Alas poor Carrick...WTF has happened?

Telegraph reckon he only wanted to retire from
Capello's England unless there was an emergency, they said he's happy to be considered again by Woy.

Gets funnier/more stupid by the day

Roy is the countries biggest troll. It's a big presentation for the Liverpool fans to show them how shit their players are.

So what are the odds on England going out in the group stage having failed to score a single goal? It ought to be odds on. This isn't going to be nice..

Woy was on SSN there. Says he hasn't spoke to him since he took over but hasn't ruled out asking him in the future to play for England. The fecks the point in that when England are in desperate need for him now!

Complete cock.

I think Woy realizes he's fecked up but he's too late now.

He said he was made aware of Carricks stance when he took over, but surely any new manager that comes in, the first thing they do is contact the player to clarify the situation, incase it had been an issue just with a previous manager. He surely knows now he's made a monumental feck up, he has to now that he's to look at Jordan Henderson every day in training.

The part in bold is bang on and shows how fecking useless Woy is.

He took over with plans to use Gerrard, Lampard, Barry and Parker. In his eyes, what would be the point in getting in touch with Carrick and saying "just so you know, I'm still planning on using you as a 5th choice but I wondered if your position had changed at all?".

He fecked up because anyone with half a brain should be using him as first choice and trying to find out if Gerrard or Lampard work well with him.

If I was manager, I'd have been firstly trying to get Scholes to play in the first and last games of the group and then with a game a week he'd be fine after that, if he refused I'd use Carrick with Lampard.

He made Super Steven starfish uber human does it on his own because he's roy of the fecking rovers Gerrard his fecking Captain though. First mistake.

To confirm what exactly the situation is. Others are reporting that Carricks issue is down to a niggling injury he had, and that it wouldn't be worthwhile to go to a tournament over the summer if he wasn't first choice. Hodgson should have checked that this was the case initially, and failing that contacted him as soon as Barry and Lampard got injured to let him know the situation had changed.

Carrick is going through an Achilles surgery now, perhaps he thought that if he couldn't get any assurances over a starting place in Euros, then it's better to get cured of that injury and instead concentrate on the club. Makes sense IMO,it'd be an absoluely horrific scenario if he would have been sitting at the bench the whole time and due to his injury would've missed of our season.

Is he really having surgery?

Well, there's not much to really add which hasn't been said about Carrick's exclusion, even before the Barry injury.

If it wasn't so hilariously patheticly incompetent of EACH of the past 4-5 England managers over looking Carrick in favour of failed combinations etc, it might have actually been sad.

I was always of the brigade that "well what do I know" that these managers don't? So surely Carrick's exclusion is justified and MOST United fans I know must be biased and blinkered!

Then I watch Carrick play, season in, season out. (except for a 18 month stint where he was a bit...off color) producing the goods for a title winning club. Then you hear interviews with players like Scholes (treated almost the exact same way by his country), Xabi Alonso etc, all rating Carrick - not to mention SAF's trust in him...I mean, come one - surely BY NOW, the year 2012, someone in the FA or the NT manager would have and should have figured out what the problem's been with the English NT?

Noooo, every year, the same shit on a stick. Terry/Gerrard/Lampard...and now the new "generation" of Henderson/Carroll/Downing...

I'm not even English, so I can only imagine how infuriating and frustrating it must be for your actual supporters.

Let's just hope they don't end up treating players like Wilshere/Cleverley in the same way

Yesterday I saw a replay of our away game against City. Carrick was by far our best player in that game, probably only overshadowed by Kompany and Zabaleta. His movement without the ball was great and he was the only midfielder with legs quick enough to match Touré. Frankly it's a shame he's not in the England squad, by far Englands best defensive mf.

On a side note the same goes for Ferdinand. Maybe he's not as quick as in his hey days but damn that man can read the game better then the most of us.

My final note will be regarding our squad compared to City's. We where more or less level with City's best eleven in that game. A game we played without Vidic, our best defender. Giggs and Scholes was underperforming, one didn¨t have the pace and the other had a day off at the office. Park was playing without match fitness and looked totally lost, he was running like a headless chicken for 59 min contributing absolutely nothing. I'm looking forward to next season. If our younger players will continue to develop (and be fit) and with addition of a few quality players like Kagawa we will be up there with City and Chelsea.

My god man, why would you do such a thing to yourself ?

I would say more akin to a collie dog chasing an empty crisp packet around a windy field.

