pursue that caliber of established, undoubtedly world class player is in the summer. And since we aren't privy to the scouting/ recruiting/ negotiation process, who knows maybe Dragovic is a stop gap or a depth addition in the long term with substantial turnover and reinforcement of adequate quality in the summer. :)
Well, I was hoping for two top quality signings in that department. One proven (Hummels or Godin) and an another one with very high potential (Laporte or Marquinhos). Hopefully Dragovic will be good enough but there is a reason why nodoby has ever heard about him until a week ago. Obviously this doesn't mean that he won't be a top player (same could have been said for Vidic or Evra back then) but it isn't near as a guaranteed success as Laporte for example. Remember, for every Hernadez and Solskjaer we have a few Bellions, Manuchos or Dongs. Just that on the past, those experiments made sense cause we were already very powerful, while now we aren't. So, I think that at-least for now we should make as risk-free signings as possible.

Obviously the summer is better for signings, but if we sign Dragovic (and considering that we signed Rojo only a few months back) there isn't much room for new signings there. One, at best. Which may not be near enough if Dragovic doesn't set the world on fire.

Edit: Laporte has a release clause so it can be triggered any moment. With Van Gaal's obsession for left footers it is very weird why we aren't interested on him. He's expensive but he's probably the best of his generation (or at-worst third best after Varane and Marquinhos).

It was Ruben Okotie, the best forward in the 2. Bundesliga this season, also from Austria and also a former "Austria Wien" player.

Not exactly his current teammate but an ex-teammate back from Austria Wien and Austrian NT. Dinamo played TSV 1860 München today or yesterday it was and those two met, after that his mate posted a photo of them both on instagram wishing him a quick transfer, etc.

I was not here in the summer no, so unintentional sarcasm?
Haha okay, well if I remember correctly, at least the Rojo and Di María transfers were spoilered on Instagram, and possibly Herrera too :)

Edit: Yep, Rojo and Di María at least a day or two before it was officially announced.

It definitely looks like there's something happening. He's been getting great reviews from what I've seen and having a highly rated defender instead of our current bunch can never be bad. I have a good feeling about this transfer and the last time I had this feeling we got Blind who's excellent.

To be honest, I don't disagree with that reasoning at all mate. I too was hoping (and surely all United fans have a similar view) for a top echelon starter (ideally Hummels or Godin or someone of that ilk like you suggested) supplemented by a younger talent who could grow into prominence (again Laporte who could contend with Rojo or Sule or Gimenez who is IMO an even better potential than Aymeric). But all things considered, it looks unlikely right now because the sellers don't have enough incentive to let go (eg. Athletic Club can be very stubborn and tangle the club in legal hassles even if we pay the clause IIRC). So might as well take one of the better ones available and hope for the best, maybe he's Vida Revisisted, one never knows. That said, I do firmly believe we'll prioritize the signing of a top class center half in the summer to alleviate some of the concerns.

I love this guy's name, he sounds like a beast of a defender. Never seen him play but I am 100% sure he is incredible

Yep. Like you, hopeing for the best now. He should be an improvement on what we have (which isn't that difficult) and if he'll help us to get back in top 4, then it will be a decent signing.

I'd rather wait until the summer and sign Laporte instead.
We will sign a world class defender on summer so it won't do any harm if we take a punt on a player like Dragovic now. At worst we get a Vidic out of nowhere:)

How good has Laporte actually been this season? Bilbao are 13th this season and the whole squad has been pretty poor, no? I appreciate he has ridiculous potential on FM and FIFA but I do feel like he's a name just chucked about a lot.

Edit: just realized basically this was posted on the last page. Oh well.

He's more very good potential and a good player in a structured system right now than a ready to slot in any system anywhere sort of player as well. Plus not exactly a aerially commanding leader we need as far as i am concerned.

I'd rather we signed him now, and then went after Laporte or Varane in the summer.
I'd rather sign Laporte now and then on the summer one of Hummels or Godin. Or Laporte and one of Hummels/Godin on the summer. Or both Hummels and Godin in the summer.

Haven't played FM since 2012 or so and can't remember the last time I played FIFA/PES. Have also to say that Laporte had looked class every time I have seen him (which being completely fair, isn't that many).

Haven't seen him more than 3 times or so this season, so I don't know exactly how he is doing. If he's rated from everyone though, there might be a reason for it.

Isn't Laporte left-footed? We don't another leftie.

So we getting this lad soon it seems ? Happy if it goes through. As most have said, he could end up being a vidic like signing.

Nah, he isn't. Varane, Laporte and Gimenez might be the most talented centre-halves out there. As you say the whole team has struggled and so has he. He definitely was better last season, but I think it's understandable given the form Athelic are going through. He's still been one of their better players, although not as consistent as last season.

Isn't Laporte left-footed? We don't another leftie.

Because?

Just reading up on him now...

His idol is Vidic, and it's his dream to play in England.

Also, he once slapped the bald head of a Swiss politician.

I love him already. Pair him with Rojo.

I actually think that it's the best time to look around. Most of CB's today are overrated (at least the ones you can get and I mean the ones who should make instant impact with their ability and command), so I think it's a good idea to look a bit around (look how Southampton got Alderweireld on the cheap).

Godin doesn't want to come now and why should he? Hummels? Everybody who follows him knows that he is out of form this season (some good games, some bad, but nothing special) and he didn't really improve in the last 2 years (great WC, but before and after not the same player). I know he had injuries and that's OK, I know he is talented, but it doesn't change the fact that he is out of form. Why spend 30mil and then first trying to get him match fit, then see if he will quickly adapt to the league and on top of the hope that he will improve a lot and very quickly? It's to big of a risk and it's better to wait till summer and then decide what to do.

With Laporte I am 50/50, the price will remain the same, so if he is not in a form, maybe it's better to wait till the and of the season, but if he is doing OK (without mistakes, which is my problem with Hummels right now) then I wouldn't mind spending the money on him (but just him) and then see how him and Smalling would do, as I really think that Smalling should get the chance as he is doing quite a good job this season and is talented, while also Jones is getting better (defensively) and is very young, plus there is Rojo, for whom people who followed Sporting say that he is actually good, just needs time.

So again, I really think that we should look around a bit to find a good CB and maybe Dragović is one, can't tell, but seems highly rated.

It doesn't matter if they are world class or not, we just need players that can fit into the team. Look, we signed Di Maria and Falcao last window and they are underwhelming at most.

Would love it if this transfer goes through. For some reason I am really pleased by the prospect of us signing him.

Dragovic vs Arsenal's Paulista. Who'll be the better signing? Bring it on!
