Alas poor Carrick...WTF has happened?

He was dog shit for a lot of 2009/10, Ferguson was dropping him for big games by the end of that season for pretty much the only time of his career. A couple of months after the World Cup he made out that he was injured to avoid a call up for an international friendly match, only to play 2 days later in the Community Shield in front of Capello. It's no surprise he was out of favour, Capello probably felt like Carrick was taking the piss out of him.

For this tournament, I think Carrick deserves a starting role, he's the best English player available, but it's pretty unreasonable of him to say he's not interested if he isn't guaranteed a starting spot. He'll have less of an England career than his talent merits, but a lot of that he brings on himself with his attitude.

He was inconsistent throughout the 2010-2011 season, read through this thread. He turned it on near the end, and even still, people had doubts about his ability to keep the performances steady for an entire season.

Yeah, he was disappointing, but it's worth considering that he basically had to play midfield on his own for most of the season. Fletcher was either woefully out of form or seriously ill at the time but he kept getting picked. Once Fletcher finally succumbed to his illness and stopped playing to recover and Carrick was played alongside Giggs he looked an awful lot better. It might just have been a coincidence, but there seemed to be a pretty sharp upturn in his performances around March, and he hasn't looked back since.

Lampard is OUT, official.

Henderson  is in. I have to laugh, otherwise I'd fecking cry.

Gonna put a quick bet on England to get knocked out in groups.

I like this....

If Henderson, 21, is allowed to replace Lampard then Liverpool will be the most represented club in Hodgson's squad, with five, despite a disappointing season which saw them 8th in the Premier League.

Is there a cry icon?

I'm distraught honestly. This squad selection has made me realize just how far England are trapped in the dark ages. Andy Carroll No. 9, Henderson, Milner, Downing, no Rio, no Carrick, flair like Johnson or Sturridge?.. hell no, we don't want any of that.

England have a pretty easy group.. They should still get 2 wins.
Knockout rounds will be a different matter.

I'm not even interested in watching England in the Euros anymore. I can't imagine them playing any decent football at all. Welbeck is officially the only reason I even am remotely interested and I wouldn't be surprised if Carroll starts over him anyway.

They play France, the stronger one of the host nations and Sweden whom they have only beaten once since 1968... how is that an easy group?

More importantly, how will they get those two wins with Gerrard, Parker and Henderson being the CM options? The likely England team of the first two games would finish in the lower half of the PL table.

I remember when Hodgson was a manager for Halmstad. Young and ambitious with modern idea's. 30+ years later and it seems like modern and ambitious is not the right words to describe him.

Good old England. I don't know what's worse. Downing or Henderson? One produced zero goals and zero assist the other one scored two goals in the FA cup, zero in the league.

Stewart Downing - a poor mans Sebastian Larsson

2 wins? I'll be surprised, Sweden will beat us or get a draw. When did we last beat Sweden?

And how did we last do against Ukraine in a competitive match?

I think I'm right in saying we beat them last time we played them, but before that it was about 40 years. I said England would get knocked out by Spain, now I'm not so sure. When doing the predictor, I found that we'd have to play the host nation and win just to come second.

England very well could go out at the group stage, and going through with four points is another real possibility.

The lack of a United presence in England teams has always been strange to me. Scholes being the obvious one who was underused and underrated by the national setup, Cole probably being another, and now Carrick being another. Odd considering if you lined up every club side in England, United probably would make the best England team. But why be logical when it comes to England?

Agreed.
I know it's hypothetical, but the following team would IMO be better than anything Hodgson may field at the EURO:

Amos
Jones - Smalling - Ferdinand - Fryers
Carrick - Scholes
Cleverley
Young - Rooney - Welbeck

England are the Liverpool of international football, really. Delusions of grandeur, pre-historic football, overrated players. Also, Andy Carroll.

Dear God, Andy Carroll at the European Championships.

That team is infinitely better than what we'll see at the Euros, the only two weaknesses are left back and keeper.

England will need to play really well to get out of the group stages specially considering Rooney wont be playing the first 2 games. With the team as it is, its very likely they'l be knocked out. Pity really, the team could have been better.

I was actually quite excited when Capello left. Now I'd beg him to come.

This is the worst England squad that I have ever seen selected for a major tournament.

I just can't understand why players like Carrick, rio and Sturridge have been left at home.

If, as expected, we crash and burn, Roy is going to get fecking slaughtered by the British press and most likely end up unemployed.

Yeah this statement sums up my feeling on the squad. It really is a throwback to the dark ages.

I will obviously be tub thumping my chest like a neanderthal for the duration of our stay in the competition but at least it won't look out of place with our probable line up.

The worst thing is he probably won't. People will look at no Barry, lamps and no Rooney for the first 2 games. I haven seen many people lamenting about the non selection of carrick or going for gerrard in centre mid with Parker etc.

Absolutely hilarious. I'd hate to be an England fan. Your best midfielder is sitting at home while a hair-gelled little twat who couldn't pass the ball through an open barn door from 20 yards is going to more than likely see decent time on the pitch.

You're probably right there mate.

I never thought I'd here myself say this but I wish it was pearce in charge for the euros, hell he couldn't have picked a worst squad could be?

Well Pearce could have picked carrick but didn't, opting to try jones there. They're all rubbish. Genuinely so annoyed. This is like one of the first tournaments I can remember where I haven't had exams or anything and we're gonna get destroyed.

5 players from a club that ranks 8th in the league. Nice one Hodgson. France are clear favorites now that Blanc has formed a united team. Sweden are worse than two years ago but I can see them get at least a point from England.

And Ukraine, they are a bit weak but u never know with the hosts.

Funny thing about Carrick is that he has asked the FA not to consider him for the english team. One can see why he has done that. Since Scholes comeback, people have been talking about how Hodgson might approach him to come out of international retirement. Why can't anyone talk to Carrick and ask him about playing for his country rather than just repeating the official statement that he be not considered. Not to take anything away from him, Henderson!

You can't make it up -

Carrol - disastrous season with L/pool scored 6 goals from 42 games - In the squad
Downing - zero goals and zero assists from 36 games - In the squad
Henderson - A couple of goals from 37 games, but widely considered a terrible season, lucky to get in the L/pool 1st team - In the squad.
Johnson & Gerrard - very average season in a 8th placed team.

5 players from a mid table prem league side picked by their ex manager.

... Is there any possible way we can get this blooke to the Euro's?! I would consider bribary a viable option.

I really feel I could do a better job at this than the past few managers. It doesn't really sound too hard. I have no idea why none of them rated Carrick as a first teamer.

I heard something on the radio, yesterday I think, (I'll have to stop listening to the radio) that Carrick was carrying a niggling injury & wanted to rest up over the summer, but if they really needed him he would be available.

We really need you Michael...