Stupid is, stupid does ;-) I was waiting to see game 4 in the Stanley Cup between LA Kings and NJ Devils (1-3). It started two a clock in the night my time.

Came across this brilliant article on Carrick:

What an underrated football player.

You're right that blog post is better than most.

He's come a long way from his days with Joe Cole in the '99 FA Youth Cup side at West Ham.

I actually remember a lot of brilliant long balls and thru passes to the forwards in Carrick's Tottenham days and in the beginning with us. If anything he has grown more careful with experience.

I'm just glad he recovered from that injury thing because a year ago I thought Carrick was on his way out of the club. It may have been a confidence thing too after that Barcelona final, but I blame Fergie not Carrick for that failure. Rooney was placed on the left wing and told to attack the old and slow Carlos Puyol. Carrick launched long ball after long ball in the space behind Puyol for Rooney to attack, but it never came off. Fergie kept screaming at Rooney and Carrick from the sidelines to make the tactics work, but in the end it was an abject performance from United. Fergie made the tactical decision, and Carrick got the blame that day.

That's my recollection anyway.

England would have got much further in every competition to date had they simply played a more European game and had Carrick infront of the defense. Its one of lifes mysteries why he continually gets ignored by England managers.

The Italians rave about him and rightfully so, 1st name on the teamsheet last year from October onwards for me. Very impressive form throughout, my United player of the season.

Probably good for Carrick in the end that he wasn't in the England side.

Would had run the Italy team to the ground today.. Absolute disgrace not to include him but as United fan theres better days ahead with fresh Micheal Carrick when the season starts..

woy woudnt know how to use him. i hope that Pirlo show tonight will teach some people the value of deep sitting play maker.

Sentiment is great but they are different players imo. Carrick is far worse under pressure and doesn't translate that lack of calmness to ability on the ball.

Both great midifelders though. I've always loved Pirlo's style.

Was quite funny at the end with the pundits wondering where an English player of Pirlo's type will ever come from...

England midfielder get's the ball, shits himself, tries to blindly dribble through 2 players or hoofs the ball up to the forwards.

Carrick receives the ball and calmly plays it to an open midfielder or winger. BANG. Possession kept, relieving pressure, calming things, players will have more stamina, players can control the flow of the game.

People slate Carrick for passing back or sideways. Well sometimes you need that. See Xavi. That's all he feckin does.

Agreed. Think about how many times Carrick has pissed all over Italian opposition. I even remember the Italian press creaming themselves over Carrick after we kicked the shit out of AC Milan or Roma. Can't really remember.

Carrick receives the ball

Does not compute. Carrick hoofing the ball up to himself?..

You also need a player in midfield to be able to keep the ball under pressure and that isn't Michael Carrick as much as I love him.

I think he was comparing the two circumstances, like a) England midfielder hoofs it forward or b), carrick passes to the winger calmly.
He's not rated highly here because he doesn't take many risks with the ball, plays it simple. Had he been Spanish he'd be rated so much higher by them, because if you really watch them, how often do they take risks? The only risk taker in their team is iniesta. Xavi always plays the safe pass to keep possession. Compare that to Gerrard who goes for a splitting through ball every time he gets it, or Parker who falls over every time he touches the ball, and it's no wonder why England get no possession. The media bang on about how England is lacking such players, yet they refuse to look at carrick or scholes when they are exactly that.

Xavi does not just pass the ball sideways or backwards.

True, but he doesn't take any risks wih the ball, and is incredibly patient. He is willing to do over 50 passes between the midfielders before making a penetrating pass if it means keeping possession and waiting for the perfect opportunity. If there was an English player who did that everyone would get pissed off with him and tell him to hoof it up.

But of course mate! Im just saying that both are similar. Some English journos are crying for English Pirlo but they fail to notice that they have one-ish ready to play even today.

Martin Samuel says that unless England can unearth someone as good as Italy's Andrea Pirlo, they must prepare for more disappointment in the future.

Not sure I agree on that. I'm pretty sure he was the Cafs Player of the Season.

One or two here are clearly overestimating the impact he would've had with England. He should have gone and he no doubt would have improved their midfield, but he wouldn't have ran the Italians into the ground. Pirlo would've still bossed the game in midfield and controlled it.

At worst it would have allowed us to rest Parker and/or Gerrard at some point without having to play Henderson.

Actually, I'd have played Carrick and Parker holding with Gerrard advanced, and as the 2005 CL showed us, Gerrard can get the better of Pirlo in that position.

I personally think Carrick would've given England much better options.
